New Calendar on Monday!

As is our budding tradition on the day after Thanksgiving, Erica and I put up our Christmas tree and lights last night. This year we have a new pair of LED icicle lights that we've hung in front of our blue blinds. I think it adds a nice touch to the room with the tree lit and the icicles behind.

Once we had finished dinner, we decided to give the stocking hunt one more try. We've had a very hard time finding stockings. Last year, we opted to go without. So far this year, we've had just as hard of a time finding one that we both liked. While it was originally supposed to only be a trip to one store, it turned into a trip to several with a mall journey thrown in for good measure.

Finally, we found our match at Target. After the season is over, we'll get our names embroidered on them. We'll make due with them until then. The final thing to do for Christmas decorations is to find and agree on stocking holders. I'm looking forward to not having to do this again for another 10 to 15 years. Here's the winner (the one on the right):

After all of the shopping, we settled down to watch the movie that I had promised Erica. Her choice was Sleepless in Seattle which, despite its predictability, was a cute film. (Thank goodness for the Netflix streaming video or we might have been out of luck on this one.)

Black Friday Specials

Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Marshmallow, Pumpkin, Candy Cane, and Egg Nog.

Free small yogurt when you purchase an additional 25 dollars worth of merchandise and ask for the special.

Bonus: Oops, we baked too much. While we did extremely well this year, we did bake a few pies too many. We got a sale that will run from today until the end of Sunday while supplies last. All pumpkin, cherry, chocolate creme, and coconut creme pies are on sell for only $14.99.

I hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Erica and I had an excellent time in Arlington at a wonderful family linner. Thankfully, the Cowboys also managed a pretty good performance in their victory over the Seahawks, and the Longhorns dominated the Aggies in a rivalry that normally proves to be a little dangerous.

Black Friday is here. If you didn't get up this morning before the crack of dawn, you're probably one of the smart ones. I'm not, so I did. A very successful shopping trip was had at Target this morning. While most of the ads for black Friday did little for me this year, the ad for Target did have one fantastic item that drew me, and my wife because she loves me, out of bed this morning. Behold:

This thing is over 1'x 2' feet when completed. Flat out awesome. This is the kiddie version of the original that was about 50% larger. Kuddos to the people at Target for their organization and management. Good luck for the rest of the day. Thanks for having my Christmas present to myself.

Don't Forget the Dessert

Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Marshmallow, Pumpkin, Candy Cane, and Egg Nog.

Open from 10 AM to 5 PM today. Please pick-up pies by 4:30 PM.

We will be closed tomorrow for Thanksgiving. We will open at 10 AM on Friday and resume regular business hours.

If yesterday was kind of crazy, today will be crazy. It's like this every year. When you shove that many orders into 6 and 1/2 hours, you're bound to get busy. We're just so used to it. At this point in time, we're good with crazy. We have baked some extra for today as well. If you need anything, feel free to call us at 972.644.2000.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Quiz Day: What Does Your Thanksgiving Meal Say About You?

What Your Thanksgiving Meal Says About You

When it comes to the holidays, you follow and love the big traditions. You look forward to them every year.

You see the holidays as a time to be close to loved ones. It's a good time to reconnect and make memories.

You like the more adult aspects of the holidays - parties, cocktails, and having time off from work.

During the holidays, you are likely to feel energetic. At your worst, you feel bored.

You consider yourself to be a bit of a purist, and you're proud of it.

You tend to spend your holidays doing everything and anything. You really get into the holiday spirit.

25 November 2008

If you need a pie, cheesecake, or pumpkin bread, call us at 972.644.2000. The sooner you call, the more likely you are to get what you want.

If you've been in the store in the last few days, you've seen our tower of boxes growing each day. It is now time to put those towers to use. The bakery is ramped up and going strong. We'll put in a extra time from here until Thanksgiving. It is pretty much an open to close gig for the next three days.

Thanks to everyone who has pre-ordered. Remember if you have not, don't worry. Just call us in the next day or two and we should be able to accommodate you. If you have ordered, don't forget to pick your order up by Wednesday at 4:30 PM.

We're in for a busy weekend here at the store. With all of the last minute orders and planning for the three day stretch, we're going to have a lot to keep us occupied. Thankfully, we're pretty well tested. For as much of a strain as it sometimes can be, there is little that we haven't already come up against. It's like surfing this time of year, you just have to ride the waves.

The downside about Thanksgiving is that the work at the store leaves little time for anything else. The end of the day leaves one exhausted. The end of Wednesday leaves one ready to pass out. I'll admit that I'm not worth much on Thanksgiving. This year, I'm going to try and be worth a little more and do some of the cooking for the side dishes with my wife.

When we get back from Arlington, we'll probably pull the Christmas decorations out so that we can put them up on Friday when I get home from work. Since we've rearranged the living room, we'll have a bit more space for them this year. I know that this is one of Erica's favorite things to do. When were done with that, we might settle in and watch a holiday film of her choosing.

Green Tip: The tragic number of animals euthanized each year--9.6 million, according to the American Humane Association--is reason enough to help control pet population growth. But there's more. Feral animals kill mammals and songbirds and have been known to infect wild populations--and they're often the offspring of family pets. (It's believed, for instance, that the feline distemper afflicting the endangered Florida panther was transmitted by house cats.) Controlling the population reduces these problems, so make sure you spay or neuter your pet. [This tip brought to you by Page-a-day calendars.]

If you're looking for a way to help out with the feral population in the Dallas area, there is a wonderful group called Feral Friends that helps to keep down the population here at home. They also aid people in recovery of lost cats.

Happy Birthday Wishes to Björk Guðmundsdóttir. Known to most simply as Björk, she is one of my all time favorite female singers. After graduating from music school in 1980, she bounced around with several bands until 1986 when she fell in with The Sugarcubes. After recording three albums and gaining moderate success, the Sugarcubes broke up in 1992. In 1993, Björk released her first solo album called Debut. Since her first solo release, she has added five additional albums and two soundtracks to her discography. She was also the star in the movie Dancer in the Dark.

We're coming up on the final stretch for Thanksgiving. We'll be rather busy in the store over the next few days. You might notice when you come in that things have been moved around. Most of the front displays have been converted over to Christmas. If you can't find what you're looking for, we've still got it. Just ask us where we moved it.

Also, if you need a cake for the weekend, it is a good idea to go ahead and get your order in to the store. The last day to order anything that is not on the Thanksgiving form is Saturday the 22nd. Those orders that are not on the Thanksgiving form must be picked up on Sunday the 23rd. We've got a lot of pies to bake next week so we'll need the room.

The good news is that the weather will be a little more like fall. The cold front that is coming through today should put us into a stretch of sub-70s weather. A few cooler days always make it seem more like the holidays to me. I'm hoping the Thanksgiving day will be nice and cool so that the warm kitchen is pleasant rather than hot.

One thing that I try not to do during this time of year is add extra things to the mix. I try to get my holiday shopping done early. (Christmas is taken care of with the exception of one gift.) I try to get bills paid out. I try to basically get things accomplished so that I can focus on work and then relaxing when I get home from work.

This year, we've added a little kink. We're apartment shopping. After having a bad stretch with maintenance and management at our current apartment community, we've decided to move out and seek greener pastures. Hopefully, we'll get this nailed down in the next couple of days. Then we'll just have to figure out how to move during the post crush time of the Christmas season.

For my bendy friends-Quiz Day: What Yoga Pose Are You?

You Are the Tree Pose

You are a well grounded, down to earth person. Not much shakes you.
You can remain steady through a crisis - and other people lean on you.

You have high standards and morals. You easily rise above pettiness.
While people sometimes accuse you of being stubborn, you are able to shift focus when you need to.

In general, there is always an air of excitement in the store this time of year. The oven is going everyday. The workers are scurrying like elves with prep work since hardly anything actually comes pre-made to the store. All of this activity means that my work load is greatly amplified. As with most people around the main crush of the holiday season, I start to feel like there are not enough hours in the day for the work that needs to be done.

The downside is that when I get home, I just have such a hard time shutting down. Last night, I managed to rearrange the living room. Then, I played some video games. Next, I read the paper on-line. It's a special holiday insomnia. I'm hoping that I can get back on track with the whole sleep thing tonight. Maybe the workout tomorrow will help to take care of the excess energy. Something needs to give so I can get a good nights sleep.

The upside to the whole excess energy is that I do think the living room looks much better. It is a little more open now. Hopefully, we will only be in this apartment until the end of December. We'll find that out later today. Nevertheless, the excess furniture that we have sold over the last year has certainly freed up some needed space. If I can only tackle the clutter next, my wife would love me.

Cone Day! All cones are $2.08 today (regularly $2.77).

The countdown continues today. We've got through Sunday this week to take pre-orders on holiday pies, cheesecakes, and pumpkin breads. If you need something great for Thanksgiving, look no further than Sugarless deLite. You can call us at 972.644.2000 to place an order. The order form is listed in the previous entry below.

Forgive me if I seem a little groggy today. I had one of those nights last night where sleep did not come easily. The type where you are either too hot or not warm enough. Where you wake up at 3 and aren't able to go back to sleep until 5. That type of night. The type that sets you back a weeks worth of sleep in one evening.

I could say it was all because of the Cowboys exciting win in Washington, but that just wouldn't be true. Nevertheless, I was glad to see that the Cowboys were able to pull out a gritty win. It keeps some hope alive for the playoffs. I figure if they go 4 and 2 for the rest of the season, they should have a good shot at making it.

For a spell at the end of the game, the Cowboys actually looked like the teams of the early 90's. The teams where you knew that the Cowboys were going to run it, but you couldn't do anything but get manhandled after the snap. On top of the resurgence of the O-line, the defense decided to show up for a second game in a row.

One note about the blog: I've done a bit of house cleaning on the blog. I've taken off some of the old links. The baseball gadget has been removed, expect it to return next year when the season begins, and has been replaced in favor of a weather gadget that can be used to check the current conditions and the forecast for Richardson, Texas. Enjoy!

Well, the holiday time is certainly upon us at the store. A couple of days ago at dinner, Erica turned to me and said that I had the holiday look. I would guess that the look translates to a half crazed unable to shut down look. During this stretch of the year, I tend to revert back to my insomniac ways of old. Additionally, I develop a bizarre taste for fast-food.

I'm sure that this has something to do with the added stress of the season. Amazingly, a time that is supposed to be about love and peace with family and friends is typically the most stressful time of the year. Add to that the retail job, and the stress levels rise which translates to the inability to simply sleep.

On this front, however, I do think that the next Boot Camp session will help out tremendously. The early morning start time combined with the hard exercise program should help run off some of my nervous energy. But with only a few days left until the big day before Thanksgiving, I'll have a lot of that energy to burn.

Congratulations to Thi Tran & Nguyen Tran who got married today. Nguyen is one of my old friends from college. May your lives be blessed with happiness.

Green Tip: Go to work on the season's falling leaves with your trusty yard rake, and your emissions are limited to a little sweat. If you use a gas-powered leaf blower instead, you can spew out as much combustion emissions in an hour's work as a car puts out while traveling 350 miles. What's more, the car spreads pollution over a wide area--but the leaf blower puts it right in your yard. [This tip brought to you by the Page-a-Day calendar.]

Happy Birthday Wishes to Charles Philip Arthur George or The Prince Charles, Prince of Wales. Perhaps known better for his liasons in his personal life more than his prolific charitable works, The Prince of Wales is the heir apparent for the throne of the Head of the Commonwealth. This title however, has been an issue of much speculation in that he might be passed over in favor of his oldest son Prince William.

I finished up Olympos last night. The follow-up to Ilium was not on my TBR list, but my friend had loaned it to me along with Ilium, so I felt compelled to read it while the other was still fresh on my mind.

Both books made for a very interesting read. I do feel that the fist was better than the second. If indeed the second is the last, it felt like it was undecided. It's not that it doesn't end. Rather, I felt like it didn't end well. With so many story lines going on at on time, it seemed that the author, Dan Simmons, had trouble wrapping them all up without it being rushed. This really speaks as much to the scope of the book as anything else.

Now that I've finished these two, I'm off to my actual TBR list again. As previously mentioned, I don't have too much time to finish my list. I'm therefore going to switch it up a bit and plug in some of the alternates. The books that I have already read are Children of God, A Wrinkle in Time, and Ilium. My revised target list is as follows: East of Eden, Stardust, Alice's Adventure in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, Mere Christianity, The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Hobbit, Much Ado About Nothing, The Purpose Driven Life: What on Earth Am I here For?, and A Scanner Darkly. I might be pushing into January on this one.

I'll take the rain because we needed it. We're running a bit behind for our yearly average. Besides, it started to rain shortly after I got home last night, so it was nice to have the storm ranging all around as we were comfortably sitting on the couch. The cat, however, seemed to disagree.

Mr. Wilson is a scaredy cat. I guess most animals are when it comes to big storms. But our cat likes to freak out and go slinking around the downstairs into every which corner as if trying to escape from and unseen entity seeking to capture him. Assuming that he is not meowing up a storm himself, this is, at times, mildly entertaining. While he was rather talkative before the storm, the thunderclaps seemed to take the conversation from him.

I guess after a few hours of searching for shelter, he either exhausted himself or determined it was safe to hunker down in the living room. I went over to give him a belly rub. He either likes or tolerates these. After this particular rub and a bit of traditional cat petting, he actually flopped over on his back and took the traditional cat nap. I went back to reading my book.

The upside to the story that I'm about to tell is that Erica and I don't watch much TV. Our only TV decided to break on Saturday night. After 10 years of toiling away, manly for video games, it decided to freak out and cease operation. As I was playing Final Fantasy XII, the TV flicked off and then proceeded to turn on and off repeatedly. At no point and time did the picture actually come back to the screen. Truthfully, I was a little more bummed about the loss of my progress in the game at first.

The funny thing is how important a TV can become in our everyday lives. Neither Erica nor I watch much broadcast television. Together, we've put in less than 40 hours this year watching programs. While we do watch TV seasons on DVD and movies, even those are usually only once or twice a week. Even my gaming fix can come at the hands of the computer rather than a television. Still, it seem odd to think that I can't turn the TV on to put in a DVD or movie. It's just a thing in the corner that is now dead for all intents and purposes.

This was the first TV that I had ever bought. It was really my first major electronics purchase. While I have joked over the last few years about it breaking and having to upgrade to a new HD unit, I always assumed that it would hold on for another year or two. Now, I'm faced with having to fix it or replace it not because we need one, but because we will eventually want one. After all, the new season of Doctor Who is getting released this week and we will eventually want to watch it. Plus, the holidays have there own list of special movies that are fun to curl up and watch.

The good news is that there are options. The first will be to check into fixing the current unit. Anything more than 80 dollars might prove to much, but it is worth checking into the price and the possibility. If it is something minor, I'd hate to have just automatically taking it to the recycling center.

The second is Craig's List or eBay. If the fix doesn't work, a second hand TV is probably the next best option. Since a lot of people have upgraded over the last few years, there are a good number of relatively cheap and not too old CRT televisions out there. I can't see paying much more than 150 to 200 for one of these, but it might make for a good TV set to last for 3 to 4 years.

The last of course is to wait for Black Friday. Since the Friday after Thanksgiving always has some ridiculous deals, I might be able to find a 37"-42" HDTV for a silly price of 400 to 500. I'm not looking to spend it, but I do have some money set aside in a personal account for something of this nature. If the right deal comes along, I may have to strike.

As I said at the start, the upside is that we don't watch a lot of TV. We're thankfully in a position where we can wait a little while. Besides, this whole thing might be a to my To Be Read list. I've got 8 books to read in less than 50 days. (Although, I might cheat and give myself until the end of January since that was when I actually posted my books to read.)

I almost didn't wake up today for the workout session. When I hit my alarm, I must have hit the off button. Thankfully, I was anticipating the snooze cycle. I waited a bit and then checked the time. I ended up getting to Prestonwood at 7:55 AM. Still early, but I didn't get in my 10 minute stretch and warm-up session.

I figured this would hurt me a little in the PFT. To my surprise, however, we did not have the PFT today. Instead, we had a wonderful workout session of pain. I was looking forward to comparing my times and scores, but I'll have to save that for the next round in a few weeks. The upside is that I've got more time to prepare.

The bonus for finishing the first semester of boot camp is a T-shirt. At the end of the session, all of the newbies went up to the front of the class to get their T-shirt. I went and got mine and proudly wore it home. I guess if there wasn't going to be a PFT, a T-shirt is a good secondary. Besides, I actually feel like I've done some work for this one.

Green Tip: Many shampoos, including some billing themselves as "natural" or "organic" contain suspect chemicals: parabens, coal tar, sodium laureth sulfate, and many others. Some of these substances are carcinogenic, and though their small doses may have been proven safe, the cumulative drainage is harmful. Look for shampoos that are genuinely free of these ingredients. Some sites to check out for shampoo: www.terressentials.com (no synthetic ingredients or detergents), www.burtsbees.com (a bar of rosemary-mint-scented hair wash is all natural and also eliminates bottle waste), and www.aubrey-organics.com.

It will be December until we know all of the election results. There are two senate races that will be decided in the next few days. A third one will be decided in a run-off election in Georgia in December. There are a few house seats that still have to be decided as well. By the time everything is sorted out in the house and the senate, most of the cabinet should be in place. The next few weeks should also see a lot of action on this front.

Immediately after completing the grueling campaign season that stretches for 18 months, the winner is faced with the daunting task of governance. Yesterday, I heard that the incoming administration has the responsibility of filling over 7,000 positions. These positions are listed in a book that is called the United States Government Policy and Supporting Positions a.k.a. the Plum Book.

We managed to have a restful vacation in the sleepy town of Eureka Springs. Unfortunately, the leaves had already undergone their biggest change of the season, but it was still a wonderful view. The colors played off of each other, and the weather was warm. It was, in fact, a little too warm at times. Thankfully, most of the stores were still open. Although, finding them open throughout the day was a bit of a challenge.

We managed to hit most of our favorite places to eat and shop. We, and by we I mean I, did a much better job of not spending too much money in the local shops. While there were some great deals to be had since we were there so close to the end of the season, we resisted. With the bed and breakfast at such a reasonable rate and gas relatively cheap, we had a nice affordable break before the holiday season. It was a fantastic Christmas present to each other.

We watched the results roll in Tuesday night at one of the local bars. I have to say the the watching party was shorter lived than I had anticipated. With Ohio and Pennsylvania called so early in the night, it was just a matter of time until the west coast results came in and solidified a win for President-Elect Obama. We left the bar and walked back to the B&B. After listening to both of the gracious speeches, we went to sleep. Thank you Erica for letting me have my election night fun.

Now, we move forward to the gauntlet that is the holiday season. Around this time of the year, my wife gets to see a little less of me as I work to first get the store in order and then to get the store on track for holiday business. The first matter at hand will be the Christmas prep for all of the holiday goodies. Next, will be surviving the week of Thanksgiving. Then, we will have the fun of the holiday run to Christmas. It's time to mount up for one last run to the new year.

And the New President Is?

Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Chocolate Banana, Mocha Fudge, Strawberry Shortcake, and Angel Food Cake.

Shake Day! All shakes are on sale for $3.69 when you ask for the special (regularly $4.62).

Bonus special: For the next three days, you can get any of the political breath mints (Donkey or Elephant Tins) for one dollar off the regular price of $3.49. Just ask for the special blog special.

If you've ever found yourself wondering who does the blog while I am away, the answer is that it depends. On short trips such as this, I blog the entries in advance and then Rick edits the yogurt flavors. When I'm gone for longer periods of time, we have a guest blogger which is normally Rick or Stacey. It is an arrangement that works fairly well; however, the limitations are apparent when there is a major news event such as a national election. Oh well!

Quiz Day: What Day of the Week Are You?

You Are Tuesday

Like this day of the week, you are ruled by Mars.
More than anything, you are explosive.

You are headstrong and courageous. You are willing to take a risk with crazy odds.
You tend to be a bit impatient as well. You will push for what you want.

For you, it's fitting that Tuesday is election day in the United States.
You are a true catalyst for change, and you're willing to fight for what you want.

Bonus # 2 Say "I vote Sugarless deLite" and we will upsize your small or medium yogurt to the next size up at no additional charge.

This evening, I'll be sitting with my wife in Eureka Springs at the Balcony Restaurant in the Basin Park Hotel watching the election results roll across the screens. (Don't worry, she knew this was going to be part of the vacation.) Which ever way the results go, this will be a historic evening. It should be very interesting to watch.

Hopefully the lines will be merciful for you today if you are voting. I have no doubt that some of them will be long. Just remember to be courteous to your fellow voters. Look at it as sharing in history or a good case for early voting.

Tomorrow, we'll be heading home. Ready for the holiday onslaught that always begins at the mid-point in November. At least I should be well rested for it. That is the chief advantage to these early November vacations. Once the election is over, it will be time to get into the holiday swing of things. After all, there are only 19 days left to get your orders in for Thanksgiving.

If you didn't catch the blog entry from Saturday, I would recommend scrolling down and giving it a look. We announced some changes for the store that you might be interested in reading.

One change that I missed involves the yogurt shakes. We have stopped doing the Fruit Blendez, the Chai Tea, and the Green Tea shakes because of cost/popularity concerns. All shakes are also now $4.62 to avoid any confusion in price differential.

Tomorrow is the big day. Your chance to cast your ballot for the general elections, bonds, and other civic matters. Here is a list for each county for voting locations:

Dallas County

Collin County

Denton County

Tarrant County

Remember that Election Day is a little bit different than early voting. You will need to go the the correct polling location to cast your vote. If you have your voter registration card, bring it with you. If you do not, bring a state issued photo ID or, lacking one, a bill from a utility company.

Apparently there was a little shake-and-bake yesterday and today in the Metroplex. A small earthquake hit us yesterday, and the aftershocks came this morning. Since it was a minor one, I'm a little bummed that I missed it. I'm not saying it would be fun to live through a big one, but I think the experience of the smaller variety would be interesting.

Erica and I are getting ready to head out for a few days to escape before the holiday crush. This year we decided to do a vacation for our Christmas presents to each other. Given that we really have pretty much everything that we need or want, the holidays normally just end up loading us down with additional stuff which we spend the next year trying to eliminate. We're headed to Eureka Springs for a little R&R at a B&B.

I'm really looking forward to getting out on one of the nature trails this time and taking in some of the autumn foliage. It should be a perfect time of year to see all of the trees turning. We're going to make sure to take a lot of photos. There should be some good candid animal shots.
