I had a conversation with the UPS man today about 9/11. I mentioned that it seemed like more that 7 years to me. He said that it seemed like much less to him. It's interesting to me, the difference in perceptions. When 9/11 happened, I had just graduated college the previous year and was trying to figure out what to do with my life.
While I have a feeling that the figuring out what to do part might be a continual quest, certain pieces of the puzzle have fallen into place. Since that time seven years ago, I've became the manager of a small and successful business, married the most beautiful women in the world, joined a wonderful church, made new friends and lost some old ones, and maybe have gotten a few other things figured out along the way. The point that I made to the driver is that, with 7 years constituting just over 23% of my life, there has been a lot of change that makes that time seem like a great distance.
His counter was that, being older, it seemed like much less of a time period between the tragedy and today. Either way you look at the time issue, the fact will remain that the day will always be one of those that you have a crystal clear memory of if you were old enough to remember it in the first place. It is one of those pivotal moments in our nation's history and has shaped our nation and each of us as individuals in one way or another.
