Trade Deadline

Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Coffee Royal, Butterscotch, Strawberry Shortcake, New York Cheesecake.

Sierra deLite Day! Come in and get one of our most popular items from the bakery, the Sierra deLite bar, for only $3.25 when you ask for the special price (regularly $4.50).

We got in our first of two shipments for Baja Bob's. We have the Original and the Dessert Lime back in stock.

The bagels, pita, and English Muffins are in stock. We have all varieties available. Come in and enjoy today. Don't forget the bonus buy pricing.

With less than 24 hours to go in the trade deadline for baseball, some big names have started to move. Mark Teixeira got moved to the Angels. Pudge has been moved to the Yankees. The big surprise of the day is that Ken Griffey Jr. has been traded to the White Sox. There is still a watch for Manny Ramirez. While it is possible that he will get traded, I have a feeling that this will end like it has for the last few years with him staying in Boston.

The high level of big names being moved just goes to show how close many of the teams feel that they are to getting to the playoffs. The strongest single trade was made by the Angels, but the Yankess did a great job at getting several trades made that help them shore up several positions. We'll see if giving up Kyle Farnsworth, who was having a great year, was a good call. Hopefully, Pudge will be able to help the Yankees to an AL Pennant.

It was a bit odd walking out of my front door this morning only to feel raindrops on my face. Granted we are long over due for rain. There is a 40% chance throughout the day, but I don't think that it will translate to much cooler weather. The high should still top out at 98 degrees. Nevertheless, I'm hoping that we get a good rain shower or two during the day. It would be nice to see more than just a sprinkling.

Quiz Day: Are You a Narcissist?

You Are Occasionally a Narcissist

While you have healthy self esteem, you're really not that full of yourself.
Compared to most people, you're quite humble!

Though occasionally, you can't help and reflect on how great you are.
There's nothing wrong with being proud of yourself - as long as you don't let it go to your head!

You can tell by the ads in the paper that the summer time is getting ready to come to a close. Even though most school districts are starting later this year, the stores are already promoting their back to school specials. Of course, tax free weekend is coming up as well (Aug. 15-17). That is a weekend that I can certainly say that I will not step foot in a store other than Sugarless deLite.

The next month or so will see people taking their final vacation. One more quick get away before the reality of the school year and the holidays come around. Even if you don't have children, the time from September until the end of the year always seems to accelerate. This year has already seemed to go by quicker than normal, but I have a feeling that it will speed up as the holidays approach. In the meantime, we've got plenty to keep us busy.

We'll hire on a new staff over the next few weeks as UTD gets back into session. Odds are that you will see new faces to help you while you shop. Each school year brings a few new employees. Be gentle. We're going to add another 3 to 4 to the staff to help out with the fall and the Christmas holiday season which means I'll have a fair amount of training to do.

Wheel In the Sky

Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Coffee Royal, Devil's Food Cake, Strawberry Shortcake, New York Cheesecake.

Brownie Special: Buy 2 brownies for five dollars (regularly $3.49 each). Limit four. Please ask us for the brownie special to receive the discount.

I spent last night at the Cheap Trick/Heart/Journey concert. The most interesting thing about the concert was the number of younger people in the crowd. Well over 40% of the crowd seemed to be under the age of 40 with a lot of early 20's thrown into the mix. The bands came on stage and played their hit songs. As it goes with most of older bands, the new songs met with a lukewarm acceptance and their big numbers had the crowds singing right along.

The old bands from the 70's and 80's often seem to lack the drive of bands on the rise. There are exceptions. Aerosmith comes to mind. But, many of them seem to suffer. That doesn't mean that they make for a bad show. By the time you throw in a good size group of friends, the shows can be pretty good. You might not leave thinking that they rocked, but it's usually worth seeing.

The new lead singer Arnel Pineda did have an amazing voice. He sounded very similar to Steve Perry. I think that over the next year his stage presence should grow and the band should become more comfortable with each other. Nevertheless, they've got the sound down.

Trading Away?

Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Caramel, Devil's Food Cake, Orange Vanilla, and Vanilla Malt.

Yogurt Special: Come in this evening from 6 PM to 8 PM and you can get your yogurt buy one, get one free (limit one per customer, excludes XL). Just ask us for the special.

Tomorrow, we have our Coke floats on sale for $2.99 (regularly $4.62).

The Yankees have made a move before the trade dead-line that should bolster their position in the AL East where they are currently sitting only three games back from the lead. They're finally starting to look like they might actually be a playoff team. I'm not really sure that they would go anywhere in the playoffs because they still have some pretty big holes, but anything can happen once you get there.

The Cardinals are going in the other direction in the NL Central. Losing five in row has set them 4 games back in the Central. They are playing an important series with the Brewers this weekend. If they can take two of three or get a sweep, they will still be in a good position. If it goes the other way, they might become sellers. I hope that they can rediscover their winning ways.

Tomorrow night is the Journey/Heart/Cheap Trick concert. I got roped into this one by my fraternity brothers. Not that I'm complaining because I think that it should be a pretty good show. It will also be interesting to see the new lead singer for Journey. Besides, I normally have a pretty good time when I'm out with my brothers. The young ones still need someone to keep them in line.

All shakes are $3.69 today (regularly $3.93-$4.62). Ask us for the shake special and get a cool treat.

We've gotten in a shipment of Judy's brittles and caramels today. The peanut brittle is back in stock.

Green Tip: If you're not ready to choose a hybrid car, an attractive alternative can be one of the many very small cars now on offer. The Chevy Aveo, VW Rabit, Honda Fit, Dodge Caliber, Toyota Yaris, Nissan Versa, and Mazda5 are stylish little numbers that get around 27-29 MPG in the city and 35-40 MPG on the highway, compared to a big SUV, which gets about 15-18 miles to the gallon on the highway. [This fact brought to you by Page-a-Day calendar.]

Happy Birthday Wishes to Matthew Steven LeBlanc. Mr. LeBlanc is well known as Joey from the TV show Friends. He got his start in acting with television commercials for Coca-Cola, Heinz and Levi's. He has also had roles in several movies. If the rumors hold up, he might be playing his role of Joey on the big screen when Friends comes to theaters.

A few years ago, I made a brief foray into social networking. Call me old fashioned, but it just wasn't that much fun. I prefer to actually see my friends. While it was nice to come into contact with some old friends, the fact that I had not seen a lot of them for over 10 years meant that primarily catch up emails were sent back and forth.

I don't actually do that much on the web as far as random surfing goes, but the other day I was reading a Radiohead news sit and come across a site that I was unfamiliar with called Jango. It does have aspects of a social network which I have ignored to focus on the more import function of streaming radio.

In essence, you go in and create a radio station. I'm not really familiar with Last FM or other sites. The neat thing about this one is that it plays your artists randomly. Additionally, it occasionally plays other artists that are not on your play list so that you get introduced to new music. It's a neat way to find new music.

Today's entry sees us sitting at just over 17,000 hits in at our 28 month point. It's still funny to think that I've written over 700 of these things. While not every entry is a work of literary genius, I have written a couple that still make me laugh. Come to think of it, I don't believe any of them are great literary works. :( Nevertheless, it is fun to share a little on a daily basis.

Quiz Day: What Hand Gesture Are You?

You Are a Thumbs Up

Your life philosophy can be summed up as, "Tomorrow is another day."
Your greatest wish is for everyone to be content with what they have.

You are naturally content and optimistic. You encourage people to be happy.

There are few times during the season that I get to say anything good about the Texas Rangers. This year might prove to be an exception. With their win last night over the Chicago White Sox, the Rangers moved into second place in the division. They are still nine games behind the Angels, but they are moving in the right direction. In the Wild Card race, they are only 5 1/2 games back. I'm not ready to say that they are going to go anywhere this season, but the team does look like it is finally getting back on track after a decade of futility.

I always am willing to say when I am wrong on something. As a vocal critic of the Rangers organization and Tom Hick's ownership over the last few years, I am ready to say that it looks like they have finally started to make some good decisions. If the season finishes well. They might even get me to say that I was mistaken. They will definitely get a congratulations.

I don't watch nearly as much baseball as I did; however, I still follow it pretty closely. The ability to look up the scores and standings is one of the best things about the web to me. In fact, it is one of the first things that I do when I sit down in the morning to type the blog. I check the MLB scoreboard that we put on the blog at the start of the season. It's a nice quick reference.

Big Openings

Cone Day! All yogurt cones are $2.08 today (regularly $2.77). Come in and ask for our special to get a nice cool cone.

Looks like I was not the only one who liked The Dark Knight. The new Batman film now owns the title for the biggest opening weekend in the United States with 155.3 million dollars. This film should easily see numbers well past 300 million on the domestic front.

I'm not sure if Sprouts had quite those numbers, but their grand opening did make for a busy weekend on this corner. I know that we had a good number of first time customers stop in to check us out. As long as the parking lot is not always filled to the brim, it will be nice to have them around. While Sprouts might not work as my one stop shop for groceries, it is a nice option for my produce.

After a busy weekend at the store, we had our employee summer dinner on Sunday night. Most of our workforce will turn over after this month, but I would like to thank Anna, Jason, Wylee, and Stephen for their hard work over this summer and, for Wylee and Stephen, over the years. Also, a big thank you to Rick and Stacey for the dinner.

Late Night with the Dark Knight

Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Roasted Almond, Chocolate Mint, Very Berry, and Angel Food Cake.

Cake Loaves are on sale! All of our cake loaves are on sale through today for only $14.99 (regularly $19.99). Just ask us for the sale price.

Tomorrow, we have our coke floats on sale for $2.99 (regularly $4.62).

The Dark Night was well worth the two hour wait in line last night. This movie continues the darker tone that the new series has, but takes us ever so much farther than the original. While the hype on this movie has been great, it has also been deserving.

I'm not sure if Heath Ledger will win the Oscar® that has everyone talking; however, the award would not be given without merit. His twisted take was fantastic and helped to propel the story line into a wonderful darkness that was a times almost uncomfortable to watch because of how well the psychosis of the Joker was presented.

The movie itself was a tad bit to long. A fate that unfortunately awaits many a movie goer in our current era; however, the story is the best material that the Batman franchise has ever seen. All of the actors gave performances that were serious in rolls that are often easier to make campy. These serious portrayals actually help to draw the audience into the City of Gotham and the people that fight for control of it.

I did enjoy the first film in the new series despite my burn out on the old franchise that turned into a revolving door for big name stars and low grade writers, but this installment is much stronger and much better. I'll leave it at that because I don't want to say too many things about the movie. I'd like to hear from you about your thoughts if you do see it. The movie is well worth fighting the crowds to see opening weekend. Just go early to wait in line. Lastly, the film is a strong PG-13 because of the disturbing imagery and the nature of the twisted acts of the criminals. It might be a good one to leave the little ones at home. Movie Rating: 4 1/2 out of 5. (Well worth the 9 dollar ticket price.)

Also, I'd like to send out a big happy birthday to Stephanie in Florida from everyone at Sugarless deLite. Hope you have a wonderful day!

Cake Loaves are on sale! All of our cake loaves are on sale both today and tomorrow for only $14.99 (regularly $19.99). Just ask us for the sale price.

If you're out and about at the new Sprouts opening today, look for a couple of our employees in the parking lot during the afternoon and get a couple of coupons from them for Sugarless deLite.

Not so fun plastic bag and paper bag facts:

14 plastic bags contain enough petroleum to drive a car a mile.
380 billion plastic bags or wraps are thrown away in America each year.
Making a paper bag emits 70% more global warming gases than making a plastic bag.
0 paper bags biodegrade in landfills due to a lack of oxygen.
Cities spend up to 17 cents per bag in disposal costs, wasting millions of tax dollars.
(Brought to you by 1 Bag at a Time.)

The immediate opening of interest of the Sprouts is the more important to the store, but the opening of the new Batman movie is the bigger pop culture issue today. After work Erica and I are going out to eat with my sister and brother-in-law. Then, it's off to see the new film on glorious DLP. I'm very excited about this film. Expect a report tomorrow.

Happy Birthday Wishes to Kristen Anne Bell. Ms. Bell is best known for her excellent roll as the Veronica Mars on the show by the same name. She has also branched out into film most recently staring in the movie Forgetting Sarah Marshall. She is also still active in TV with her roll on Heroes and her narrative work on Gossip Girls.

Tomorrow, the new Sprouts opens. I'm sure that they will have some good grand opening specials. I intend to go over in the morning to take a look. It will be interesting to see what they have done with the old Albertson's space. I just wish that they had put it directly behind us so that I didn't have to walk across the parking lot. Last night, those of us who were watching the summer classic got to see a lot of bonus baseball. A game that started off moving at a very brisk pace became a fifteen inning defensive gem. After 4 hours and 50 minutes, the AL once again came out on top of the NL to expand their unbeaten streak to 12 with 11 wins and 1 tie.

The commissioner's stance that the game must be decided with a win or a loss almost made for an extremely interesting situation, but Michael Young of the Texas Rangers once again provided the winning run for the AL in the bottom of the 15th with his sacrifice fly. Justin Morneau of the Minnesota Twins got his slide in just under the tag of Brain McCann of the Atlanta Braves ending the longest All-Star game in baseball's history.

It was also a game that shattered many previous records. In addition to having a Texas Ranger provide the winning run, all 4 of the Rangers present provided something to the box score. Unlike Bud, I wouldn't have minded if it had ended in a tie, but it sure was fun to watch all of the great plays.

Quiz Day: Do You Have Healthy Relationships?

You Have Very Healthy Relationships

You are an amazing friend, partner, and family member.
You always take other people's feelings into account, and you're never selfish.

Your relationships are based on mutual respect.
You respect the people you love, and you only love people who respect you in return.

Home Run Hamilton

Cone Day! Ask for the cone special and get your cones for only $2.08 (regularly $2.77).

Even people who don't follow baseball might spend a portion of the day talking about the Texas Ranger's center fielder Josh Hamilton. What he did last night in the Home Run Derby was nothing short of amazing. In short, he hit 28 homers in one round. He didn't win the trophy, Twins first baseman Justin Morneau did, but he did win the hearts of anyone who was watching. He also won the respect of all of the other players who know just how improbable his night was.

This is a power display that transcends any other derby that I've ever seen. Moreover, his story of redemption from drug abuse that has played out as the feel good story of the year has just gotten a whole new and wonderful entry. Here is a man who is finally using his God given talents and is putting on a spectacular show while he is doing it for all of us to enjoy.

Brownie Special: Buy 2 brownies for only 5 dollars (limit 4). Tell us you want the special price and get any combination of our low carb brownies, Fudge Nut Brownies, or our new Peanut Butter bars.

We're at the All-Star break in baseball. The Home Run Derby is this evening at Yankee Stadium. The All-Star game will be the last at old Yankee Stadium since the Yankees will move to their new stadium next year. It will be sad to see the old one go. It's had some wonderful history.

Of course, the mid-point in the season is where we take some time to reevaluate our picks from the start of the season. If the season ended today, I would have only picked 3 teams correctly. Rick would have picked 3 correct teams as well. Thankfully, we mix it up at the half. Here are our new picks:

My Picks:

NL East: Philadelphia
NL Central: Chicago Cubs (original pick Milwaukee)
NL West: LA Dodgers
NL Wildcard: Milwaukee (original pick San Diego)

AL East: Boston (This still pains me.)
AL Central: White Sox (original pick Cleveland)
AL West: Angels from Anaheim
AL Wildcard: NY Yankees

Rick's Picks:

NL East: Atlanta
NL Central: Cubs
NL West: Arizona (original pick San Diego)
NL Wildcard: Philadelphia

AL East: Boston
AL Central: White Sox (original pick Cleveland)
AL West: Angels
AL Wildcard: Tampa Bay (original pick Toronto)

I'm trying to finish up a game that I've been playing, but I am running into a problem that I often have in RPG's. In short, I'm a collector. I like to not only beat the game, but beat it with 100% completion. It's one of the reasons that I have so many games that I have not finished the last chapter. There sitting right on the edge of completion so that I can go back and collect all of the hidden items or skills. Thankfully, I made some pretty good progress last night.

Green Tip: Many hotels ask guests if they want fresh sheets and towels each morning. If you can make do with a change every other day, you'll save water and energy and reduce the wastewater treatment stream. In one linen reuse program, about 70% of guests participated, enabling a hundred-room hotel to reduce its monthly water usage by 48,000 gallons and its detergent usage by 320 gallons. [This tip brought to you by Page-a-Day calendars.]

July is always an interest month at the store. It will prove to be a little more interesting this month. For anyone who does not know, the new Sprouts is opening next weekend, the 18th of July. We will once again have an anchor store behind us. We're looking forward to welcoming our new neighbor. In the next month, Home Goods should open as well.

July is also the start of our Christmas planning. Our monthly meeting in July typically has Christmas at the forefront. We'll start looking at new options and little changes to the gifts that we create. After all, the sugar free market doesn't have much in the way of ready made gifts, so we put them all together here the month before Christmas. The planning, however, takes place during the summer so that we can get all of our orders put in for the packaging and the chocolates.

Our apartment community has recently switched management groups. I think that, in the long run, this will be a positive change. However, the result has been a shortage of maintenance workers on the property. Three weeks into our outstanding maintenance request, we finally got our work done today.

Three weeks of waiting for multiple maintenance requests to be finished would normally cause me to move; however, we've decided that we are willing to give the new management a chance. This decision was based in large part on the managers willingness to speak with me in person, something that the previous manager was never willing to do.

Hopefully, this will prove to be a wise choice. When it comes done to it, moving is a pain, the location is nice, and the apartment itself is not to bad for the price. Since we've decided to wait out the housing market for another year with all of the uncertainty of life, it seems like a good call to stay. So, we'll sign up for another year long tour of duty later this week.

Quiz Day: Road Trip Test

The Road Trip of Your Life

You see companionship and loyalty as what's most important in life.

You live life at a fairly leisurely pace. You take time to enjoy the sweeter parts of life, even when you're busy.

You're willing to take a few risks in life. You may not take the road no one travels, but you're happy to take the road less traveled.

You are able to find a fairly healthy balance between work and play. You work when you need to, but you never let yourself burn out.

In another life, you could have been a great artist. You trust your creative instincts enough to let them lead you.

Day Off=Errands

Sierra deLite bars are on sale today for only $2.99 (regularly $4.25).

Well, I got the day off yesterday which means that I got to run errands. But, I did get a few important things done. After a day that involved bank trips, grocery store visits, and three loads of laundry, my wife was kind enough to cook us a low-carb lasagna. As an added bonus to the excellent dinner, we've got yummy left overs for lunch for the next two days.

After running around all day, I really just felt like relaxing. I put in a video game that I was playing at the beginning of the year. The great thing about RPG's is that a good memory and a players guide can get you right back into the story line. I'm actually almost finished with Dragon Quest VIII. I figure a few more hours of game time should let me complete it. :)

Things found on the web today: In the never ending proliferation of top 25 lists on the web, here is one for the top movie scores of all time. Personally, I think that the scores for Braveheart and Glory could supplant some of the other choices.

I noticed that my hair was starting to get a little on the shaggy side last week, so I went to get it cut on Saturday. Lost in the translation was that I wanted a trim. While it was a word that I specifically used along with other detailed descriptions, the "stylist" seemed to have a different definition. As the two guard quickly shot up the side of my head, the horror story began and ended quicker than I could have ever imagined. There was no way to stop it.

After her attempts to fix my hair led only to more carnage, I simply ended the session. The result is a hair cut about which I can only say one good thing, it will grow back. In a few weeks time, I might be able to manage it again. Meanwhile, I will simply save some money on shampoo. I just wish they would listen before they go to chop.

Outside of the nightmare of the haircut, the rest of the weekend was wonderful. Thanks to Dave and Holly for hosting game day yesterday. I always love these events because there are so many games of which I have never heard. It's fun to be able to relax, learn, and play games. Thanks.

I hope that everyone had a wonderful Fourth of July. I'd like to thank everyone who came in yesterday and kept me company. It is always better to work a holiday that is busy in the store rather than extremely slow. I was also able to get a fair amount of work done on our internet sites. The great benefit for me is that I get Monday off.

We did get to go over to our friends house yesterday in Rockwall. In fact, this is going to be a weekend of time with friends. While we hung out with my fraternity brothers and their wives and girlfriends last night, we will get to hang out with our other friends on Sunday at a game day. I love to play games, so it should prove to be quite a good day.

On the way up to our friends house, I think we're going to throw in a quick shopping trip to Khol's and Linen's and Things. The later has a liquidation sale going on and we are in the hunt for some thermal black out curtains for the downstairs bedroom. The one's in the living room have been such a success both with keeping the cold out and the heat from taking over that we have decided to put some in to the room that we moved to last month in anticipation of the winter. Of course, the best way to get them is in a liquidation sale.

Open on the Fourth

Come in today and enjoy a nice refreshing yogurt in between your outdoor activities. We are open from 12 PM until 6 PM today. We also have a fresh stock of creme pies, cheesecakes, and cakes on hand if you need a last minute dessert for a cook out.

It's the Fourth of July! I'm manning the fort today at Sugarless deLite. If you find yourself in the need of a sweet sugar free treat. I'll be here.

The upside to working today is that it is a short shift. My wife and I both got to sleep in today which was nice. Additionally, I should be walking out of the store by 6:15 PM tonight. This means that we can still go to any evening festivities. Besides, slower days always allow for me to give unfinished business attention.

A Fourth of July Poem:

They all fought for the Red, White and Blue.
The white men, the black men, the Indians too.
They were all heroes, or so it is said,
When the blood flowed, it was all crimson red.
They all fought for freedom, side by side,
Some of them lived, and too many died.
They were all valiant soldiers, every man,
They gave what they had, to the last stand.
We shouldn’t forget them, not one single soul,
And we should make sure their story is told.
They fought for the freedom of every man,
Their bravery is known, across our great land.
For those up in heaven, or hell here on Earth,
We all thank our fathers, for our life since birth.
They all are our heroes, a much treasured lot,
And we should thank them for all we have got.
So raise up your hands, give thanks to a-high
For all the brave soldiers who lived and died.
As our lives go on, and in freedom we live,
We thank every soldier, for what he could give.

With the Fourth of July just around the corner, I'm sure that many of you are getting ready to move full steam ahead with your summer plans. Erica and I got our summer vacationing out of the way early to avoid the rush. I can't imagine being out on the beach on a holiday weekend. Nevertheless, it won't stop us from trying to relax and have fun this weekend.

I heard an interesting fact today on NPR in a discussion about patriotism on the Diane Rehm Show. Currently, only 1 in every 235 Americans have served or are serving in the Armed forces. It is our lowest rate in the nation's history. Less than fifty years ago, the number was 1 in 12. So, let us not forget the very few who have sacrificed and continue to sacrifice so much for our nation. They provide our very freedoms that we will celebrate tomorrow.

I ran on Monday night for the first time in about 3 months. A three month layoff does not make for a happy body. I was amazed that I was able to run so well on my first day back, but I am starting to think that I might have pushed a little to hard. My legs and feet have been rather sore since I woke up yesterday. Nevertheless, I'm going back out tonight for another run. Sitting back and complaining has never served me very well, and it is past time to get back into shape.

I've often thought that the hardest part about working out is getting started. Once your through the first month and it becomes a routine, it gets a lot easier. Unfortunately, there is always something that comes up in that first month that makes it harder. Thankfully, my wife has pledged to be supportive and is going to help me by joining me in yoga this month. It's time to get bendy again as well. After all, I there is no since in not being sore all over, and the yoga will help with the rest of the workout routine in the long run.

After all of the good buzz that we had heard about WALL*E, my wife and I decided to go see it earlier than planned. We went on Sunday afternoon and were not let down. This film is different, and different is very good. Like many Pixar films, it is great for adults as well as children. The amazing thing is how well the children in the theater reacted to it given that the first 30 minutes has very little spoken dialogue.

Despite the lack of dialogue, the film does not move slowly. The explots of WALL*E are entertaining and endering. By the time that any substinative dialogue does occure, the audience has already bought into the comunication between the robots. The prospect for the future in this film is dimmer than most, but that future also has a silver lining.

If you are looking for a fantastic film for your family this weekend or are going on a date with a loved one, I recommend this film to you. It might just be the best film that Pixar has ever made. Also, if you are a science fiction fan, you will find several gems hidden throughout WALL*E for you. Great movie magic. Movie Rating: 5 out of 5.
