I'm too old for this...

Last night, I took a break from the project that I was working on at home to go watch my fraternity play broomball for rush. I went fully intending only to watch and talk to some of the guys. Of course some of the guys talked me into playing a round. I should have stuck to my guns. After going all out for the full round, I came to the conclusion that there are some things better left to the actives. It's not like I'm old by most standards, but in the words of Dr. Jones, "It's not the years, it's the mileage." I do believe that will be the last time that I am goaded into playing that sport. The next time one of the members makes an old man comment, I'll just smile and nod knowing that the next day, my knee won't be killing me. The hardest part about growing up is admitting that you are a grown up. The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Toffee Coffee, Toffee Nut, Peach and Very Berry. You Can Win For Losing

Image
Ah trivia night, how I hate and love thee. I'm what you might call a competitive person. As such, I hate losing. But, with few exceptions, no matter how many times I lose, I will get back up and try again until I win. This is the draw of trivia night at the Flying Saucer...I want to win. Last night my friends and I, in a dramatically reduced number for our team, managed to turn in our worst showing yet. Ironically, we won a 10 dollar gift certificate in the process for sticking it out. When I told the moderator that we had a horrible evening, he responded, "It wasn't horrible. It just really wasn't good." Thanks. I eventually want to win because of our knowledge and skill; however, I'll take the charity in the meantime. Now, if only they would include a science and history section to all of the pop culture... I would just like to say that yesterday's weather was a thing of beauty. I cannot remember the last time that there was an August day that felt like

Go Fish

Last night I had some friends over for dinner/Prison Break/anime. One of the things that I love to do is cook. We had parmesan crusted cod with zucchini and red pepper with a side of mashed cauliflower. It was the first time that I have tried the recipe and I thought it worked out fairly well. I'm glad that I made a few adjustments to it though as the original recipe seemed to lack some flare. After everyone had left and the dishes were cleaned (cooking for five will cause them to pile up quickly), I sat down and watched the US Open match for the Andre Agassi farewell tour. After he wins or losses in this tournament, he is retiring from professional tennis. It will be interesting to see one of the most dynamic tennis personalities of my generation leave the game. His victory last night against Romania's Andrei Pavel was a classic duel that saw Agassi rally from being down 0-4 in the third set. The match ended 6-7 (4), 7-6 (8), 7-6 (6), 6-2. If you get a chance to see his next m

Not Much Here

This weekend, I moved two of my good friends, who are thankfully married, back into town. It was the first time in around eight years that I have had to move a piano. The good news is that the apartment was on the first floor. The best part about a move that is not your own is not having to set up. The furniture and boxes are easy, but finding room for everything is the hard part. After mopping around all day on Sunday and watching the Cardinals grand slam walk off victory over the Cubs :), I finished a project that I had started last Wednesday. Since I have company coming over tonight, I thought it would be nice to not have 400 plus CD's lying around the apartment. Five hours later at 3 in the morning, I finished this project and have two wonderfully organized binders of CD's. Right, I might have gone a little OCD on the organization part. But, I did find three CD's that I had misplaced including one that was given to me, one that I had just bought a replacement copy for l

Why I Hold On

It's been a little while since I last posted about yoga class. Yes, I am still participating in class and next month will be the sixth month. This evening I came to a realization about a previous question that I had posted here back in April when I started about why people would ever want to exercise. I struggled greatly in class last evening because my body has been sore from lack of sleep, moves, bad seating at my computer desk and the like. Almost every pose was painful. In the mist of the pain, I had a moment of clarity that allowed me to see that the joy of yoga or exercise is not on the days when we find it easy; rather, the days when it is the hardest and we continue on through the pain to find ourselves with renewed energy at the end. In the middle of a pose that is stretching every part of your body, it is hard to see the end, but when the instructor calls "Relieve," the tension and pain gives way to a relaxation and rejuvenation. This Thing Still Works?

I was transporting some work from home to the store today on an old 3 ½ inch floppy when I realized that this was not only old technology, but an old floppy disc. The disc is entitled Warlords II. It originally carried a game by that name and was given to me by my best friend from Jr. High. That makes this particular floppy disc thirteen years old. I guess I should upgrade and move to flash drives, but my only working computer at home is so old that it doesn’t support this technology. Of course it does have a word processor and it does run Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri game so it really accomplishes almost everything I could ask for out of a computer. One day… The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, German Chocolate Cake (going fast-changing this afternoon), Maple Nut, Banana and Boysenberry. Some times I get distracted when writing the blog and I forget to mention everything. Yesterday, our Peerless candy shipment included four new varieties: Honeydew, Peach, Pina C

A Little Birdie

I'm not a bird person. I'm not really much of an animal person as far as pets go. I tend to enjoy other peoples pets. I appreciate animals in their natural environment for their beauty and the roll that they each have in the environment. Nevertheless, when there is a bird that starts chirping right outside my window around 12 o'clock every night and continues to do so until four in the morning, I cry fowl at nature. It is just another reason to look forward to the autumn season. Speaking of seasons, what was with that liquid stuff that came out of the sky last night? I must have gotten about 20 to 30 minutes worth of good rain last night. The sky opened up and it was nice. I was thankful to have the covered parking as the rain began right when I got home. Maybe, we will get a little more of the same today. The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, German Chocolate Cake, Maple Nut, Banana and Boysenberry. Mars Investigations

Image
For the second week in a row, my friends and I went to the Flying Saucer in Addison to participate in their Tuesday night trivia. This week was not nearly as kind as last week was. We did not even manage to get a tie for any of the rounds. Worst of all, I know that we missed at least 5 questions because we changed our answers. Oh well, there is always next week. Any takers? The coolest part about the evening was yet again seeing a friend that I have not seen for at least 6 years. Chance meetings rock! The coolest thing about randomly meeting someone you know is when she or he also recalls your name. It's not as awkward and it is always nice to know that you are remembered. It's also nice when they smile.  Veronica Mars Season 2 came out on DVD yesterday. It was a week earlier than I originally thought, but that didn't stop me from running out to get it. If you haven't seen this show, it is the best one on TV. Yes, it is better than Prison Break and Desperate Housewives

Boston Massacre Part Two

Image
You may have gathered in your reading of this blog that I am a little bit of a sports fan and a whole lot of a baseball fan. Given the length of the season, I have tried to spare our non-sports fans the agony of a daily or weekly update of what is happening in Major League Baseball. Nevertheless, as an unabashed New York Yankees fan I would be remise if I did not point out the great five game sweep that took place in Boston this weekend. I know of only myself and one other person that was happy with this weekend, but we were very happy. :) Of course, I have the utmost respect for the Boston Red Sox so I don't think this season is over; however, it was a fantastic weekend for baseball...assuming you're a Yankees fan. The Prison Break season premier was excellent. It seemed to pass by in 30 minutes instead of the hour long show that it is. I am looking forward to another superb season. I am glad that I was able to watch all of the previous season, but it is not necessary. If you’

Over Dressed x 2

This weekend I went back to my old church. One of the growing trends in society today is the move towards casual dress. This permeates the dinning crowd, sporting events, movie theaters and churches. People simply no longer dress up to go out. I was raised a little on the traditional side and still like to dress for Sunday mornings. I had my suit laid out the evening before. Needless to say since I woke up late and went to the contemporary service, I was the only one in a suit. This suit must be a curse because later in the evening, I went to my fraternity's first chapter meeting of the new school year. Traditionally speaking, this is formal meeting. Apparently, it wasn't this evening. But given my standard wardrobe, it was fun to step out and wear a suit. Besides, I think that I wear a suit quite well. It could be a case of better over dressed than under, but next time I think that I'll try and dress a little closer to the general populace. The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate De

R&R

Friday night might equal high school football for most people in Texas this time of year, but my friends and I march to the beat of a slightly different drummer. For us, Friday is yoga time. The last few weeks, I've had a lot happening so my attendance has been one off and one on from week to week. I hope that this is a return to the weekly event. It's nice to be able to shut down for and hour and stretch out after a long week. Now, if we can just find a way to get the karate class to move away from the next room? After going out every night for the last week, I called a break last evening for a little bit of baseball and laundry. Sometimes I forget how nice it is just to stay at home. The baseball game wasn't on ESPN :(, but I did come across a fun little movie called A Knight's Tale on TBS. I actually remember seeing this one in the theater. I like movies. I like bad movies. I really like bad movies that are so bad that they are good. I think that this might fall into

Walk the Plank

Down at the old Tipperary Inn last night, we went to see a little band of musicians called The Bilge Pumps . 7 Guys dressed as pirates singing bawdy tunes of the high seas with gags and improv galore. It was a little bit raunchy and a whole lot of funny with a good measure of slap-stick. The small venue was almost perfect as it brought the audience right into the action although it was had to hear at times. If you like pirates or off beat humor, check them out the next time they are in town. I never thought that I would say this, but thanks to Laura Miller for her Dallas smoking ban. After several nights out in Addison were the smoke was thick in the air, it was nice to be able to sit and enjoy the show without my eyes hurting or my throat feeling sore in the morning. Kudos. Too Much

I went back to the Flying Saucer last night for Elvis glass night. That's right, it was the anniversary of Elvis' death and the Saucer was kind enough to provide pint glasses that commemorated this grand occasion. At $8.50 a glass though, I'm starting to think that I shouldn't have gotten the matching set. But, the soft pretzels with cheese were an awesome late night snack. On tap for tonight, I believe there is some pirate-themed folk music to be had. Can't wait. Thank goodness for friends who drag you out night after night. The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Chocolate Malt, Roasted Almond, Orange Vanilla and Raspberry Cheesecake. Today we have our Parfaits on special for $2.99 all day long (regularly $3.69). If you have never tried one of our chocolate, vanilla or cappuccino parfaits before, now is a great time. They are only 3 points for Weight Watchers®. We have NOT received our shipment of Bagels, Pita and English Muffins. The UPS tra

Trivia Night

Image
Last night my friends and I went to the Flying Saucer in Addison. On Tuesday nights, the Saucer hosts four rounds of trivia with ten questions in each round. Having had a prior engagement, I arrived in the middle of round 2 for which I was able to get a couple of questions for the team. One of the fun things about my group of friends is our diversity. This can make for a potent trivia team. We fell hard in round three like most of the teams there, but had a bit of a rebound for the movie trivia in round 4. :) This could be a fun weekly event. The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Chocolate Malt, Roasted Almond, Orange Vanilla and Raspberry Cheesecake. Today is $3.69 Shake Day. (Regularly $3.93-$4.62) We did get a new variety of the GNU Flavor & Fiber bars called Chocolate Brownie. This bar is also 12 grams of fiber and only 2 points for Weight Watchers®. We also got two new types of syrup from Walden Farms: Strawberry and Blueberry. Wacky Photo Wednesday: It

Somedays

There are times that I sit here at the computer in the morning and just don't know what to write. I feel a general inability to find anything of interest. Some might simply call this writer's block, but I could probably a few paragraphs with relative ease. I just can't think of a topic for my general readership. I will say that you can tell UT Dallas is getting ready to go back to school. Aside from the general rumblings of my staff, there are new customers that are coming in the store looking for low carb, Weight Watchers® or just general healthy eating. It happens every year and every once in a while we get a special customer that walks through our doors and stays with us for the years they are at school whether it be as a customer or employee. We have been very fortunate over the years here at Sugarless deLite in this regard. The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Chocolate Malt, Roasted Almond, Orange Vanilla and Banana Macadamia Nut. Today is $1.

Welcome Weekend

I'd like to thank all of my friends that came over to the new place this weekend. It's great to have a place to call your own and be able to entertain again. Great friends are never to be unappreciated. I hope that you all had some fun. Maybe next time I'll have some Chex Mix or some type of snack item. I'm still trying to figure out this living alone thing for the time being. I did manage to finish Prison Break on Sunday. Three days 22 episodes. This show is awesome. I'm looking forward to season two which is only one week away. Additionally, Veronica Mars season two comes out at the end of the month so it seems that I will have another marathon of viewing enjoyment just around the corner. The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Chocolate Malt, Roasted Almond, Orange Vanilla and Banana Macadamia Nut. Why I Don't Like Doctors

Image
I went to the dentist yesterday. After a year of my best friend telling me that I needed to, I got dental insurance, set up an appointment and went. The dentist is never a fun place to go unless you are one of those ridiculously lucky people with great teeth. Of course, I am not one of those people. The work that was done wasn't that bad. The main problem was a result not of the several hours of work, but the one and a half hour wait that caused them not to finish. I have to go back now for another few hours in the chair and another blown day. I'm not looking forward to have to wait in that chair again. The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Grasshopper, Butterscotch, New York Cheesecake and Banana Macadamia Nut. Crème Pies are on sale this weekend for $14.99 (Regularly $19.99). It's been kind of a crazy week, and I totaly forgot to mention that we got a new variety of the Flavor and Fiber Bar: Chocolate Brownie Bar. This bar is also 2 points and has

New Wave

I've got a little bit more free time now that I have my apartment set up. Last evening I used that time to watch the first 8 episodes of Prison Break, which was one of the best shows on TV last year. I was not disappointed. This show is even better when taking from the beginning. I look forward to seeing the final 4 discs over the next week or so. It's nice to be able to sit down and relax and enjoy a show with good old 5.1 surround sound. :) The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Grasshopper, Butterscotch, New York Cheesecake and Banana Macadamia Nut. Crème Pies are on sale this weekend for $14.99 (Regularly $19.99). You can order one for tomorrow by 8 PM this evening. Friday Fun Fact: The first recorded Wave was on October 15, 1981, in Oakland, California, at the third game of the American League Championship Series between the Oakland A's and the New York Yankees. Now Open!

It's been a long few weeks, but my apartment is officially opened for visitors and now feels like home to me. I would like to thank my guest last night for coming over and sharing a celebration dinner. We had a wonderful meal with Pepper Plant Chipotle seasoned, pecan crusted salmon. There is no one else that I would have wanted to share my first cooked meal at my new home. The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Grasshopper, Butterscotch, New York Cheesecake and Banana Macadamia Nut. Tonight is buy one, get one free (limit one, excludes XL) from 6 PM to 8 PM. We have received our shipment of Bagels, Pita and English Muffins. We have all varieties on hand (Perfect 10, Blueberry, Cinnamon, Onion, Sweet Wheat and White). Once again we had a very busy week last week with our breads. We ordered more, but if you want the best selection, I would try to come in today, tomorrow or Saturday. It seems that we have a good many fearless romantics among our readers. Those

Haircut & a Shave

Image
OK, this time I got the haircut but not the shave. I've got a special dinner that I am hosting this evening and I wanted that clean look. There is a good possibility that there will be a shave in my near term future. The apartment is ready and as set up as need be. I still have some boxes to go through, but everything else is in it right place. The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Grasshopper, Caramel, Strawberry Shortcake and New York Cheesecake. Today is $3.69 shake day. I forgot to mention yesterday that we got in a new variety of the La Tortilla: 100% Fat Free. This is a one point traditional soft tortilla. Wacky Photo Wednesday: Aren’t these things self cleaning? Bad Hair Day. Thanks for those who participated in the quiz yesterday and left a comment.

Sleepless Night, Early Morning

Image
Last evening has to go down as my worst sleep ever. I didn't get to sleep until 4 AM and I woke up at 6:45 AM. Go figure. If I seem a little slow today, I apologize. Perhaps tonight exhaustion will play its roll in getting me a good night’s sleep. The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Chocolate Raspberry, Caramel, Strawberry Shortcake and New York Cheesecake (after 1 PM). Today is $1.85 Yogurt Cone Day. (Regularly $2.72) We have received a re-stock on the small size La Tortilla Green Onion, Wheat and Garlic varieties. Remember, 2 equal one point for Weight Watchers and they are all 3 net carbs. It was pointed out to me by one of our avid readers that last week's quiz was a repeat of one that I offered in May. I have now compiled a list of all of the quizzes and distraction to try and avoid this again. The interesting thing is that I got a different result. Not too surprising given all that has gone on lately. So here is your no repeat Daily Quiz: How Is

C Talladega Nights?

So, I did get to go see the new Will Ferrell comedy this weekend in between unpacking the kitchen at my apartment. I may have been the only one at the theater that was a little bit disappointed, but I did not feel that this was his best work by any measure. The comedy seemed forced at times and some of the situational humor was just uncomfortable. I'm not above low brow humor. In fact, some of my favorite comedies are Animal House, Van Wilder, Old School and those classics from the 80's; however, Talladega Nights just seemed to rely on the crass a little too much. I didn't leave the theater feeling that I had been ripped off, but I didn't leave thinking to myself that I could not wait to see it again or by it on DVD, which I will not do. Mixed in with some great laughs was a movie that was overly long and overly strained under the weight of its own perpetual stereotypes. It got some good laughs out of me, but it won't get more money. Only the Kitchen

Image
Outside of a few odds and ends, the only thing that remains is unpacking the kitchen. I will finally have the entire apartment set up by Sunday evening. It is going to be great getting to go home and cook and sit down and relax without having to get up in a few minutes time to continue unpacking. I think that next weekend will be nice. There is a possibility that I may go see Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby with some of my friends this evening. If I do, you can expect another movie review on Monday. I think that this will be the number one movie this weekend with 35 million plus in the three day stretch. Snail Mail

We've got an incoming email that is taking forever. There is something very wrong with not having access to DSL on one of the busiest corners in the Dallas area. Hint, hint AT&T. It's frustrating not even to have the option of purchasing this service. So we sit here and suffer away with slow downloads and emails that take 30 plus minutes to come through the mail box. One day just maybe we will get something that is a little faster. Finished...Sort of.

The world's (at least my personal) longest move is complete. This move was long for many reasons and the 6 day time frame didn't help. All that remains now is to get everything put away, the washer and dryer hooked up, the boxes sorted and a few little fixes put in place. I should be truly finished by the start of next week. It is great to have all of my stuff in one place again. The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Pistachio, Coffee Royal, Pumpkin and Egg Nog. Today we have a great in-store special. All day we will have the Eat Well Be Well product line available for one dollar off. The only thing that you have to do is ask for the special upon check out. This product line has breakfast bars, cereals and instant oatmeal that are all reduced carbohydrate offering and made with no sugar alcohols. We have received our shipment of Bagels, Pita and English Muffins. We have all varieties on hand (Perfect 10, Blueberry, Cinnamon, Onion, Sweet Wheat and White)

First, let me apologize for forgetting the link to yesterdays quiz. I put it on the Tuesday entry or you can click here for the quiz . Sometimes there is so much going on here at the store that I miss the little details. Today is the last day of my move. :) The pod was delivered this morning and awaits my arrival this evening to unload it. Then the fun part of putting the apartment together begins. You may see a few new faces at Sugarless deLite in the next month or so as we add a few more to the crew for the busy holiday season. Tim the younger has left us to spend more time on school and we are adding another Steven to the crew tomorrow. Be nice to them. Move Like the Tortoise

Image
This is the slowest move that I have ever been through, but at least my apartment is starting to take shape. Last night I was able to unpack a few boxes and do a preliminary set up on my bedroom. My large cargo unit will be delivered tomorrow and I will have everything in by tomorrow evening. I can't wait to get this thing finished so that I can sit down, relax and do nothing for just one evening. Thankfully, I have been motivated enough to make some upgrades to the apartment with the electronic thermostat, the new low flow shower head and the low energy light bulbs. I think that I am in good position for my electric bill. At twelve cents a kWh, I had better be. The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Pistachio, Coffee Royal, White Chocolate Raspberry and Lemon. We've got some crème pies available today for $12.99-walk in only.
