Brrrrrr!

When I left work last night, it was like a nice spring day. When I got out of my car 7 minutes later at Kroger, the cold front had started to blow into town. Over the next few hours, the weather completely changed. I awoke to a nice cool apartment after sleeping the sound sleep that the cold always brings.

As for that snow day, I don't think that anyone is going to get one. The weather looks like it might cause a few problems today during the mid-day hours and possibly during the morning commute tomorrow; however, the temperature tomorrow is supposed to be in the upper forties. It's time for a fire and some hot chocolate (we happen to have some excellent hot chocolate available in the store).

The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Mocha, Toffee Nut, Roasted Almond and Strawberry Shortcake.

The bagels have arrived! We have a full selection of Blueberry, Cinnamon, Onion, Sweet Wheat, White and Perfect 10. We also have the English Muffins and Pita. Come in and get yours today.

Artic Blast

You wouldn't know it by the temperature this morning but, in 12 hours time, we will have our first real cold weather of the year. I've heard a lot of talk about the weather and what it will do over the evening and tomorrow during the day. The cold front is going to start blowing in later this afternoon just in time for the drive home from work; however, the rain won't start until early tomorrow morning. The weather report is showing rain and mixed precipitation during the afternoon hours tomorrow. With past few days of warmth, we should not experience many problems on the road as a result unless people go crazy and forget how to drive or if they take the advice of some of the answers to yesterday's quiz.

If you were hoping for a snow day, you may have to wait till the next round. Nevertheless, this is Texas and the weather can change at any moment. Just make sure to grab a jacket if you're heading out tonight. If you're staying inside for the evening, pull down an extra blanket for the next few days.

Today is free small yogurt day for all UT Dallas students. Come in and show us your student ID for a free small throughout the day. (Limit one per person.)

Wonderful Photo Wednesday:

All photos are from www.SnowCrystals.com. There are several galleries with additional photos and there is a lot of great information available on this site.

1. Snowflakes look white because you see light scattered from all the edges, much like the white you see on a surface of scratched or etched glass. They’re actually transparent.

2. Snowflakes are made of ordinary ice, but they are neither frozen raindrops nor do they come from liquid water. Snowflakes form when ice condenses directly from water vapor in air.

3. Snowflake shapes change dramatically with temperature. Thin, plate-like crystals grow when the weather is just below freezing; slender columns and needles form when it is a few degrees colder. Especially large flakes appear when the temperature is around -15 degrees C (5 degrees F).

4. A snow crystal refers to a single crystal of ice. The term ‘snowflake’ can refer to a single snow crystal or a mass of many snow crystals that float to earth.

5. A snowflake has six arms and while the arms grow simultaneously, not all snowflakes are symmetrical.

6. Snowflakes are frequently decorated with small ice particles called rime, colored droplets that collided with the crystals during flight and froze on their surfaces.

7. Thirty five different types of snow crystals have been identified, including bullet rosettes, radiating dendrites, 12-branched stars and arrowhead twins.

8. Because they are so small, it is best to view a snowflake with some optical gear. A basic magnifying lens, available at drug stores or a jeweler’s loupe are recommended.

9. It is generally believed that no two snowflakes are exactly alike. As it blows around inside a cloud, a developing crystal experiences ever-changing temperatures and humidity levels. Each change in its local environment causes a change in the way the crystal grows. After numerous twists and tumbles, the final structure can be quite complex. Because no two snowflakes follow the exactly same path, it can be concluded that no two snowflakes are exactly alike.

10. Snow crystals often show many flat, crystalline surfaces, or facets. Bright reflections off these mirror-like facets give freshly fallen snow its sparkle.

Warm today...cold tomorrow.

I think that I was actually hot on the way into work today. The humidity and the temperature created a situation where the vent was just not quiet enough. That is OK because tomorrow evening we get some of the weather that I love. There is a chance for a wintry mix with the upcoming cold front; however, I think that will probably be mostly in the evening. I'll let you know if my right index finger starts hurting tomorrow. (Seriously, it is almost as reliable as the Farmer's Almanac.) Either way, Sugarless deLite doesn't plan on taking a snow day. We'll be here to serve you.

99 Red Ballons

One way that I can tell that I have slept well is by looking in the mirror. The crazier the hair is, the better I have slept. Anyone who has had the pleasure or horror of seeing me on such a morning can attest to the fact that I can have some wild hair. This morning was no exception. After a very busy Thanksgiving weekend, I got some serious Z's over the last two nights. It has been very nice.

Today is buy one, get one free (limit one, excludes XL) for yogurt between 6PM and 8PM.

As I was watching the weather this weekend, I saw the forecast for the upcoming weekend and smiled. We get our first real cold front this week on Thursday. I love the cold in part because I grew up in cooler climates. I also love staying in be a little longer and sleeping a little better. I also love to lite a fire because the fireplace is a great place to huddle up to with family and friends (as long as the flume is open). Warm weather has it's place, but give me a cold winter to really get me in the holiday spirit.

The December calendar will be available in the store on Wednesday and posted on-line on the first of December. I hope that everyone has a wonderful start to their week. To those of you who are talking finals this week: Good Luck! Just think of it as a one more step on the journey to freedom.

If you're curious about the title for today's blog entry, I can only say that this song is stuck in my head today for some reason. ;)

"Laser Beams"

The baker often has interesting tidbits of information to hand out at the start of the work day. Today, he told me that there is a new type of TV that is coming out next year that uses lasers to create the projection. These reportedly use less power and have a much more vivid display. The price point on these TVs should also compete with current technology. Consider it a heads up if you are thinking about getting into the HDTV game this year. It may serve well to hold off for one more year.

I've got a lot for which to be thankful. I think if most of us took a few moments to look around, we would see how fortunate we really are. This year, I've made more time to slow down and enjoy what I have been given, and giving in return, rather than looking for what I don't have. It has been a great change of pace. Enjoy the rest of your weekend and the start of the holiday season. (Christmas music 24/7)

Stuffed Like a Turkey

I hope that everyone had a fantastic Thanksgiving day. I know that I did because I got to spend it with my girlfriends family and share a wonderful meal with them. I got to cook a little and lounge a little and watch a little bit of football. It was great being able to spend the special day of thanks with a family that I know loves each other dearly.

We played Trivial Pursuit (90's edition) during the evening. This version seems to have a lot of focus on pop culture. :( My girlfriend and her grandfather won. Congratulations. I take my games seriously, but I have fun playing them and it was nice to play through a game.

Friday Fun Fact: The Mason jar was invented by John L. Mason in 1858. Mason was a tinsmith and came up with the idea of screwed threads for the lid on glass jars that allowed them to be reclosable and reusable. The Mason jar immediately changed lifestyles and diets. Until then, root cellars, pickle barrels, and smokehouses were needed to preserve food through winter. For the first time, vegetables and fruits could be kept for later use.

Last Chance!

My girlfriend and I visited Prestonwood Church a few weeks ago and they had shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child which is similar to the Angel trees that are often found at malls this time of year. We each picked up a box for one boy and girl. On Thursday we did our shopping and last night I packed them which was no easy task.

One of my favorite types of challenge is one that deals with spatial relations. Packing puzzles and things of the like can be frustrating at times, but they are entertaining and the reward is worthwhile. After around 25 minutes for each box, I managed to get almost everything into the shoe boxes. There is something great about giving. I look forward to dropping the boxes off tomorrow.

When Smoke Gets in Your Eyes

Last night was the first evening when it seemed like a great idea to start a fire. I've never had a fireplace that I have used at any of my other apartments and thought that it was high time to use it. Here are a couple of fire safety tips for the cold winter months:

1. Make sure the flume is open. If you have a question about this, you can light a small piece of paper, hold it under the flume and see if the smoke rises straight up.

2. Use a clean burning fire log instead of wood. There are now have several environmentally friendly options that burn for several hours and create much less smoke and particulate matter.

3. When using a clean burning log, follow the directions and do not add additional fuel to the fire. In particular, paper is bad and may lead to a very smoky apartment which can in turn set off a fire detector thus necessitating one to open all of the windows and the patio door to alleviate the smoke but, in the process, cooling off the entire apartment to 57 degrees and therefore nullifying the original purpose of the fire.

4. Don't leave a fire unattended and make sure to spread out the ash to remove any hot spots.

5. Share it with someone special. Should the events in number three occur, pray that the person you are sharing the warm and smoky fire with is good humored and able to laugh with you. :)

Fun Fact Friday: One of great Western movies of all time features a czarist Russian playing an American gunslinger, a German playing a hotheaded Mexican peasant, and a Brooklyn Jew playing a bandito. For The Magnificent Seven, the 1960 adaptation of Akira Kurosawa's masterpiece Seven Samurai, executive producer Walter Mirisch and director John Sturges cast Yul Brynner to play the leader of the hired guns, Horst Buchholz to play Chico, the peasant-turned-gunman, and Eli Wallach to play the Mexican villain.

Hello Moto!

My Motorola L2 arrived yesterday. I like this phone a lot more than the Sony Ericsson w300i. It will take a little bit of time to figure out how everything works on it because I am so used to Nokia phones. I might even cheat and read the manual. Nevertheless, it is nice to have a simple phone back in my hands that I don't feel like I'm going to break or accidentally trigger a camera, internet or iTune explosion. Yes, I am old fashioned. I still like a phone that is a phone. I am happier now that I have one. (It is really nice and shinny too.)

It is the home stretch for ordering your holiday pies. There are three days left to get your orders into the store. Remember if you need a good low calorie and low fat option, our Chocolate Crème, Coconut Crème and Pumpkin Pie are all excellent choices.

Please buy accordingly.

Last week's poll showed salmon as the resounding favorite for best fish. This week I am going to skip the poll question and switch to the comment game. The question for today is what is the first CD that you bought?

My second CD was U2's the Joshua Tree...the first was Richard Marx's Repeat Offender (What can I say? It was the 80's and his mullet was cooler than Bono's mullet.)

Season of Change

I stayed up late last night reading a couple of books so that I could move on to the next chapter. It is nice knowing that something is almost finished and that a new challenge awaits, but the key is to see it through to the end. I used to be really bad at this. I would often be in the middle of 5 or 6 books because I would get half way or 2/3 of the way through one and start another. Thankfully, I no longer operate this way. Full steam ahead!

I was actually awake when the winds of change came around last night. A mighty wind it was. This morning I awoke to no power and rain. Two surprises that made it slightly more tricky to get ready for work today. But, the water was working and I have candles at home so overall, it wasn't very inconvenient...just a little weird.

Breakthrough?

After spending the first hour of the morning on the phone with Cingular, I think that I may have resolved my phone issue. I have a new candy bar style phone on the way with no camera or music feature. This will be a nice change from the flip phone that I currently have. I understand that the flip phones are all the rage, but I am like an old man...I know what I like and I don't need to change it. I tried and it didn't work. Assuming that all of the information that I was told today was correct which is a dangerous thing, then I should not be charged anything other than shipping for this phone. It will be nice to have this all settled. I will give a very hesitant, but hopeful yay and a thank you to Mary Jean at Cingular. :/

Of course, that is how Mondays start sometimes, but if you persevere, it is almost always worthwhile. The weekend was short but refreshing. My girlfriend and I tried a new salmon recipe that was really good and pretty easy to make. I love getting to cook and having a new recipe turn out well is always an added bonus. Sunday also saw several great shopping expeditions which included one to Albertsons after church where we purchase around 68 dollars worth of merchandise for about 35 dollars. (Thank you 25% off sale and double and triple coupons.) I also got another person marked off the Christmas list. I'm almost finished.

Chilly Willy

It sure was nice to have the cold front move through last night. I opened up the windows and let the cool air sweep through the apartment. By bedtime, I had managed to take the temperature from 75 to 68 degrees which is a much better for sleeping. Tonight is supposed to be a little on the chilly side at 36 degrees. I might actually be able to have a fire tonight. :)

The store is looking more and more like Christmas every day. The merchandise is around 70% made (we do all the boxes and tins here at the store), the decorations are going up this weekend and the music will start going in next weekend. It's only six weeks away.

I had to turn my A/C on last night. It was a little depressing. But, with the oven going, the internal temperature at 81 plus and no breeze coming from the outside, it seemed a good idea. The A/C was still turning on when I went to bed at 1 AM to keep the apartment at a nice and cool 78. It's almost the middle of November? Red vs. Blue

There is something about watching a train wreck that makes it so hard to turn away. It doesn’t help that my degree from UT Dallas is a Political Science degree. Last night was kind of like the Rose Bowl for poly sci people. If you’re a fan, you have to watch it. After watching around 5 straight hours of the watching the results roll in, I turned off the TV at 1 AM when I knew that the final two states (Virginia and Montana) would probably not be decided until a month of litigation and a recount. Somehow I don’t think that this is what the Founding Fathers had in mind. Welcome to democracy in the 21st century.

I hope that everyone got a chance to vote. If you didn't get a sticker, you are not the only one. My polling station also did not give the traditional I Voted sticker. I was a little bummed about this, but I think that my shirt yesterday let people know that I had participated in our democratic system. (I can't believe that they let me wear it into the polling station.)

Drum Up the Vote

I think that some of the best sleep that you can have is when there is a little rain in the background. (The real stuff, not the electric alarm clock variety.) Tomorrow, November 7th, remember to get out and vote. Make a little extra time during your day to make our democracy work. It is a privilege that we are afforded and it is something that we should embrace because our votes do matter. Keep yourself and our country healthy.

Bonus Thought:

"When a man has once broken through the paper walls of everyday circumstance, those unsubstantial walls that hold so many of us securely prisoned from the cradle to the grave, he has made a discovery. If the world does not please you, you can change it. Determine to alter it at any price, and you can change it altogether. You may change it into something sinister and angry, to something appalling, but it may be you will change it to something brighter, more agreeable, and at the worst something much more interesting."

Past, Present, Future

Nostalgia can be fun. I put the album Bleed American by Jimmy Eat World into the CD player this morning. It's kind of fun to listen to it and remember back when it came out a few years back. It really is a good album and it was one that I listened to a lot. It can be fun to look back. For that matter, it can be fun to look forward. The most fun, however, is being happy with where you are in the present.

The fact that it was 62 in my apartment this morning made it harder to get out of bed; however, once I got up, I loved it. You can take a boy out of Minnesota, but you can't take the love of cold away from him.

Friday Fun Fact: The practice of trepanation, the surgical act of boring holes into the skull, began 7,000 years ago and still continues today. Trepanning-surgically making a circular opening in the skull-began in the Neolithic era, evidently for health and spiritual reasons. Evidence of the practice has been found in Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americans. Some believed the purpose was to release "ill humors." Today, there is a new movement of "trepanation advocates," led by jeweler and tree-grower Peter Halvorson of Pennsylvania. Halvorson founded the International Trepanation Advocacy Group after trepanning himself with a scalpel, four drill bits, and an electric drill secured to his bathroom ceiling that he controlled with his foot.

Back to Work

After a nine day layoff due to family, pseudo-illness (allergies) and laziness, I got back into the gym last night. (OK, laziness was the biggest component.) As I was watching the news seeing everything that is wrong with the world because all the good things never seem to get any coverage, I realized that I was putting off my work out again. The proverbial devil popped up on my left shoulder and told me that it was too late (11 PM), but the proverbial angel also appeared and told me that I was being a lazy bum.

Earlier in the year, I would have listened to the devil. The funny thing about it is that the more you listen to the angel the less pull the devil has and the more you can discern the truth from the falsehoods. You begin to recognize that your body's real message is not "You're too tired to exercise." Rather, you know that it is saying, "You're so tired because you’re not exercising." Behold, the truth was the latter. After an hour work out with a 1.5 mile, I felt much better and slept like a log.

Pie Month Begins

I did a bit of mall shopping yesterday since I don’t really have a pair of jeans that fit anymore. (I blame working out. I knew that there had to be a downside to it.) Apparently, kids trick-or-treat at the mall and expect innocent shoppers to have candy for them. Tough luck kids, you picked the wrong shopper. I didn’t even know that the group of children were asking me for candy until the mother hen said, “Well, do you have candy for them or not?” Note to self: Avoid the malls on Halloween.

Of course the end of Halloween means the start of the Christmas holiday season. Over the next few days you will begin to see the halls decked out at all of your favorite retail stores. Ours is no exception. During the first few weeks of November, you will have the opportunity to get some good savings on your holiday shopping needs if you are an early shopper. The first of our holiday items go up today!
