Last chance to get out and vote early! The polls close at 7 tonight. Cast your vote now or be left standing in line when November 4th rolls around.

Green Tip: A number of mutual funds work to promote social responsibility while still earning investors returns that are at least respectable. Choosing such a fund can enable you to support responsible firms without the time and risk of making your own investments. Do Your Part: Some funds to consider: Calvert, Domini, Green Century, and Walden. [Brought to you by Page-a-Day calendar.]

I've got my Halloween costume on today, it's not a political statement. For those who know me, they would get a kick out the shirt since I am a well known independent voter. Besides, it's a nice burnt orange color for the season and the football team.

Happy Birthday wishes to Peter Robert Jackson-director, Lawrence Joseph "Larry" Mullen, Jr.-drummer for U2, John Martin Maher-guitarist for the Smiths, Frederick Stanley "Crime Dog" McGriff-baseball player, Robert Michael "Rob" Schneider-actor/comedian, Adam Keefe Horovitz-musician for the Beastie Boys, Robert Matthew Van Winkle "Vanilla Ice"-rapper/actor, Nicholas Lou "Nick" Saban-football coach for Alabama.

After a pretty good success rate with my pre-season and half-season picks, my post-season baseball picks did not hold up as well. The Phillies finished off the World Series last night with a 4-3 victory over the Tampa Rays. Once again, the World Series was decided in 5 games. The only real drama was the weather.

I'm a big baseball fan, but this is getting rather silly. It seems that the major drama is held in the League Championship Series. The World Series almost seems decided by the time a team takes a two game lead. This isn't the way it used to be. There should be some suspense involved in the October classic.

Despite the lack of suspense, I don't believe the game deserves to be the third story in the sports line up on Channel 11 News. Getting home from dinner last night, I tuned on the local news. (This might mark the second time that I've done this over the course of the year.) I waited through the normal silly stories and got to the sports coverage only to be amazed that the two lead stories involved the Cowboys. The World Series came in as the third story and was covered for 30 seconds. Thanks for the horrible sports coverage Channel 11. (Adding insult to injury, the Dallas Morning News has the World Series bumped to page 2 today.)

At 6:45 this morning after running back and forth and doing all sorts of arm and leg exercises with a 12 pound bar for the better half of half an hour, I found myself muttering to my class mates in the back of the run that "I never thought I would say it, but I'm ready for some ab exercises."

It's as if the instructor heard me. As with the evil jinn of old, he granted my wish. Of course, he did so in a manner that made me wish that I hadn't uttered it. For the next 12 minutes, we focused on the abs with an intense strength. Nevertheless, I've gotten to the point in the workout that, while still tired, I can make it through without feeling like death. I do think, however, it might be the last time that I make a request out loud.

Quiz Day: The Cute Monster Test!

What Your Cute Monster Says About You

You are a deep, thoughtful, down to earth person. You don't put much stock in appearances.
You are never superficial or flippant. You take time in life to study, learn, and get to know people well.

You inner demon is laziness. You can get so caught up in your own world that you neglect everything around you.
People think you're cute because you're intelligent. Your wit and wisdom are charming.

Well, history was made last night in Philadelphia. It was, unfortunately, the type of history that no one in Major League Baseball wanted to make. For the first time in World Series history, a game was suspended. The weather forecast today doesn't do MLB any favors either since it is set to rain for most of the day. So, we're left with a 2-2 game in the bottom of the sixth to be continued at some point in the future. If the Rays make a comeback, we might be able to watch the World Series on a split screen as the election results roll in on November 4th.

I finally got around to using my Kiva.org gift certificate last night. Last Christmas, Erica was kind enough to get me a 25 dollar gift certificate to Kiva.org which is a site that allows people to make micro-loans to other people around the world who are starting businesses. It is a really cool charity site. However, you get the loan paid back over time. So, you can reinvest the loan when it has been repaid.

I was happy to match the original 25 dollar gift so our combined gift put 50 dollars towards the purchase of a buffalo for a family in Pakistan. Erica was also kind enough to add a 5 dollar pledge to Kiva.org itself. I was pleased to see when I went to the link this morning that the loan goal had been met. If you are looking for a good charity, I recommend this one.

Irony: Ted Stevens, a Senator from Alaska, was convicted of a felony yesterday. He has vowed to continue his re-election campaign. Unfortunately for him, he is now ineligible to vote for himself because Alaska does not allow convicted felons to vote until after their sentence is completely served.

The Phillies have taken a 3 to 1 lead in the World Series that it seems no one is watching. I figured that this would be one of the lower rated series, but the ratings thus far have been even lower than I expected. I'm hoping that the Rays have some magic still left in them and can stretch the series out for a few more games. I'd hate to see another series decided in 5.

One thing that people, at least tweens, were watching this weekend was High School Musical 3. The film grossed 42 million dollars in the domestic box office and became the highest grossing opening for a musical on the big screen. It also pulled in a cool 40 million over seas as well. Not a bad weekend for a franchise that started with a little movie on the Disney channel.

No PFT

Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, German Chocolate Cake, Roasted Almond, Boysenberry, and Banana Cheesecake.

Yogurt Special! Buy one, get one free from 6 PM to 8 PM (limit one per customer, excludes XL).

Well, my mental build-up in preparation of the PFT was all for not. Apparently, the test is only given on the first and last (fourth) week of the program. So, I didn't get to test myself against my previous times. Since I should should be able to score even better with the longer prep time, I will have to readjust the numbers that I put forth yesterday.

The upside is that I was able to focus on my one mile run time. This daily ritual at the boot camp fitness program has seen a steady drop in time. My first run came in at 10:47. Then I dropped to scores or 9:48, 9:15, 8:46 and got to 8:31 today. I'm hoping to turn in a sub 8 minute mile by the end of the the first four weeks.

Unfortunately, the rest of the morning involved a wonderful spread of lunges and ab exercises. I think that I would have rather done a testing cycle. The early morning Saturday ab routine is not quite my thing. On the other hand, everything else we do isn't really my thing either. So, I guess it doesn't matter too much what we're doing in that regard.

Green Tip: "Cradle-to-cradle" is a design paradigm that keeps products out of the landfill permanently. It's great to buy furniture made of recycled materials, but in some ways it's even better to buy furniture that can be recycled. The Celle work chair from Herman Miller, for example, is made up of 99 percent recyclable materials, and can be disassembled in less than five minutes.

Do Your Part: At www.hermanmiller.com and www.steelcase.com, check out two furniture manufacturers who have embraced the cradle-to-cradle idea in much of their office furniture.

I managed to survive the Thursday night workout session. I think that I am starting to get a little more use to them. They are still hard and exhausting, but I don't constantly feel near death. I'm taking today off in preparation for tomorrow's PFT. Here are the goals that I have set for myself for tomorrow:

2 Mile Run: 19:59 (sub-20)
2 Minute Sit-Up: 50
2 Minute Push-Up: 33

I honestly think that I can do better than the goal on the sit-ups. I might actually be able to do a little bit more on the push-ups also, but I want to make sure that I have goals that I can reach. The 2 mile run is going to be the toughest part, but this should be a good number. From this week forward, I'm going to try and take 30 seconds off each week until I get to 17:00.

Happy Birthday Wishes to Wayne Mark Rooney. Mr. Rooney plays football for a little club called Manchester United and is regarded as one of the best football players in the world. He has been in the professional level of the sport since the age of 16. He is also currently on the English squad for international play.

May I Have Another?

Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, German Chocolate Cake, Roasted Almond, Boysenberry, and Vanilla Malt.

Cone Day! All yogurt cones are only $2.08 today (regularly $2.77).

Bagels have arrived! We have all varieties on hand (Blueberry, Sweet Wheat, Cinnamon, White, and Onion) as well as the pita and English Muffins. Get your fresh breads today.

We've also gotten in our shipment of Walden Farms. We now have all of the flavors back in stock. We have also gotten in their new Mayo product. We will test this one to see if we are going to continue to carry it.

One of the cool things about the boot camp workout program that I'm doing this month is that, while you sign up for three times a week, you can go to any additional sessions that you want to during the week. Since they have a Tuesday and Thursday class, I'm going to try throwing in an extra day this week by attending this evenings class. After five sessions of workouts, I'm starting to hurt less and feel a little better, so I figure it's time to step it up. If I'm dead tomorrow, you'll know why.

Meanwhile, the store is starting to get all of its shipments in for the holiday season. Within a few weeks, you'll once again see Sugarless deLite dressed for the holidays. Our bakery will be gearing up for its usual barrage of orders for the Thanksgiving holiday, and our workers will be busy like the elves themselves preparing all of the Christmas assortments. It's a good thing that the weather is starting to catch up with the calendar.

This is what baseball fans live for throughout the year, but I have a feeling that, sadly, most of them won't be watching. The Rays and the Phillies match up tonight in Florida for game one of what just might be one of the lowest rated World Series matches of all time. This is most unfortunate.

I have to say that I personally find this match-up most intriguing. Two teams that weren't supposed to make it did, and they did so convincingly. The luster might be gone without the perennial powers (Yankees or Boston) or the old time favorites (Cardinals, Cubs, Dodgers), but the chance to see the worst team in baseball over the last 100 years, the Phillies, and the worst team in baseball since they came into the league a decade ago, the Rays, has a certain appeal to me. Personally, I'm rooting for the young guys in Florida.

I do hope that this is a good 6 or 7 game series. The four and five game matches don't mean as much. As a fan of the sport, you want to see a slug fest. That's part of the reason why the ALCS has been so great over the last five or so years for the most part. However, the World Series has not been. Even when my Cardinals won it back in 2006, it only went to 5 games in what should have been a 6 or 7 game series. (Jayson Stark of ESPN has a great article about this today.) My personal prediction, mixed in with wishful thinking, has the Rays winning it in 6.

Quiz Day: Should You Be Allowed to Vote?

You Should Be Allowed to Vote

You got 15/15 questions correct.
Generally speaking, you're very well informed.

If you vote this election, you'll know exactly who (and what) you'll be voting for.
You're likely to have strong opinions, and you have the facts to back them up.

Also, India successfully launched their first mission to the moon today. Jury Duty

Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Butter Pecan, Roasted Almond, Boysenberry, and Vanilla Malt.

Shake Day! All shakes are $3.69 today (regularly $3.93-$4.62).

We'll, if you don't see me today, it's because I've got my civic duty. I'm on stand-by today for jury duty. The worst part about it is that it is Dallas County. I've never actually been on a jury, and I think that it would be interesting to do so, but it never seems to be a good time. I guess that's why it's called our civic duty and not a pleasurable duty.

I guess the election time is a good time as any to be reminded that our citizenship goes well beyond our casting of a vote. As a good citizen, I'm ready to perform my duty. I have a feeling though that if I am picked to go down town, that I will not be picked for the jury itself. There in lies the rub of jury duty, it would be so much nicer if you knew that you had to do it without all of the maybes that exist in the current system.

Just in case I am chosen and thrown into the jury pool, I do have a nice big book to read. I figure that I should be able to get 40 or 50 pages knocked out by the time the lawyers set in on me. It's normally at this point that I get dismissed. Something about my libertarian views make most prosecutors unwilling to have me serve on their juries.

As always, don't vote uninformed: League of Women Voters Guide (PDF)

This post marks the 800 blog for Sugarless deLite. Of these, I am pretty sure I am guilty of writing around 775 or more. It's been a fun exercise, but, as I've noted before, it has made my other blog suffer considerably. One day I might show it more love. Until then, I'll just keep pounding them out for the old Sugarless D.

800 finds us awaking to a day where the Tampa Bay Rays have clinched the AL Pennant. I'm particularly proud of this young team. Not only did they have a fantastic season to finish atop the toughest division in baseball, but they also went into a slug fest with the mighty Boston Red Sox to win the Pennant in 7 games. Showing a cool and calm beyond their years, the Rays went out and beat the much more experienced team when no one would have blamed them for folding. Take that Red Sox Nation!

The other sports news that broke yesterday was the first BCS rankings. It wasn't surprising to see Texas at the number one slot after they demolished Mizzou in their prime time game on Saturday night. Nevertheless, the first ranking never maters. It is the last ranking where you need to be number one. Texas has perhaps the hardest schedule remaining with games against Texas Tech and Oklahoma State University who are both in the top 10.

After years of having to hear that the SEC is so much better than the Big 12 because it was true, I don't have to suffer that argument anymore. The Big 12 has shown itself to be just as good as the SEC this year. The Big 12 South is particularly strong and holds for of the top 10 teams in the nation. While a lot can change as these teams play each other over the rest of the year, I think even the hard core SEC fan has to pay some respect to what the Big 12 is doing this year.

In other football (soccer) news, FC Dallas was eliminated from the playoffs on Saturday with a loss to Real Salt Lake. The Hoops played with only 10 on the field for the last 60 minutes of the game thanks to Marcelo Saragosa collecting his second yellow card in the 30 minute. While they tried to put up a valiant fight, FC Dallas was over come by the relentless attack on their goal by RSL. On the up side, we were able to collect a free T-shirt from FC Dallas at the official watching party. I came for the win and all I got was this lousy T-shirt. Oh well!

P.S. If you took the time to read all of this entry, you're a champ. It kind of got away from me and ended up a bit on the lengthy side. Hopefully, you will at least find the voting information useful.

So day three of the boot camp physical training saw us all taking our first crack at the Army Physical Fitness Test. Apparently, the instructors are all former Army and hold this test in the highest regard. Of course, the test is more or less the same from branch to branch. Here are my first week results :

2 Minute Mile: 20:59 (Score 17)
2 Minute Push-ups: 30 Count (Score 50)
2 Minute Sit-ups: 45 Count (Score 60)

(A score of 60 is the minimal passing score.)

I was a little bummed about my count in the sit-up category. I did them last night and got to 56. I think that, from now on, I'll take the Friday before off from any workout activities. Other than the lower count in the one category, I was fairly happy with my results. I would have liked to have come in below 20 for the two minute mile, but I'll shot for that next week. The good thing is that I now have my bench marks.

The one thing that does give me a chuckle at each workout session, albeit a evil chuckle, is that there is no reward for finishing ahead of the pack on the runs. The reward for finishing early is a combination of sit-ups, crunches and other instruments of pain in pyramid form. 30 in a row of one exercise followed by 30 of another exercise followed by 20/20 and then by 10/10. If everyone is still not done, they come up with more for you to do.

Since I've fallen into the lower 40 or 30 percentile on the runs so far, it has not been to bad. Nevertheless, I'll improve my score over the next few weeks and start sharing in more the fun. Believe me, I'm not necessarily looking forward to it. But, I am looking forward to better times and better scores.

Green Tip: Ask your mechanic about special tires with low rolling resistance to substantially improve your gas mileage. Auto makers put them on many cars as original equipment because the tires help them meet CAFE mileage standards. Find information (including a product list) at www.greenseal.org.

On a Ford Focus, fuel-saving tires can cut gas consumption a cool two miles per gallon. In California alone, a statewide switch would amount to an annual gas savings of 308 million gallons. [This fact brought to you by Page-a-Day calendars.]

Last night, Senator McCain and Senator Obama took part in the 63rd annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner. If politics consisted of more of this and less of the negative ads that permeate the airwaves, people would probably have a better time during the election cycle. Enjoy some political humor!

If I know one thing certain about the debate last night, it is that Joe is the new everyman. I came into the debate about 40 minutes into it and heard a confusing exchange about this average Joe. Humorous as it was, the debate did not survive past my drive home. Fifteen minutes of back-and-forth after the previous 6 weeks of back-and-forth was too much even for this poly sci geek. My only unanswered question of the night was whether or not Joe watched the whole thing.

After a day of rain and mostly muggy weather yesterday, it was nice to walk out to cooler temperatures after closing last night. It was a wonderful 56 degrees this morning when I got out at 6 AM. The weather has definitely hit a good pattern for me. I'm looking forward to the next week with the cool evenings. Hopefully, this weather pattern will hold for another week or so after this stretch so that we can have nice weather in Eureka Springs at the beginning of November.

I signed up for a morning boot camp physical fitness program this month. It meets three times a week, but you can add more days if you wish. After the first two meetings, I find myself saying, "What was I thinking?" Waking up at 5:15 AM to go get my butt whipped for an hour is not my idea of fun.

Nevertheless, the second day did go better than the first. That doesn't mean that it was easier by any token. The program is non-stop. From the moment we start, we are in constant action. Running, lifting, running, crunching, lifting, running, and so on until after forty minutes you are ready to be done. The only problem is that there is still another 20 minutes to go.

I'll be interested to see how I feel after the first week. I know that after the first day, I felt horrible. Yesterday, I was sore for the entire day. When I awoke this morning, my body didn't want to go. Showing up to the workout site, however, the motivation kicked in and I tried my best. This might be a good thing after all.

Quiz Day: What Color Day Are You Having?

You Are Having a Blue Day

Today is the kind of day that challenges you to the core. You're going to have to stay cool. You have the intelligence, skills, and drive to rise to the occasion. Your mind is sharp.

While things may be a bit chaotic, you are still taking the time to reflect and be calm.
Today you are extra attractive and interesting to people. You are giving off a detached vibe, which is very intriguing.

The weather has been rather nice this month. With highs in the upper-80's to mid-80's for most of the start of it, October has been pleasant. We are supposed to have a minor cool front come through this evening which will see the high temperatures for the next few days top out in the upper-70's. Now were starting to talk about my type of fall weather. My favorite time during both the fall and the spring is when the day time temps are in the mid-70's and the evening temps are in the lower-50's. :)

The election is just a few weeks away now. Early voting starts next Monday for all of Texas. I will post on Monday's blog the information that you will need to partake in the early voting process for Dallas, Collin, Denton, and Tarrant Counties. Just in case you are looking to avoid the long lines on election day. Or, if you are avoiding election day all together by going out of town like my wife and I.

If you're still undecided, here is a good place to start finding out about the candidates:

League of Women Voters

Don't forget to check out the other candidates as well. While it is still possible to do a straight ticket vote by choosing one of the three major parties, it might be worthwhile to find out if the candidates actually stand for what you believe in before just checking this option.

It ended up be a very busy weekend with all the driving, but it was a wonderful wedding. The outdoor service up against the Riverwalk provided a great setting with the exception of the brief intrusion of the helicopters during the exchange of the vows. The reception featured a fantastic dinner spread and a lot of funny dancing complements of the groom's men.

I guess the most important thing about the weekend is that the wedding went well, but coming in a close second would have to be the Texas victory over Oklahoma. In a rare turn of events, I actually got to watch most of the game. Unfortunately, I did have to miss the fourth quarter. Of course, the game was one of the hot topics at the wedding.

Outside of the football world, the baseball postseason got a little more interesting as well. With the Rays winning the marathon game 2 and the Dodgers picking up a win in game three, both series seem like they might have some life to them. I'm looking forward to getting to catch a little bit more of the NLCS this week. I just wish that they would play the ALCS on broadcast television.

Yogurt Special! Buy one yogurt, get one free from 6 PM to 8 PM. (Limit one free yogurt per customer. Excludes XL.)

About the time that this blog is posted, I'll be getting ready to get ready for a wedding in San Antonio. That is, I will be watching TV as my wife and her sister start to get ready. Getting dressed to the 9's thankfully only adds 20 minutes to my usual routine. Since I am not in the wedding, I will be spared the tuxedo and will only have to ware my usual black suite. This will save about 5 minutes off the 9's time.

Since my wife is in the wedding party, she and her sister will leave to join them about 2 to three hours before the wedding. This leaves me with plenty of time to kill before the wedding and a nice suit to do it in. I'm not really sure what to do with myself. I'm kind of hoping to sneak in some college football at the hotel bar as long as there is no smoking.

For everyone else who is out there thinking about watching some football today, all I have to say is go Texas. Longhorns!!!

Green Tip: Phosphates in laundry detergents can easily find their way into waterways, where they promote algae growth. This flourishing plant life consumes the oxygen in the water, leaving none for other plants and animal life. Look for phosphate-free detergents and dishwater soaps. (Both Costco and Sam's carry great options.) [Brought to you by Page-a-Day calendar.]

Happy Birthday Wishes to David Lee Roth. Diamond Dave is 54 today. The lead-singer, ex-lead-singer, lead-singer again of Van Halen has had a successful career both with and without the band. Personally, I was always a bigger fan of Van Halen with DLR.

I'm by nature a night person. Although I've been trying to change that for the last few months, I haven't had much success. Nevertheless, I can actually wake up early when I need to do so. I can also get some things done in the morning as well since the store doesn't open until 10 AM.

I had to get up early this morning to take some friends to the airport. The upside to it is that I was able to get a few things taken care of on the phone on the way into work. I've now got the most of our November vacation arranged. While I'll be away from the store this weekend for a wedding, I don't think that either Erica or I am looking at this as a vacation weekend. In November, we'll take the first five days to get away before the holiday crunch.

Ah the To Be Read list, long set aside but never forgotten. After a few months of time set aside for other endeavors, I returned to the long neglected list and picked up Ilium last week. It took a little bit of time to get into the book which is written as "literary science fiction", a different breed than my normal science fiction read. However, last night proved to be a turning point where I found myself engrossed in the novel.

Plowing through the last 240 pages of the novel, I found myself interested in seeing how this odd collection of characters and literary works all came together. Unfortunately, the novel is only the first in a two part series. So, I find myself with almost 700 more pages to complete to finish this tell. Of course, my friend who loaned me the first book was kind enough to loan me the second one as well. Alas, this might set me back a little with my other books on the TBR list which currently sits at three down and nine to go. It looks like I will have to have a very busy three months of reading to get this list finished.

Enough about books and educated writers, the baseball post season rolls on with all of the teams now set for the League Championship Series. I'll finally be able to watch some of the games on TV now. Here are the match-ups with our picks to the side:

National League Championship Series:

Phillies vs. Dodgers (Brad: Dodgers in 6, Rick: Phillies in 6)

American League Championship Series:

Rays vs. Red Sox (Brad: Rays in 7, Rick: Red Sox in 5)

We had a good time yesterday at the shower for Matt and Tiff. The cake that we got from the store was great. I'll make sure to post a photo or two later in the week. Given that both of the parents to be are giant Radiohead fans, the cake went over very well. I believe that it was even greeted by a tear of joy by the mother to be.

The spread was fantastic and the games were fun, but by the end of the day, I had run out of steam. I wasn't quite feeling right when we got home, and I turned in with Erica at 8 o'clock. If I willing go to be before 10 PM, you know something is wrong. Thankfully, I knocked out over 12 hours of sleep and am back to normal again today. When I can catch an upcoming illness right at the beginning, I can usually sleep it off.

The weather is providing a literal continuation of the shower theme today with periodic heavy rains. The ten day forecast shows us with several more chances for rain and a significantly cooler over all temperature. Fall looks like it is starting to play catch up.

Weekend Craziness

Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Toffee Coffee, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Pina Colada, and New York Cheesecake.

Gnu Bar Special! Buy 3 cases (48 bars) of Gnu Flavor and Fiber bars and get a free 15 dollar yogurt card.

There is a new sale rack in the store. We have moved the sale items over to the white bookcase along the wall next to the candy bowls. We have our usual assortment of sugar free goodies. Also, we have several items with sugar. These are items that companies have erroneously sent use over the last few months. We have clearly marked them as containing sugar.

Most weekends seem busy when you only have one day off. Some weekends are busier than others. This one will be one of those. When I get home this evening, we get to bake some cookies. Then, we've got dinner with our friends this evening in Frisco at Christina's Restaurant.

In the morning, we've got church followed by a cake pick-up at the store, a small shopping trip at the grocery store, and then a baby shower (hence the cookies). The shower should be good fun as it will be both the men folk and women folk all coming together to celebrate the upcoming baby for Matt and Tiff. Some of our longer term customers will remember Matt as the former manager. You might also remember Tiff as one of our short term employees.

If we're not exhausted by that point, we might even try to throw in an episode or two of Doctor Who. We're on the last two discs of season three. I'm looking forward to the end because I since a big build up coming. It should be good. Luckily, the season four comes out next month.

Free Candy Day! What is free candy day? If you come in the store today, we will give you a small candy bag of Peanut Butter bars on the house. This is a great chance to try one of our most popular candies in the store.

Green Tip: Keeping your car washed and waxed improves its aerodynamic profile, enabling you to knife through the air a little more efficiently. In one test involving a 1,600-mile road trip, this single expedient resulted in a 7 percent fuel economy improvement. (If you want to do even more, make sure that you tires are properly inflated and that your air filters are cleaned.)[This fact brought to you by Page-a-Day calendars.]

The great thing about playoff baseball is that it never seems to go as scripted. The Cubs, which were one of the favorites from the start of the season, find themselves down two games to none against the Dodgers. Playing so poorly that they got booed out of Wrigley Field, the Cubs will go on the road and try and keep themselves from being eliminated.

The Rays saw their break-out rookie, Evan Longoria, smash two home runs in his playoff debut and lead them to victory over the other team form Chicago. The Rays are quite possibly the most exciting team in the playoffs with their combination of talent and youthful exuberance.

Happy Birthday Wishes to Lindsey Adams Buckingham. Mr. Buckingham is guitarist and singer for Fleetwood Mac. This is one of the classic rock bands of the 1970's and one of my personal favorites. They are currently working on an album for release next year.

Apparently, I forgot to post the link to yesterday's quiz. I have gone back and corrected that for any one who wishes to take it and find out the state in which they should live.

I've got two election notices today. The first is that the Vice Presidential debate will take place this evening. It is the only debate that will take place between the two candidates. The second is that the deadline to register to vote is October the 6th for all residents of Texas. If you have not already registered, then you can find out how by going to this link. (Also, you can check to make sure that you are registered by going to the link above.)

Now, it is playoff time. The White Sox made it in after a great game against the Twins last night. They will move on to Tampa to face the Rays, a team that recorded the first winning record in franchise history this year along with their first trip to the playoffs. Of course, the start of the playoffs means that it is time to review the picks that Rick and I made at the start and half-way point of the season. The first number is the actual number of correct picks for the divisions and wild card. The number in parentheses is the number of correct teams in the playoffs regardless of division/wild card position.

Start of the Season Picks Correct:

Rick- NL- 1 (2), AL-1 (2)
Brad- NL- 2 (3), AL-1 (2)

Half-way Picks Correct:

Rick: NL-1 (2), AL-2 (3)
Brad: NL-4 (4), AL-2 (3)

The other thing that we like to do at the end of the regular season is give our picks for the divisional playoffs. I'll post mine today and Rick's tomorrow. We'll use the number of games as a tie breaker.

National League Divisional Series:

Cubs vs. Dodgers: Cubs in 4
Phillies vs. Brewers: Phillies in 5

American League Divisional Series:

Rays vs. White Sox: Rays in 5
Angels vs. Red Soxs: Angels in 4

I think that it is going to be another great year for playoff baseball. The combination of the Cubs and Dodgers in the first round along with the Rays turn from worst to first give a couple of great story lines to follow. Both the Cubs and the Rays would make a fantastic World Series, but if just one of those two teams gets in, the their will still be a lot of interest. Personally, I think the Cubs have the best shot since the Rays would have to make it through either the Angels or the Red Sox. And if the Cubs won it all? I guess one World Series ever hundred years isn't to shabby.
