Anna's Entry

Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Butter Pecan, and Raspberry Cheesecake.

Cone Day! Get your yogurt cones for only $2.08 (regularly $2.77) when you ask for the special.

We currently have the July calendar available in the store. We will post the calendar and the coupons on tomorrow's blog. Also, we will be open July 4th from 12 PM to 6 PM.

Hi,

My name is Anna Foley and this is officially my first blog for Sugarless deLite (and first blog ever honestly). I am a new employee and am presently training to learn about the morning shift.

To tell you a little bit about myself, I am currently a student at the University of Alabama. ROLL TIDE! I am home for the summer enjoying my time in the great state of Texas, taking an online Biology class, and working at Sugarless deLite.

I applied to work at the store because I am a devout former customer. My high school girl friends and I would frequent the store 3-4 times a week (sometimes maybe even more). I need to mention my two good friends, Kenzie and Lauren, who love Sugarless deLite as much as I do. We made many memories, especially our senior year in high school, meeting up at the store to buy that irresistible, amazingly low calorie frozen yogurt. After working here for the summer, I still am not tired of the yogurt and am not sure that I ever will be.

Working at the store is definitely different than being a customer. However, my experience with Sugarless deLite has remained more than positive. There is something wonderful and unique about a small business that you cannot find elsewhere. It has been great learning experience for me that I will take with me for the rest of my life.

Thanks for reading, and I hope you have a wonderful week!
Anna

Tomorrow's Special: Coke Float for $2.99 (regularly $4.62).

My wife and I finished watching the first season of Arrested Development last night. This is hands down one of the best shows ever written for television. While I was able to catch some of it on it had its first run with Fox, this is the first time that Erica has been able to see the episodes through the first season. I've got a good felling that we will start season two next week. Their is just something about the dysfunction of the Bluth family that is so entertaining to watch.

There are currently a growing number of rumors about this show making the leap to the big screen in a movie adaptation. I'm there for the opening weekend if that is the case. This would automatically become one of the most anticipated films of any season for me.

Speaking of films, the buzz on Wall*E has been nothing short of phenomenal. It has been hailed as an instant classic by several big time reviewers. My sister-in-law said that it is the best of the Pixar films by far. Perfect for adults and children, it seems that Pixar might have hit gold again. If you are looking for something to do this weekend, cool off at your local cineplex and take it a bit of movie magic. This is something that I am very much looking forward to doing next week.

The new version of Firefox came out on June 17th while we were on our vacation. When I got home from Florida, I updated our home computer. Today, I got the work computer updated. There are many wonderful new features in the newest version of the Firefox browser. In addition to being faster while using less of your computer's resources, it also has new malware protection and a new "awesome bar." If you're currently using Internet Explorer for your web browser, I would definitely recommend moving up to the world of Mozilla.

Bonus Link: This is a link to a site that a map of the world with up to date information on Firefox downloads.

Green Tip: In Canada and Europe, where the use of refillable bottles prevails, return rates exceed 90 percent. The market share for refillable bottles in the United States is still less than 4 percent of total packaged beer sales. Support this ecologically wise solution by purchasing from brewers and soft-drink bottlers who accept returns and reuse their bottles. You may also consider a little grassroots pressure: Write to companies and encourage them to return to this once-commonplace approach.

It doesn't seem like it, but we've now hit 700 blog entries. The most interesting effect of the daily blogging at work is that my personal blog sees so little attention. For the most part, this blog acts as a personal blog where I share a little about my life, but I do tend to stay away from personal viewpoints. The result is that I stay with the safer subjects such as the environment, civic issues rather than politics, and music.

Of course, the everyday business of life is the biggest entry leader. The follow-up categories are weather, sports, the environment, and baseball. While I do try to keep it mixed up, I know that I've got my favorite topics. Thankfully, I know that some people actually do read beyond the yogurt flavors and store specials. Thanks for sticking with us.

PB2 In Stock!

Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Maple Nut, and Very Berry.

Parfait Day! All parfaits are only $2.99 today when you ask for the special (regularly $3.99). Come in early to make sure you get yours.

The PB2 has finally arrived. The saga is over. If you're name is on our list, you will be called today. If you are not on the list, we will still have enough for you, so don't worry.

I checked out our new neighbor yesterday. I spent around 45 minutes shopping in the new Natural Groceries store on the NW corner of Coit and Campbell. It was an interesting store. I don't see it becoming one of my regular stops for groceries, but it does have some different offerings. If you are looking for vitamins, supplements, natural beauty care or health care options, this could be a good place to stop and take a look. They also have a good selection of various meats in their freezer such as grass feed beef, ostrich, quail, and buffalo. If you are a vegetarian or vegan, they've got some great selections for you as well.

I don't really think that either of the two new grocers will offer a one stop shopping option for me, but each of them are bringing a new niche. I certainly don't mind having more choices or higher competition. After all, competition makes the other stores in the area better.

Quiz Day: What Reptile Are You?

You Are a Lizard

You are intuitive and sensitive.
You pay close attention to your subconscious and your dreams.

You embrace your fears and the darker side of life.
It's easy for you to be detached and objective when you need to be.
You are able to let go easily. You don't get attached to much.

And considering how often you change course, people shouldn't get too attached to you.

Natural Grocers Now Open

Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Maple Nut, and Very Berry.

Cone Day! All cones are $2.08 today when you ask for the special price (regularly $2.77).

There is about to be a whole lot of activity on the four corners of land at Coit and Campbell. Two new grocery stores are opening within the next month. The first one called Natural Grocers opens today. Located on the Northwest corner, this grocery store specializes in natural and organic products at affordable prices along with a healthy selection of vitamins. I'll take my first trip over to our new neighbors after work today.

In an interesting twist that I'm sure we will see more of in the near future, Natural Grocers does not provide free bags at check out. While they do have an area where you can reclaim recycled plastic bags, they primarily encourage the use of reusable shopping bags. Thankfully, I've got one of mine with me for my first trip.

In addition to Natural Grocers, Sprouts will open next month. We will once again have an anchor store behind us. Sprouts is a grocery store that focuses on produce. While they have other options, good produce at a cheap price is their main strength. Both of these options will make shopping on my way home from work an even easier task. The amazing part it is that both of these grocers wanted to come into this market place at these locations. I'll be interested to see if both of them are still around in the next few years.

Guess Who

Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Pina Colada, and Pistachio.

Half Price Cookie Day! All cookies in the case are on sale for half price today. Just remember to ask for the special.

We've have spoken with the people at PB2 again. Our shipment is scheduled for delivery on Wednesday. Apparently, this has been quite the saga. We apologize for the delay.

I'm back. After a restful week at the beach, we've returned a little more tan and a little better rested. We spent last week relaxing on the white sands of Pensacola. Outside of a minor sunburn and a run in with a jellyfish, I had a pretty good time. Erica can attest to the fact that I'm not very good at just sitting down and lounging. The upside to this is that we have quite a seashell collection now and a prodigious amount of photos.

It is time to get back to the reality of everyday life. I've often wondered if being on a permanent vacation would be boring because it would become as routine as working everyday. I'm sure that most people would be happy to take this challenge, but I've heard from to many retirees that you eventually get bored of all your free time. I don't mind being back at work because it gives me a chance to share some vacation photos.

Eating Healthy During The Summer ?

When I go to my Weight Watchers class during the summer, it always seems that there are less people there. Dieting for the summer is not that popular. I guess that many people must think...."when the kids get back in school" or "when vacation is over, I will get back to my program". This is how many people miss their target or their weight loss goal. Sugarless deLite offers many great ways to cut the calories....year round. Try our bagels, pita, Galaxy Granola, Baja Bobs Mixer and our great yogurt and save calories without giving away taste. Eating can be fun and exciting if you choose to make it such.

Brad will be back next week with all the regular Blog features. The best to Stephanie and Tula.

Why Do Hamsters Like Garlic?

Yogurt Flavors

Butter Brickle
White Chocolate Raspberry
Vanilla
Chocolate

My daughter has a pet hamster and I asked her do you know what hamster really like to eat. She did a web search and found that garlic was on the list. We thought about it and decided that her hamster would get apples, carrots and seeds but no garlic. I use this to make a point of how we choose to eat. Many unhealthy diet include high fat and too many simple carbs that are bad for your health. As people we tend to choose foods that are too greasy or in too large of portions. Most animals that live in the wild eat OK and do not get fat. So I was thinking that if we gave Tula, the hamster, a little bit of garlic , it may be OK. I bet if it is not healthy for her she will not eat it. The same can not be said for the human race.

Todays Answer # 1 Yes !!!! Everything is sugar free and most are all natural.

Rain? What Is That All About?

Today's Flavors

White Chocolate Raspberry
Butter Brickle
Chocolate
Vanilla

What a great surprise a day of rain that brought a relief from the heat. After going over 100 degrees on Sunday, I thought we would not see rain until fall.

The Walden Farms products are all back in stock. We are expecting PB2 on Friday. The makers of PB2 has changed their shipping carton and this has delayed our order by 2 weeks. PB2 is the 75% less calories and fat peanut butter from our friend at Bell Plantation in Tiffon, Georgia. Weight Watcher love it. Low carb eaters love it. The serving size is 54 calories instead of 200. This is not a "near" peanut product but real peanut. Of course we sample it. Great taste....low calories.
Baja Bobs is one of the hottest products this summer. These are the no sugar, low carb and low/no calorie mixer. Baja Bobs mixer allow you to save hundreds of calories in your drinks. Sugarless deLite carries all flavors of the liquid mixers.

Answer Number # 1. We are open 7 days a week . Monday-Saturday 10a-8p. Sundays Noon-6p.

Monday Mayhem

Yogurt Flavors:

Chocolate
Vanilla
Marshmallow
Butterscotch

With Brad away, I will take a turn on the blog. I am Rick Merlin who with my wife own this store. Thank you for all your support over the years This August 1st we will begin our 19th year.

We never planned to be in a shopping center with so many new tenants but it appears that we are one of the longest term tenants. People ask me why have we survived and I tell them that we provide great products to a growing customer base. Sugarless deLite provides the best customer service and we sample all the time. The big box stores like Wal-Mart and Target may have the lowest price but they only carry things they can sell quickly. If a product is a slow mover, the big box store stop carrying it.

A customer stopped me at LA fitness the other day and told me that his elderly father had died. He said that his Dad greatest thrill was coming to our store and shopping for candy. His Dad would come in and buy $ 20.00 worth of hard candy and taste each flavor for perfection. Dad had fun. Sugarless deLite had a good customer. What a great thing!! People doing business with real people that know you. So next time you think about the big box stores remember the local folks who know your name and are glad you came. Thanks for the last 19 years and may we have many more serving you.

Green Tip: In its natural state, paper is off-white to brown--the color of trees! Most businesses can dispense with bleached office paper, whitened using chlorine, which makes its way into the environment and is associated with cancer, birth defects, and immune system damage. Unbleached products are available for all sorts of uses around the office: paper for copiers and printers, notepads and file folders, even toilet paper and paper towels. Happy Birthday Wishes to Malcolm John Taylor a.k.a. Malcom McDowell. Mr. McDowell is a veteran screen actor who has starred in films for the last 5 decades. He has several very well know roles. My personal favorite is his performance in A Clockwork Orange as Alex. He is also referred to as "the man who killed Captain Kirk" by trekkies everywhere. He has done voice acting for several video games.

Honorable Birthday Mentions: Tim Allen-American actor/comedian, Alexandra Elizabeth "Ally" Sheedy-American screen and stage actress, Ashley Fuller Olsen-American actress/fashion designer/twin, and Mary-Kate Olsen-American actress/fashion designer/twin.

The new broadband connection was wonderful for exactly one week. To be fair, it will probably be wonderful again when we figure our way through the issue that we are having. Some type of password agreement issue presented itself yesterday evening. I’m a bit of a newbie the whole networking with broadband game, so I’m learning as I go. Hopefully, I’ll get it figured out today.

These things always seem to crop up when you’re getting ready to go on vacation. I’m rushing to try and get all of the loose ends up here tied together before we head out to Florida on Saturday. Since I was gone for two days last weekend with the convention, it has been a little more rushed than usual. The good news is that all of the orders are pretty much finished. The products shall flow.

It’s hard to believe that there are only two days of work left for me. In a few days, my wife and I will be walking down the beach. I’m sure that the time away listening to the waves roll in will do us both some good. It should just be a nice relaxing vacation with time to talk and enjoy each others company without the everyday interfering. I’m looking forward to seeing her face as we drive into Pensacola on Sunday.

Quiz Day: The Ice Cream Personality Test

Your Ice Cream Personality:

You like to think of yourself as a fairly modest person. And it's true that you don't talk yourself up... but you're also pretty happy with who you are.

You have a wild reputation, but you're not as wild as you seem. You take risks, but only measured risks.

You are a fairly open minded person with a wide range of tastes. You are quite accepting of unusual ideas and people.

You are a natural multitasker. You feel alive when you're doing more than one thing at a time.
You are a serious and contemplative person. You definitely do your own thing in life.

Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Chocolate Peanut Butter, and Orange Vanilla.

Cone Day! All yogurt cones are on sale for only $2.08 today (regularly $2.77). Just ask us for the cone special to receive the lower price.

We are currently out of PB2. The company that produces PB2 is changing the containers that they are using. We expect them to ship again on 16th or 17th of June. We should have it back in-stock by the 20th. We did try to order well in advance; however, we had not been informed of this change on their part.

With all of the bad news that baseball has received over the last few years, it is always nice give the good guys some press time as well. Last night, Ken Griffey Jr. blasted his 600th home run into the right field stands at Dolphin Stadium. He joins Barry Bonds*, Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, Willie Mays and Sammy Sosa* on the 600 list. Unlike the previous two entries into the club, Bonds and Sosa, the specter of steroids use does not hang over Griffey.

Injuries have been a constant problem for Junior since he moved from Seattle to Cincinnati. Without the few seasons worth of games that were missed because of these, he might have been celebrating his 700th career home run last night. Either way, he still has the sweetest swing in all of baseball. Congratulations Junior!

Democracy in Action

Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Chocolate Peanut Butter, and Orange Vanilla.

Buy 10 individual caramels for only 10 dollars (regularly $1.49 each). The caramels are located near the register.

My friend and I managed to survive our brush with democracy and the state Democratic party this weekend. In the process we had a great weekend with our friends who live in Austin, and we were able to make new friends at the convention. The convention itself was a crazy mix of a market place of merchandise and ideas with a bit of support to be found for just about every cause.

The process itself was long and overly tiresome because of poor management at the local level. While the overall theme of the weekend was unity, the sentiment on the floor of the convention was anything but unified. Many on both sides of the divide chose to stay divided on hold on to lingering resentments. It will be interesting to see if the pledges of support by party leaders trickle down to the base supporters over the next five months.

The upside to the convention is that the location was Austin. In addition to having a wonderful local flavor with its unique restaurants and local haunts, Austin is the home of two of our good friends from college. I'd like to thank Ted for putting us up at his place over the weekend. Thanks to Jeff for coming out and meeting up with us on Saturday. It was good to see you both. Of course, thanks to Sharon for driving and being my partner in democracy.

Convention

Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Chocolate Peanut Butter, and Lemon.

Yogurt Special: Buy one yogurt, get one free from 6 PM to 8 PM (equal or lesser value, one per customer, excludes XL).

My friend, who is also participating in the convention, and I drove down on Thursday night to Austin. The fun part about Austin is that we both have friends from college down here. In addition to the convention, we will get to spend some time with them. Since the city is jammed with about 20,000 extra people this weekend, we are using the public transportation. Thankfully, Austin has a great bus system, and we are staying next to a stop that takes us directly to the convention.

Overall, I think that this is a wonderful experience. It has been very interesting to be this involved in the process this year. I've actually been able to put my political science degree to work. Civics can be fun. But, my email account has suffered from the unauthorized sharing of my address. I am bummed about this turn of events. I guess a new email account is a small price to pay.

Green Tip: It's best to water your lawn or garden before 8 A.M. or after 6 P.M. Doing so at midday sacrifices as much as 30 percent of your water to evaporation. Avoid watering on windy days, and break your watering into short segments. Lawns absorb water better in three ten-minute spells than in one half-hour stretch. [Brought to you by Page-a-Day calendar.]

I'm away this weekend at the Democratic State Convention, so make sure to come in and keep Rick and the gang company. If I had a laptop computer, I might have actually blogged from Austin. But, I don't. I choose to blog ahead instead. Besides, we might be a little to busy doing the work of democracy for any silliness such as blogging.

Normally I would post a birthday message here, but I didn't really see any good birthdays. If someone has one, feel free to leave a comment. Instead, I decided to go the opposite route and post famous deaths: Reverend Dr Robert Stirling, Patrick Henry, Louis-Joseph Chevrolet, Carl Gustav Jung, and Robert Francis "Bobby" Kennedy,

We got restocked on our GNU Flavor and Fiber Bars, Hallman's Bear Creek BBQ sauces, and the Galaxy Granola today.

The bagels have arrived! We've gotten in our shipment of fresh bagels, pita, and English Muffins. All varieties are on hand. Don't forget to get yours for the weekend. Just one point on Weight Watchers®. The only place in Texas were they are brought in fresh weekly.

Having DSL up at the store sure has been nice. We've actually been able to complete a download from UPS that we had been attempting to do for over two months. Things can be checked quickly. Baseball games can be followed pitch-by-pitch. Uploads are much faster, and downloads are a breeze.

The availability of easy downloads means that I will get to post one of my favorite comic strips again. Natural Selection never seemed to download correctly on dial-up. However, I checked it today. :) It downloaded right away. I know that not every one gets a good laugh out of the comics I post, but I thought this one was pretty good.

After a very long race, we finally found out who the presumptive nominee for the Democratic Party is for the 2008 presidential election. Senator Barack Obama secured enough delegates yesterday to win the nomination at the national convention in August. Senator Clinton has not yet conceded, so there might still be a little drama left in this race. But, we can probably get ready for the next 5 months of McCain v. Obama.

I've got a feeling that, much like the primary season was for the Democrats, this is going to prove to be a very long election cycle. Thankfully, we won't see to many of the ads since we don't really watch TV at our house. The newspapers might be a different story. If nothing else, it will be an interesting finish to an already amazing election cycle on both sides of the divide.

Quiz Day: What Kind of Names Do You Like?

You Like Names That Are Classic and Timeless

You prefer quality names that have stood the test of time. You don't like anything that's trendy today and outdated next year.

Names are important to you, and naming someone should not be an social experiment. You are the type most likely to name someone after a family member.

Some female names you might like: Andrea, Elizabeth, Hannah, Julia, Marie, Nicole, and Victoria

Some male names you might like: Aaron, Benjamin, Christopher, Jonathan, Matthew, Thomas, and Zachary

We're up and running now with our new DSL internet connection. Thanks to Stephen's work yesterday, we should be able to operate a wireless network within the store. It's been nice not having to wait one minute for each page to download. Although, there are a lot more ads than I normally would see.

The use of high-speed internet at work does allow us to do a little more with the blog. However, we're going to keep it at a dial-up pacing for the immediate future. I know all to well how frustrating it can be going to websites that operate far outside the reach of the technology with which you are working.

What a weekend it was. A very busy Saturday gave way to a very lazy Sunday. Saturday night, we saw the Old 97's take over the crowd at the House of Blues and put on a spectacular performance. As Pancho said in the comment left on Saturdays blog, "they tore the place down!!" I've still not seen a bad or OK performance from them. Hands down, they are one of the best live shows that you can see. Furthermore, the HOB is a venue that was built for bands like the Old 97's. And, the stuff from the new album did not disappoint.

While we ate at RJ's in the West End before the show, we went to one of my old college haunts afterwards. Erica finally got to try one of the best burgers in Dallas at Adair's. After splitting a burger and checking to make sure that I still had some of my old tags on the walls, we headed home and went to bed much later than normal. Then, we slept in much later than normal.

Lastly, I picked up Murry Hammond's new CD at the show. Murry is the bassist and back up vocalist for the Old 97's. I'm giving it its first run through today. I Don't Know Where I'm Going But I'm On My Way is in the same vain as some of the slower work that is done by the Old 97's. If you're a fan of the band, then you'll like this one as well.
