The Olympic Torch arrived in Hong Kong today. The protests that have followed its journey around the globe were absent in the journey through Hong Kong. 3,000 troops and a few deportations can always help to ensure a smooth relay. Nevertheless, even with the tightest controls there can be something that slips through the cracks.

I do enjoy the irony of that capitalism in a communist society can provide. This story gave me a really good chuckle when I read it the other day.

The San Francisco Giants sent Barry Zito down to the bullpen today. If you don't follow baseball this name might not be familiar. If you do follow baseball, then you know that this is the same Barry Zito that the Giants paid 126 million dollars for back in the 2007 season. Baseball fans also know that this is guaranteed money. Up until a few hours ago, Mr. Zito was the highest paid starting pitcher in the majors. Now, he is the highest paid reliever.

I don't really like the Giants, so this doesn't do anything for me except make me laugh. The amazing part is that this isn't a deal that involved the Rangers. Not that the Rangers don't have a whole set of their own problems. This is a list that includes sharing the worst record in baseball with the Washington Nationals. Way to go Rangers! At least we have the Mavericks...oh, wait...never mind.

This peanut butter is 1/4 the calories of a regular peanut butter, yet it is still taste like peanut butter because it is made from peanuts. The secret is that most of the oil has been pressed out. The remaining powder can be reconstituted by mixing the powder 2 to 1 with water. It is also great for cooking, shakes, baking, or a plain old peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

We got out and braved the cool winds yesterday and managed to have a rather good time at the Scarborough Renaissance Faire. Aside from wondering in search of food and drink trying to stay warm, most of the day consisted of enjoying the shows and shopping the local merchant stands. One of the neat things about the event is the number of merchants who peddle in goods that you don't typically find in your normal stores.

There are a good number of artists there who sell their paintings, metal works, glass works, soaps, wood works, and candles. One of the purchases that I am most excited about, apart from our new collection of soaps, is a beeswax candle that, according to the lady behind the counter, has positive ions that pull allergens out of the air. I didn't really care about that part. I just thought it looked pretty cool and might smell good. I'm easy to please.

The day concluded with our traditional sword fight where we fight for glory and honor or, more accurately, the amusement of our wives, girlfriends or whatever other crowd might gather. It was a hard fought contest this year. In the end, I was able to scrap by with a win, but not before the newest entry Jack put out an incredible fight. I came very close to losing my crown and fear that next year I might not be able to defend against such a flurry of attacks.

Tomorrow, Erica and I will head down to Waxahachie for our annual Scarborough Renaissance Faire trip with our friends. As it stands now, I believe that we have a group of 8 to 10 of us going. Much like last year, it looks like it is going to be wet and muddy. It also looks like it might be cold.

Thankfully, I still have my cheap shoes from last year. They are ready to one again get muddy. As for the wet rain, I'm hopping that the food and drink help to keep us warm. Since it is Texas, the weather can always change. So, I'll check again in the morning to see if it is still the same. Either way, I'm ready to defend my title as the Vortex sword fighting champion. ;)

I follow a couple of cartons for the blog. One is Brewster Rocket and the other is Pearls Before Swine. Sometimes, it can be hard to choose one because both are typically written as serials. I do try to mix it up and throw other ones in the rotation, but I admit that I get stuck on these two a lot because they make me laugh. This week, they both included characters from the Family Circle. Coeincidence?

Green Tip: If you qualified for a tax refund this year or are getting a rebate check, consider converting some of that windfall to good works with a contribution to an environmental charity. (Do Your Part: Take time to find a group that represents your interests and concerns. These five well-known organizations are among hundreds competing for your support: Clean Water Action; Coast Alliance; Friends of the Earth; Natural Resources Defense Council; Sierra Club.)

Bonus Tip: While you're still thinking about taxes, keep in mind that improvements to your home's insulation can reduce your bill under federal legislation passed in 2005. Homeowners may be eligible for a 10 percent tax credit on insulation purchase and installation, up to a total of $500. [Brought to you by Page-a-Day calendars.]

If you follow the link about getting a rebate, you'll see that the government is starting to send the "rebate" checks out next week. So if you have been contacted about receiving a check, and you did electronic refund, you might see a deposit in your account sometime next week. Apparently, those who paper filled can expect to see their checks within the next three to four weeks. My wife and I are ready to put our to good use by donating a portion and placing the rest of it into savings.

Even though there is not a merger everyday in the business page, there are still some big deals that go through. Today, the owner of Arby's, Triarc Companies, has announced that they are going to purchase Wendy's for an all stock deal. The Wendy's family does not seem to happy with the deal, but the business is going to be bought regardless.

I had watched a documentary the other day about corporations. The film, The Corporation, is a fantastic film if you are ever interested in learning a bit of history about our modern corporate structure. One of the points that they make in the film is that corporations spend a lot of time branding their name to make us, the consumers, feel like we are part of the family. Wendy's is a good example of a corporation that succeeded with me. I always felt like it was a bit more of a family owned place. Maybe that was because I grew up with Dave Thomas, the founder, telling me that Wendy's had the answer to "Where's the Beef?" I guess that's business.

I'm beginning to feel like we're never going to get to the final match-up for the presidential election. With the primary season still in full swing for the Democratic Party, we've got another five plus weeks of primaries and caucuses to go. Even after the last vote is cast in Montana and South Dakota, I get the feeling that we won't know the winner. It's times like these that I wish I was back in college in some of my old political science classes just to be involved in some of the discussions.

Here is an interesting fact about the remaining primaries and caucus. Puerto Rico has the fourth most delegates available at 63. It comes in just under Oregon's 65. If you take out the super-delegates, it actually has more. Not bad for a commonwealth.

Quiz Day: What Does Your Taste in Chocolate Say About You?

You are intense, powerful, and dramatic.
People respect the things you do...
And they're not sure if they could do them!

You are dominant and a bit over powering at times.
You're so brilliant, you have trouble letting anyone else be in charge.
While people respect you, they find you to be withdrawn and aloof.

You love being around people. Friendships are important to you.
You feel lost when you're by yourself... so you tend to avoid being alone.

It shouldn't come as a big surprise, but we've found something else that is widely used is bad for us:

"Manufacturers, retailers, and regulatory agencies consider eliminating a potentially harmful chemical from plastic sport and baby bottles."

That's right. The sports bottles that we are found of toting around with us at the gym or the sippy cups that we give to our kids contain a chemical called bisphenol-A (BPA). After a recent study, the Canadian government has decided that this chemical is closely enough linked to possible cancer or reproductive problems that it has banned the sale of the bottles containing this chemical.

One week after the decision by the Canadian government, the main company that makes the majority of these bottles has decided to phase out the use of this chemical over the next few months. Good call Nalgene.

Green Tip: Development makes vast tracts of land inhospitable to animal life each year. Make your yard more wildlife-friendly to help offset these losses by planting native species, especially those that produce nectar and edible fruits, seeds, or leaves (they'll also require less watering). You can keep at least a tenth of the area "natural"-lawn free-to reserve space for animals. Install a birdbath or other water source. And be prepared to fence off your vegetable and flower gardens unless you're willing to share them, too.

Bonus: If spring weather has landscaping on your mind, think about using an old farm trick to guide your tree planting. Plant evergreens on your house's windy side (usually west) and broadleaf varieties on the sunny side (normally south). That way, you're catching the sun in the winter and shade in the summer, and you're screened from harsh winds year round. (These tips brought to you by Page-a-Day calendar.)

It has been eleven years filled with oft rumored release dates and album reports, but now it is confirmed that Portishead is releasing their third album on April 28th, 2008. The title of the album is Third. Being this close to the release date and given the fact that they have a really sweet box set, I'm going to call this official. And, I'm excited about it.

Portishead is one of my favorite bands from the 90's. Their unique sound defined a whole new genre of music called trip-hop. The eerie voice of Beth Gibons over the dark sounds and beats of Adrian Utley and Geoff Barrow make beautiful sounds burst forth from the speakers even today. The first two albums are timeless in my mind.

Of course, there is always the possibility of a let down when you've waited over ten years for an album. Nevertheless, I'll get it. I'm expecting it to be a different work and sound. I'm hoping that the years have aged it well like a good wine. In just under two weeks, anyone still waiting on the album will, thankfully, get a chance to draw their won conclusions.

I watched my seventh and eight hour of television last night. FRONTLINE had a special on last night about health care systems in five other industrialized nations and how they compare to America. I'll spare my thoughts on this program since I've already share them on another blog. However, the show that I got suckered in to afterwards,Independent Lens, is also worthy of a little discussion.

The documentary, King Corn, was featured showed two young film makers who plotted out, planted, and grew one acre of corn in Iowa and tracked where that corn went after it was put into the market place. Quite simply, this show was a big eye opener. If you've ever wondered what is in a lot of the processed food that we eat, it's corn. Beef that goes on the table? Corn. Soda? Corn.

The great irony of the movie is that we have so overly modified our corn stock to make it resistant to pesticide and create such high yields that we can no longer eat most of the corn grown on the farms without processing it first. I couldn't believe how far the reach of corn is. The film does a wonderful job exploring this reach and the interaction of the farmers and the government in an easy to follow way. I would certainly recommend watching this on repeat on PBS or checking it out from a video store or Netflix.

I ended what was otherwise a relaxing evening by giving myself two injuries within 15 hours. Since I'm normally pretty good at avoiding damage, they came as a surprise. The first was a minor cut with a knife that I got on my finger while I was preparing diner. Knife cuts are never a good thing but, properly cleaned, they are minor. The second, however, was even dumber.

I awoke this morning to a very cold apartment. Normally I would love it this way, but we just moved our heavy blankets into storage for the summer last week. Thus, I woke up much colder then I otherwise would have been. But the coldness was only one factor in my numb awakening this morning. The much bigger factor was the loud car crash that took place right outside the front window.

Hearing a loud screech and the blast of a horn, I heard the dead crumpling sound of metal hitting metal. Dazed but with adrenaline flowing, I came to the conclusion that it was not a dream and jumped from bed to look out the window to see if the wreck was viewable. There, just 20 feet from my front door, was a white Chevy Malibu that had been T-boned by smaller SUV. Once I saw that both parties to the accident were alright, calm, and beginning to contact insurance providers, I went back to catch another hour or so of sleep.

This was where the cold combined with the sudden jolt of early morning adrenaline came into play. My feet were freezing, so I adjusted some blankets to cover up more efficiently. Somehow, I managed to cut myself by catching my thumbnail against the side of my nose while pulling the covers up. But the damaged wasn't fully assessed until I awoke from my second slumber this morning. I guess if it scars, I'll always have a funny story.

Getting great deals while shopping is always fun, but we might have gone overboard last night at the grocery store. My wife and I went to Kroger yesterday and had a blast stacking coupons, getting the weekly deals, and using the store bonuses. The pantry is full, and we are going to eat well for the next few weeks. I felt like we had a very successful hunt.

Rick brought to my attention a note that he had received from the Texas Campaign for the Environment. It deals with recent legislation that was passed by both houses in the Texas legislature that will require producers to provide consumers with convenient and responsible recycling for electronic waste such as computers, monitors, TV's, game systems, etc. Currently, the vote on the new guidelines has been delayed to give the public a chance to voice they opinions.

This is a chance to do something positive for our environment. Write your representative and the state environmental agency to encourage strong requirements on producers to provide recycling options for electronic waste. Go here to find a quick letter formate that can signed and mailed. It is an easy way to help make a better tomorrow.

The weather got a little crazy last night. I apparently slept right through it. I didn't really notice that it was bad until I was notified by my wife that the tree about 60 feet in front of our apartment was ripped in half. On the drive into work, I noticed a multitude of traffic lights blinking or out completely. The Kroger that I stopped by this morning had no power. There were signs of the destructive power of nature all around on the short commute. Sufficient to say, the tree choppers are going to be very busy today.

I learned about a new feature called blogger in draft yesterday. Essentially, this allows for easy changes, such as adding new elements, to the blog even though some of the changes might not be a permanent addition to the blogger family. I took a little bit of time yesterday and played with a few options. Here is what I changed:

Added the MLB Scoreboard on the right hand column. (Located between Friends of Sugarless D and Boredom Busters.) While I know that not everyone is a big baseball fan, Rick and I are and this makes checking the scores and standings a breeze.

Added This Day in History on the right hand column. (Located between Blog Archive and Labels.) If you're a history fan, you're going to like this one. Each day a random historical fact is generated with a synopsis in the side bar. You can learn more by opening the fact in a new tab or window.

Added Search This Blog on the bottom of the central column. (Located below the stat counter.) I've wanted this feature for a while. It might be of primary use to me; however, you can now search through the entries for this blog to find an old posting. If you are feeling adventurous, you can expand your search to any of the following options: Linked from Here, Enlightening Locations, Friends of Sugarless D, Other Blog to Read @ Ur Own Risk, Boredom Busters, Virtual Sugarless D, and The Web. (Since it is at the bottom of the page, viewing the results of a completed search does require one to scroll back to the top. This is a minor inconvenience that I hope they improve upon.)

In a rare move, I woke up at 6 AM today and actually decided to stay awake thereafter. I had a movie that I needed to watch so that I could return it to Netflix. Once breakfast was cooked, I settled in to watch Rocket Science. This was a movie that I had seen a preview for last year and was interested in seeing. I am glad to say that it is quite the independent film charmer.

It might sound odd, but I was originally drawn to this film because the background story revolved around debate. (I debated Lincoln-Douglas debate for three years in high school.) I was certainly happy to see that Rocket Science does a wonderful job of viewing the world of high school policy debate, aka cross-examination. It was no surprise to find out that the director, Jeffery Blitz, was a former high school debater.

Involving an odd cast of characters, some of whom are shy and searching for a voice while others are brash and achievement driven, the story captures the awkwardness of high school and the painfulness involved in growing up. The lead character, Hal Hefner, is a stutterer who is isolated at his school and at home. When he is asked to join the high school debate team by the top debater, Ginny Ryerson, he begins his journey towards finding his voice.

At times, the movie itself is awkward and painful to watch. I believe that this enhances the realness of the film and adds to the depth of the protagonist. The movie is well paced, but is by no means action oriented. This is a character driven film, and the development of the lead role is what leads to moments that are, at times, uncomfortable to watch. Nevertheless, the film has a heart to it as it treats the characters as real people rather than stereotypes.

If you are looking for a good movie to watch on the weekend, then I would recommend Rocket Science. This film is certainly not going to be for everyone. Let me know if you like it or not. Either way, I think it is a chance worth taking. Movie Rating: 4 1/2 out of 5.

We did not get in the Perfect 10 bagels this week. They were supposed to be here yesterday, but they were not delivered.

We got restocked on the PB2 again. We're finally starting to get our rotation down. If you're looking for a great tasting one point peanut butter, come in and try this. You're going to like it.

At some point in time today, the counter on this blog should roll over to 15,000. I think that is a pretty neat accomplishment. Thanks to everyone for reading and sticking with us over these last two years. We've had a great time doing it.

The first week of the baseball season has passed. It is now time for my annual baseball predictions. With the new label bar that I put on the blog this week, it was easy to go back and find my predictions from last year. I am not a psychic by any measure, so I wont place any significant bets on these predictions. For giggles only:

NL East: Philadelphia
NL Central: Milwaukee
NL West: LA Dodgers
NL Wildcard: San Diego

AL East: Boston (This pains me.)
AL Central: Cleveland
AL West: Angels from Anaheim
AL Wildcard: NY Yankees

Rick's Picks:

NL East: Atlanta
NL Central: Cubs
NL West: San Diego
NL Wildcard: Philadelphia

AL East: Boston
AL Central: Cleveland
AL West: Angels
AL Wildcard: Toronto

We'll go back and revisit these picks after the all-star game. We're pretty close on the American League, but the National League is a different story. We'll see who prevails. If you've got your own picks, feel free to leave a comment with them on the blog.

Green Tip: Programs to recycle paper-including newsprint-are widespread across the country. Take advantage of the arrangements in your area. (Most local schools have large bins that except both paper and cardboard.) Check to see if your local programs require papers to be tied or bagged, and whether they involve drop-off locations or curbside pickup. If every American recycled just one newspaper a week, about 36 million trees a year would be spared. Making recycled newspaper takes half as much energy as producing virgin newsprint. [Brought to you by Page-a-Day calendar.]

One of the biggest changes that we have made at Sugarless deLite in the last 6 months has been the implementation of our recycling program. Since November, we have been recycling all cardboard boxes that come into our store. This is quite a good number. On average, we recycle between 30 and 40 boxes a week. Additionally, we have started reusing some of the incoming boxes for outgoing shipments. From our shipping policy:

"Sugarless deLite is interested in helping both our local and global environment. When shipping to an individual who has ordered for themselves, we will attempt to use a recycled cardboard box for shipping from shipments that we have received in the store. We will not use boxes that have had direct contact with food products. Boxes that are unused for future shipping are recycled. We encourage all recipients to recycle their boxes as well. Items that are shipped as gifts will be shipped in a new cardboard box."

We've also taken the extra step of recycling our Coke cans and bottled water along with any papers that do not have sensitive information and plastics. As an added step, we try to turn off any lights not in use as well. Not only do we blog green, we work green.

Happy Birthday Wishes to Robert John Downey, Jr. Robert Downey Jr. has appeared in over 60 films in his career. He was in one of my favorite films from the 80's called Less than Zero. After a period of problems with drug abuse, he has turned his career back around and is now back to staring roles and will be featured in Iron Man in May of this year. He will also play the role of Tony Stark in the upcoming film The Incredible Hulk which stars Edward Norton and Liv Tyler. It looks likes it is going to be a good summer for superheros.

(Honorable birthday mentions: Jamie Lynn Spears-Actress, David Edward Kelley-Producer and Writer, Scott Rolen-Baseball Player, Johan Magnus Sveningsson-Musician: bassist for the Cardigans.)

Each day I check our eBay store to see if we've had any orders come in over the evening. On the home page, there is always an ad for some fantastic eBay offers. Recently, there have been a good number of celebrity auctions. Spend time with so and so type things that benefit certain charities. The one for today was Jennifer Love Hewitt.

What I find funny about the offering is not the 5,600 dollars that someone is willing to pay for this auction. (I'm sure that will go higher.) The interesting part is that there is a $12.95 charge for USPS Priority Mail shipping and handling charges. Seriously? I understand that things cost money to send; however, at $5,600 or more, I would expect the shipping to be included or, at the least, reflect the actual cost of the shipping charge. Am I wrong?

I hope that everyone had a good April Fools Day. There were some pretty good spoofs out there on the web. But, I didn't have anyone try to prank us at the store. I had a good one planned for my wife; however, she was not feeling well yesterday, so it will have to wait for another day.

Today, you get not only a bonus offer on the blog specials, but you also get a bonus quiz. In the effort to be fair and unbiased, I present to you the following:

Quiz Day: How Much of a Democrat Are You?

You Are 44% Democrat

You aren't a full fledged Democrat yet, but it's likely the party that fits you best.

You probably consider yourself an independent Democrat. You usually support the party, but you also think for yourself!

Bonus Quiz: How Much of a Republican Are You?

You Are 40% Republican

You're a bit Republican, and probably more conservative than you realize.

If you're still voting Democrat, maybe it's time that you stop.

You know the drill. Leave a comment if you want to do so. Make sure to leave both results for a fun comparison.

Found in a magazine this week: Sites for swapping book.

Bookmooch.com, Bookins.com, and Paperbackswap.com
Site Sources: Black Enterprise & The New York Times

Each site approaches the book swap a little bit differently, but if you are looking for a way to trade in some of your old books without getting pennies on the dollar, these sites might work well for you. Also, you're not using any virgin paper when you swap, so you're helping the environment as well by getting books used. I'm looking forward to trying out the service and trading some of the books that I have finished. Of course, another great option for used books is to donate them to a local charity, church, library, or school.
