Sorry that the blog was not posted on Saturday. I was out of the store and had forgotten to pre-post the blog entry. Last week was a little crazy for me, but there was a good payoff this weekend.

The MLB season officially started last week in Japan, but I chose to wait until all of the other teams got to kick off the season to announce it. Between yesterday and today, we will see both leagues get under way. What a glorious time of year! You can bet that my baseball predictions will be posted later in the week for everyone to see.

FC Dallas also kicked off their soccer season yesterday. It was a little warmer at game time than I had expected, but it was still a pleasant day to take in a game. At just about 2 hours for a standard game, it never seems like you've been there too long. Unfortunately, the Hoops defense gave up a late goal to Chivas and the game ended in a 1-1 draw. Nevertheless, I think that FC Dallas is going to put together a pretty good year.

Green Tip: Credit card companies and banks often sell customer names and personal information to direct marketers; it's one of the reasons your mailbox is constantly stuffed with junk. Call you credit providers and tell them you don't want your information sold; it will cut down on the amount of unwanted mail you receive and toss. (Do Your Part: You can go to www.optoutprescreen.com or call the toll-free number 1.888.5OPTOUT to have the national credit bureaus remove your name from the lists they offer lenders. For any junk mail that does make it through, don't forget to recycle.) [Brought to you by Page-a-Day calendar.]

We rejoined Netflix this week, but we are trying the one movie with unlimited rentals. I figured that will net about 5 to 8 movies a month. The neat thing about this plan is that it includes unlimited streaming movies as well. It seems I now have some justification for my large monitor. I was actually able to watch a show from the couch. While I'm not 100% sure that I would want to watch a 3 hour movie this way, I didn't mind watching the TV show.

That show was Voltron: Defender of the Universe. This was one of my favorite shows of my youth. With a couple of episodes down, it's not holding up to the lofty spot that was held in my mind. But, I'm willing to spend some quality downtime giving it a chance to prove its merit. Besides, I don't think that the show really came into its own until seasons two and three.

We've got a new template for the blog. I had a wonderful template picked out yesterday, but the horizontal line that separates the store business from the rest of the stuff was not showing up on it. After about 20 minutes of searching for a solution, I opted for a different template and changed up the colors on it. I hope you like the coloration. It was inspired by my baby blue St. Louis Cardinals shirt. Let me know what you think.

The spring weather is upon us. While we might still have a cool day or two in our future, I think that we're mostly into our spring pattern. Despite what some people might believe about me, I do actually like spring time weather. The cool mornings and warmer days are nice. I just don't like the allergies and the bugs that come a long with the weather. At least you get the occasional good and rainy day out of the mix. Well, that and baseball. :)

Upon getting ready to walk out the door to work this morning, I made the horrifying discovery that my keys were not where I normally leave them. I've got two places in the apartment that I keep my keys. One place is the counter in the kitchen and the other is on the bookshelf in the living room. I realized early on that the keys would not be a quick find.

Setting in for the hard search, I went out to the car to make sure that they weren't in there. I moved on to the kitchen counters, the bathroom, the upstairs bedroom, the downstairs bedroom closet, behind the couch, behind the side table, under the desk, and so forth. I even checked my coat pockets despite the fact that I knew I didn't wear a coat yesterday.

Right at the point that I was willing to admit that I had lost my mind, I went back to give the counters one more go. There they were just a foot from the counter space where I might normally put them. Hidden underneath a shipping invoice that I had looked under once before. The moral to the story is to always fully lift stray papers or to get a really big key chain that takes up a lot more space than mine.

It's funny how much we take for granted. The little things in life that make everyday tasks easier really aren't appreciated until they are no longer there. This thought occurred to me last night as I was doing data entry on a computer with a 15 inch CRT monitor and a mouse with no wheel for scrolling. While the monitor was a bit more of a flashback than an annoyance, the mouse was just this side of slam it on the desk frustrating.

I can't really recall the last time that I worked on a computer that did not have a mouse without the ability to scroll, but I would be willing to bet that it was in the high school computer lab on the old Mac II. I don't think that the work took too much additional time because of this lacking function, but it sure was a pain. The funny thing to me is that the main part of my frustration came from the fact that I was not used to doing these things without my handy short cut.

We do become creatures of habit. When things change on us, we don't like it. Some of us don't like changes whether they are big or small. Others of us are OK with bigger changes as long as the little things remain constant. Those changes, big or small, can range on a scale from an annoyance to a major burden. The good news is that on of the great strengths that God endowed the human race with is the ability to adapt. So while some changes might seem overwhelming, we can persevere with a dose of patience, hard work, a step back, a deep breath, and a good, willing attitude.

And so, with these things in mind, I was able to overcome the lack of a wheel on the mouse and push through with some crazy data entry fun.

Puzzler Answer: The order of the books is: 546132. TI must come first, since nothing can precede it, and AR must come last, since nothing can follow it. NU must be preceded by ME, and followed by DE. That forces the order.

Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Chocolate Malt, Coffee Royal, Banana Macadamia Nut, and Peach.

Gnu Bar Case Special: Buy three cases of any varieties of the Gnu Flavor and Fiber bars (total of 48 bars) and receive a 15 dollar yogurt card in addition to the everyday case price break of $34.99.

Once again, we are running low on PB2. It seems that the orders are starting to come through on the internet as well as in the store. We should have enough to make it until our next order arrives on Thursday or Friday. But, if you need some PB2, it is a good idea to come and get it early.

Two years ago today, we made our first official post to the Sugarless deLite blog. After a couple of weeks of research at the beginning of March, we were ready to start on March 23. This date was our test run and the following was the first post. Since then, the blog has had its template changed three times, has undergone several different formate changes, has grown to include quizzes, puzzles, and comics. Additionally, we hope it has been a very helpful resource for yogurt flavors, product updates, and daily specials for our customers.

Over the last two years, we have posted 620 entries and have had nearly 15,000 hits. We've tried some things that have worked really well, and we've tried somethings that haven't worked as well. One of our most successful programs has been the 100 Days of Blogger. We will do a similar program called the Summer of Blogger in June, July, and August of this year.

Thanks to everyone who has supported us over the last two years. We look forward to many more. And thanks to everyone who has left comments or commented in the store. It is nice to know that some people read beyond the store specific items. I promise that we will be a well behaved two year old.

Puzzler: Rearrange the books so the title of any book followed by the title of the next book always makes a four-letter word.

Public Service Announcement: FDA Warning on Cantaloupes.

"People should throw away cantaloupes from a Honduran manufacturer believed to be linked to a salmonella outbreak, the government said Saturday.

The Food and Drug Administration issued the alert for the melons from Agropecuaria Montelibano. Grocers are advised to remove from their stock any cantaloupes from this company. People should check with stores to see if recently purchased cantaloupes came from Honduras."

I didn't get a chance to mention it yesterday because we were so busy during the morning, but we have added a new Friend of Sugarless D link to the blog. The Wilken Family Eye Care link is to an eye care center in Coppell, Texas. If you live over in the Carrollton, Farmers Branch, Lewisville, Addison, or Coppell area, and you are looking for an eye doctor, this is a great place to start your search. With a knowledgeable and friendly staff and two wonderful doctors, this is a place where you can go and actually enjoy your visit.

My wife and I finished Firefly last night. It was sad to see this show finish because it barely got a chance to really get started. I look forward to watching the movie Serenity which is a continuation of the story line from the TV show, but it would have been nice to have the show at least be able to finish one full season. I guess I'll have to hold out hope for another movie. Nevertheless, I don't think the odds of that are very good. :(

Yesterday was a rainy day indeed. Sometimes, the rain seems to be an echo of the day in general. The total rainfall for yesterday was 2.35 inches at DFW. It was more than enough rain to significantly raise the banks of the creek that I drive over on my way into and home from work. The water was spilling over the golf cart over pass and it had created a man made waterfall.

Quiz Day: How's Your Spelling?

I read an article a few days ago about the Mechanical Turk service offered by Amazon.com. I'm not quite sure what got into me, but I decided that, for as boring as the whole thing sounded, it was something that was worth a look. Mind you, I didn't plan on making a lot of money. However, I was interested in seeing what kind of work was involved. Was it as boring as the article said? Were there any decent paying jobs?

After two nights and about an hour and a half later, I can say that the jobs are, on average, about as boring as watching paint dry. I've made about 30 cents for my endevor. Granted, there are some higher paying HITs (read: jobs) on the site that I have not ventured a try, but these are few and far between. Most of the jobs consist of a payment of 1 to 5 cents for leaving blog comments, taking short surveys, generating questions, and identifying objects in photos. I have refused to sign up for anything that requests personal information.

While it would be sad to think that anyone might want to make a living doing this, it proved to be an interesting experience. Yes, a mind numbing time on the computer can be worthwhile if you spend the time trying to find the angles. Unfortunately, most of the angles appears to be corporations or individuals trying to pay as little as possible for the output of those who are building or improving their systems. It would be a very depressing job indeed.

Saturday night I got to see David Beckham play his first game in Dallas for the LA Galaxy. While it was a charity game that benefited UNICEF, the Frisco Miracle League and a charity of the Galaxy's choice, both team put in quite an effort that pleased the sellout crowd of over 20,000. FC Dallas looked rather sluggish in the first half, but they were bailed out by the great play of Sala, the goalkeeper. The Hoops came out strong in the second and pushed the LA Galaxy, but were not able to convert on any chances.

There were boos and cheers alike for Mr. Beckham each time he came to the corner. Thankfully, I had the same seats as last year and was a mere 20 feet from him as he took four of his patented corner shots. One was a beautiful cross that almost resulted in a goal in the early portion of the game. It was neat to see someone with that much star power on the pitch with an American team. I hope this is a sign of things to come. The game ended in a 0-0 tie; however, the show was well worthwhile. When I see the Galaxy again later this year, I must remember to bring my camera.

I knocked out another book on the TBR list the other night. I finished reading Children of God by Mary Doria Russell. This follow up book to The Sparrow is a continuation of the story of Emilio Sandoz and his journey back to the planet Rakhat. Well written, this book is a good read and follow up to the original. However, Children of God does not have the same intensity of the original and several of the twists seem forced rather than the natural course that The Sparrow carves.

Ultimately, what makes The Sparrow such a force of literary power is the moral turmoil that is experienced by both the protagonist and the antagonists. The weight of this turmoil can, at times, be crushing. In Children of God, we are asked to carry this weight again; however, it is not as real and not omnipresent. There are moments where you know that you are reading a book, rather than looking into the souls of others.

As a follow up to a truly fantastic book, it does a good job of holding its own. Nevertheless, it suffers from a comparison that is bound to be made by each reader of the original. Some of the characters seem more shallow and more like place holders or plot movers. The ending has a duality to it that, while it does not leave a bad taste in the mouth, does not leave the readers imagination running. My recommendation would be to definitely read The Sparrow, then to make the decision about whether or not you would like to continue your journey with Children of God. It is not a necessary journey to make, but it is not a bad one on which to travel either.

Green Tip: Contrary to office legend, turning off your computer when you go home at night does no harm. The good it does, according to a study from Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, is substantial-one workstation (computer and monitor) left on all night for a year is responsible for one ton of carbon dioxide emissions. Switching it off at night and setting it to sleep while idle during the day can reduce energy use by 80 percent. (If every computer and monitor in the country were off at night, we'd emit seven million less tons of carbon dioxide per year.) [Brought to you by Page-a-Day calendar.]

Rick saw an interesting article in Newsweek about Lent. Apparently, there is a new movement to reduce carbon footprints by giving up negative environmental impact items like plastic bags, electricity, and gas. It is part of a larger movement within religious organizations to promote and lead in issues of the environment.

In the news today, there is a story about the newest entry to our monetary supply. Get ready to start seeing the new, more colorful 5 dollar bill. That's right, Old Abe is getting a bit of color. It seems that the theme of this one is the color purple. And the changes will keep on coming. Next year, we will get a new version of the hundred dollar bill. I'm hoping for pink or canary yellow on this one.

Here is one final note about A Wrinkle in Time. It is a small passage that offers a brilliant metaphor. (One of these days, I will find out how to tab in Blogger so that I don't have to space everything out during conversations.)

"Kindly pay me the courtesy of listening to me." Mrs. Whatsit's voice was stern, and for a moment Calvin stopped pawing the ground like a nervous colt. "It is a very strict form of poetry, is it not?"

"Yes."

"There are fourteen lines, I believe, all in iambic pentameter. That's a very strict rhythm or meter, yes?"

"Yes." Calvin nodded.

"And each line has to end with a rigid rhyme pattern. And if the poet does not do it exactly this way, it is not a sonnet, is it?"

"No."

"But within this strict form the poet has complete freedom to say whatever he wants, doesn't he?"

"Yes." Calvin nodded again.

"So," Mrs. Whatsit said.

"So what?"

"Oh, do not be stupid, boy!" Mrs. Whatsit scolded. "You know perfectly well what I am driving at!"

"You mean you're comparing our lives to a sonnet? A strict form, but freedom within it?"

"Yes." Mrs. Whatsit said. "You're given the form, but you have to write the sonnet yourself. What you say is completely up to you."

Yesterday, my wife got me one of those thinking of you gifts because, as she said, she was to excited to wait two months to give it to me for my birthday. I'm glad she didn't. In our almost five years of knowing one another, I'm going to put this one in the top five of gifts. I might even go as high as top three. What gift could rank so high you ask? Behold, a cassette tape of Prince and the Revolution's Purple Rain album.

Prince is one of my guilty music pleasures, and I consider Purple Rain one of his best albums. This tape will certainly come in handy on vacations to Austin or trips over to Arlington. It will also be nice for times when I want to rock out to When Doves Cry. Believe me, I can and do rock out to this song. In fact, I did this on the way into work today.

I finished my first book in the TBR challenge last night. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle is a children's science fantasy book that was written in the early 1960's. I first came across this book when it was mentioned on an NPR program. When I mentioned it to friends that evening, it seemed that most of them had heard the same program. One of them was actually already borrowing the book from another friend. I am glad to have had the chance to be introduced to the book and plan on continuing the rest of the series, the Time Quintet, at a later time. I might even have to add these to our family library.(For a description of the book and the series, please follow the link above.)

Draw spokes between the hubs so each number counts the number of spokes touching that hub. Lines may not cross each other, and all hubs must connect to each other. There are three spokes drawn to get you started.

In the day and age of DVD's, one of the big bonuses is that TV shows can often find a second life. Word of mouth is always the best form of advertising. Unfortunately, very few shows are ever given a good chance to succeed on the networks before they are put out to pasture. This is the story of a show called Firefly.

If you are a fan of Joss Whedon's other TV shows, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, then you are going to enjoy theFirefly universe. If you are not familiar with his other works, he has a sharp writing style with smartly written dialogue. His characters all have flaws and are all searching for something. He also has a tendency to write strong female characters. The show Firefly, while set in space, is not your standard heavy handed science fiction. While it will satisfy science fiction and western fans alike, it also has enough of a love story to keep others following right along.

My friend Holly loaned us the series, and my wife and I are now halfway through the 14 episode show. It's clear that this show never caught its audience in time to save it. However, this is not due to the quality of the show. The concept is a little different, a space western with searching souls, and the show is greatly aided by following it from the start. While there is little that I can do to the ratings of a show while it is on the air since I am not a Nielsen rating member, I can certainly encourage people to take the time to rent the series on DVD. Consider yourself so encouraged. (Furthermore, there is a follow up movie called Serenity which is also well worth the rental.)

Why Do We Have Meteorologists?

Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Butterscotch, German Chocolate Cake, Orange Vanilla, and Lemon.

If you've stepped outside today, then you know that the weather never came to this area like they said it would. We are back on our regularly scheduled hours.

Today's Special: 50% off of the lowest marked price on the sale rack.

We did get the bagels in today. The bagels and pita have arrived! We have a fresh stock of all varieties of bagels (Blueberry, Sweet Wheat, Cinnamon, White, Onion, and Perfect 10) and both types of pita. (We did not get the English Muffins in this week.) Come in and get yours today! Great options for Weight Watchers®.

We also got in our newest items. We have two types of new BBQ sauces (Mild and Zesty & Warm and Zesty), one new hot sauce (Jalapeno), and a new grilling rub. We've got open samples of the three sauces, and I highly recommend trying any of the sauces. With five calories or less from each of the offerings, these are perfect zero point options for Weight Watchers®. Also, each one has one carb or less, so they work very well for low carb lifestyles as well.

Green Tip: Experiment with detergent to be sure you're using the right amount, as what the box calls for may be more than you need. (The scoop provided by manufacturers are also often bigger than necessary.) Your clothes won't be cleaner if you overdo it-in fact, the rinse cycle may not get all the residue out, so all you'll be doing is putting extra detergent into the water waste system. [Brought to you by Page-a-Day calendar.]

On a personal note, I would also recommend switching to a greener laundry detergent. The one that we use at home is from Costco which gives us the advantage of a bulk price and a greener detergent. Here are a couple of other sites: Seventh Generation and Ecover.

After closing the store early last night, I quickly came to discover that the weather reports were once again inaccurate. I really shouldn't be surprised at this, but I still am. I guess that we just weren't in the right part of Texas to get the 3 to 5 inches that they had predicted earlier in the day on Thursday. This is why I ignore the weather on a day to day basis.

Happy Birthday Wishes to Rachel Hannah Weisz. Ms. Weisz is an Academy Award winning actress from London, England. She won her Academy Award for the Best Supporting Actress roll in The Constant Gardener. What Weather? Ohhh....

Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Butterscotch, German Chocolate Cake, Orange Vanilla, and Lemon.

Yogurt cones are on sale today for $2.08. Just ask us for the cone special.

Due to the potential for icy weather this evening, WE WILL CLOSE AT 5:00 PM TODAY.

The rest of the LaTortilla order came in yesterday, so we are now restocked on all of the varieties of LaTortilla (Green Onion, Garlic, Wheat, Rosemary, and Tomato Basil).

The bagels DID NOT arrive today. I fully expect them to be in tomorrow. We do still have several of the flavors available in the freezer.

[I have no doubt that the talk of the day is going to be the weather around here. It looks like we are in for another batch of snow this evening. This time we might even get a little ice mixed in with the storm system. Once again, the weather the next day should prevent it from being anything substantial. This sure is shaping up to be an odd March.]

When I wrote the above paragraph, I had not seen the updated forecast for tomorrow. It looks like it might be a nasty two day stretch. I guess even Dallas has to have a true winter weather day at least once a year. We will be open this evening, but we will close early. See Above.

We did get in one case of the original wheat low carb tortillas from LaTortilla. I do expect the rest of the order to come in within the next two days.

What a wild a crazy night we had in the political election season. The Republican side got its closure last night with John McCain getting the 1,191 delegates needed to elect him as the presidential nominee for the party. The Democratic side had a crazy and late night with an assurance of more to come. It looks like the race is going to go down to the wire. I've got to say that this is by far the most interesting political race that I have seen. Political junkies love this stuff.

After staying up and watching the election results, I finished reading The Sparrow. While it is not on my TBR list, it is the first of a two book series, the second of which is on my TBR list and is called Children of God. I am looking forward to reading this book even more now that I have finished The Sparrow again. However, I am going to take a slight detour and finish off A Wrinkle in Time. This short read should provide a nice starting point for the rest of the TBR list.

Puzzler Answer: The words on the left are palindromes (spelled the same backward), but the words on the right are not palindromes.

Get Your Vote On!

Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Maple Nut, German Chocolate Cake, Pina Colada, and Lemon.

Get your cake slices buy one, get one free when you ask for the special today. (Free cake slice is of equal or lesser value. Limit two free slices.)

Double Bonus: Wear your I voted sticker, which are apparently hard to find, and ask for the "Voter Special" to get one free small yogurt.

If you are voting in the primary, today is the day. If you are voting in the Republican primary, then all you have to do is show up to your precinct polling station and vote. If you are voting as a Democrat, then you have the chance to legally vote twice. Vote today, then caucus for your candidate at your precinct polling station at 7 o'clock. Make sure to bring your proof of voting (a signed slip or stamped voter registration card). The caucus vote decides 30 percent of delegates. As a final reminder, you can vote in either the Democratic or Republican primary, but you can only vote in one or the other.

So my wife has managed to solve the problem of growing herbs at the apartment. (I was afraid to put any outside because of the kids in the apartment community.) For our anniversary, she got me two herbs that like to grow indoors which she lovingly planted all by herself. One plant is basil and the other is a lime mint. These should both make cooking a little more interesting. I also got the book Heaven which is on my TBR list for 2008. This book is huge! I'm not sure what I was thinking, but it looks like one I will enjoy.

My wife and I once again had a wonderful time in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. We had a somewhat relaxing weekend as we shopped and ate our way through the downtown and dreamed of the future. All that hiking around up and down the hillside can get pretty exhausting, but this really is just a fantastic place to go and get away from everything for a few days. Since we went on the weekend, more of the stores and restaurants were open. It was a perfect way to celebrate the close of our first year of marriage and the start of the rest of our lives together. I love you Erica.

Happy Anniversary!

Today, we have our newest and hottest selling product on sale. You can get one dollar off of each jar of PB2 (limit two) by asking for our peanut butter special. If you're still not sure about this product, just ask for a sample and you'll be won over.

I know that I had said that the calendar would be posted today. While it is available in the store, I forgot to upload it to blogger before I left for our weekend getaway. Fortunately, it will be up on Monday along with the coupons for the month of March. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

So what does a couple do for their one year anniversary? Well, we're going back to our honeymoon spot. Aside from being a wonderful town with great food and shops and trails, Eureka Springs is also a relatively short distance. At just over six hours, we were more than ready to make this trip for the weekend to relax and celebrate our one year away from the hustle and bustle of Dallas.

What does a couple get for an anniversary present for each other? For our one-year anniversary, we ended up making a purchase that will hopefully last 15–20 years. Yes, we purchased a Riccar Vacuum from Woody Mann Vacuums (located behind Sugarless deLite in the back of the shopping center between the barber shop and Firestone). In addition to the extremely helpful and knowledgeable service we received, we walked away with an amazing vacuum! It has a switch for both carpet and wood/tile floors, the suction is quite incredible, is a “lovely chocolate brown color”, and is made in the U.S.A.

Behold and be envious:

Nothing says I love you like a wonderful Made in the USA cleaning appliance.
