Roller Derby!

Man was it a busy weekend. I feel like I moved all weekend and in between the moves managed to squeeze in a few events. Saturday night I got to catch up with three of my old girlfriends from college that I haven't seen for almost 6 years. It's always fun seeing old friends. The Sunday night event was a trip to Lewisville to see the final matches of the first regular season for the Dallas Derby Devils. If you've ever seen the old rendition of roller derby, then you have an idea of the spectacle that I witnessed last night. The new version is a little different since they have done away with the raised tracks in favor of the flat track at your local roller rinks. The fans line up just outside of the track for a chance to be run into by one of the participants in the derby and to build beer pyramids from the empty cans at this BYOB event. The skaters all have funny names not unlike the XFL and were costumes for their teams. The action reminded me a lot of the WWF in the 1980&#

Visionary

I went to a friend’s birthday party last night and saw a lot of my fraternity brothers that I have not seen in quite a while. It is always good catching up with old friends. You know that you are moving on a little bit down the road of life when you sit around the kitchen counter and talk about old times and trips. It's kind of funny to think that most of my brothers from my pledge class, who are for the most part 3 to 4 years younger than I, have stable jobs. I guess it's bound to happen. The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Pistachio, Peanut Butter, White Chocolate Raspberry and Lemon. Today is buy one, get one free (limit one, excludes XL). We also have a couple of Key Lime crème pies that we have placed on special this weekend for $12.99. These will go quickly. I think that we have solved the email problem that has plagued us over the last month. The first batch of emails went out without a problem. The rest of the emails to our email group will go

Murphy's Law

Murphy's Law : Things will go wrong in any given situation, if you give them a chance. (alternative statements: "If there's more than one way to do a job, and one of those ways will result in disaster, then somebody will do it that way.", "Whatever can go wrong, will go wrong." or "Anything that can go wrong, will.") Murphy’s Law sums up the initial portion of my move this morning. I think that I shall be happy with the new apartment when all is said and done; however, it started off on the wrong foot this morning. When I arrived to pick up my key, I sat in the office for 20 minutes waiting for my key. I never got my key because the locks have not yet been changed and the carpet is still not clean. See above stated law. On a lighter note, the Kinky Freidman rally provided some interesting entertainment last evening. I counted around 250 supporters jammed into the Magnolia Theater at Fair Park. Without getting into the politics of the event, it was

Excited & Kinky

One day left until I take possession of my new apartment. I'm looking forward to this move if you cannot tell. It will be nice when I finally get a chance to get everything set up next week. In the mean time, I shall simply enjoy the closer proximity to work and downtown and the dramatically increased living area. This evening should be interesting as my friends and I are going to the Kinky Friedman rally downtown. I don't think that this one will be business as usual for a political campaign. My major at UT Dallas was Political Science, so you will have to forgive me if I find this kind of thing fascinating. The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, German Chocolate Cake, Toffee Coffee, White Chocolate Raspberry and Lemon. Today is $2.99 Coke Float Day (regularly $4.69). We have received our shipment of Bagels, Pita and English Muffins. We have all varieties on hand (Perfect 10, Blueberry, Cinnamon, Onion, Sweet Wheat and White). Last week, everything went

Dare to Hope

Image
I saw the weather report yesterday and I see the clouds today, but I don't want to get my hopes up to much about the possibility of rain. Wouldn't it be nice? I love rain, yet this is more than just my preference of weather. This is a need. We need the rain to wash things away, to fill some of the reservoirs and to bring a sense of normalcy. I would be nice. We'll just have to wait and see. Side note for those of you keeping track at home, I've almost completed all of the arrangements for my move this weekend. It won't be a smooth as I had hoped, but it will work and that is good enough for me. The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, German Chocolate Cake, Toffee Coffee, Very Berry and Lemon. Today is $1.79 Cone Day (Regularly $2.72). Wacky Photo Wednesday: Now this is one determined dog. You can't say that you weren't warned.

Bad Moon Rising?

Image
On the drive into work today I hear the Smiths song How Soon Is Now followed by the Blue Oyster Cult song Don't Fear (The Reaper) on JAKK FM. If the sky had been a dark gray and I was slightly more superstitious, I would be wary of the day ahead. Thankfully, I am a foolishly optimistic person and therefore was able to sit and sign along to these two great songs. (And yes Christopher Walken, Don't Fear could have used a little more cow bell.) The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, German Chocolate Cake, Toffee Coffee, Very Berry and Lemon. Quiz Day: Last week's quiz seemed a little difficult, and I noticed that we had fewer posted comments on it. This week will go back to the fun and easy quiz: What Element Is Your Love ? Your Love Element Is Water In love, you connect deeply and commit totally. For you, love is all about taking risks and moving into unknown territory. You attract others with courage and confidence. Your flirting style is defined by yo

Manic Monday

This coming weekend I'll move into my new place which means I have some things to take care of in the next few days like electricity, change of address, internet, getting a few fraternity brothers to help with their trucks, et cetera. It's gonna be a busy week. Thankfully, I am already packed and ready to go with the exception of a few loads of laundry. I think that the move is just what the doctor ordered. Although it may be a little sad living alone, I'll be much closer to my friends. The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Chocolate Mint, Cappuccino, Very Berry and Lemon. You've got one more week to enjoy the Pies of the Month (Blueberry and Peach) at $14.99 (regularly $19.99). Our August calendar will be available by Friday. The Owner's Corner: This is Rick Merlin coming to you from Austin, Texas. This weekend we've taken a short trip to Austin to prepare my daughter for her next semester at school. As we were preparing for the trip, it

To Boldly Go...

If you've ever wondered how I come up with the topic for the blog everyday, the answer is simple. I most often take a small portion of my life and put it into words. I'm sure that most readers don't really care what I've done over the weekend or the previous evening, and I know that a good number could do without the sports updates; however, I also know that there is a unique voyeuristic quality that many people have that makes reading even the mundane details of someone else interesting. It's human nature. From time to time when I hear about something out of the ordinary, I try to present it in the blog. Enter the story that I heard on NPR on the drive into work today about a fan show rendition of the original Star Trek series. It seems that some individuals in the state of New York have received permission from CBS/Paramount to pick up where the original show left off in 1969 and plan to finish filming the 5 year mission by completing the final 2 seasons of the s

Sleepy Head

I'm a bit of a snoozer and have been for as long as I can remember. Normally, I can remember turning to my alarm and hitting the snooze button and then lying in that semi-awake state called snooze. I woke up early this morning and after snoozing two times I picked up my cell phone, one of my two alarms, and noticed it was running low on its charge. I decided to reset my alarm on the phone for 20 minutes later, charge the phone and the get up to get ready with the alarm. The funny thing is that I only remember my head hitting the pillow and the alarm. There was nothing in-between the two. I guess I needed the extra 20 minutes of sleep. The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Chocolate Mint, Cappuccino, Very Berry and Peach. This weekend we have our crème pies at the special price of $12.99 (regularly $19.99). If you would like one for this weekend, call today and we can have any variety available for you tomorrow (Banana, Cappuccino, Coconut, Chocolate, Key Lim

An Ounce of Prevention

A few days ago, I noticed that my front right tire seemed to be a little low. Since I couldn't find my old tire gage I got a new one last night (a neat mini gauge with a magnet so if fits and holds inside the gas cap area). I checked the tires this morning and to my surprise the three of the four tires were low, but the back left tire was very low. It didn't even look that bad. I'm willing to bet that I get better gas mileage now that I have corrected that problem. So if you’re like me and you haven't checked your tire pressure in a while, I would recommend doing it because you never know when one of your tires is running on 40 percent of the required pressure. Click here for some tips . The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Chocolate Mint, Pecan Praline, Very Berry and Peach. Today is Coke Floats for $2.99 (regularly $4.62). Shopping Time

Image
I'm about to spend a good bit of money here over the next few weeks. In addition to moving to my new apartment and all of the fun expenses that go along with the move, I also have my car insurance renewal coming up at the beginning of August. Normally this would be somewhat of a laugh, but gone are the wonderful days of having the bare minimum in coverage for my old clunker Lumina. I almost choked when I saw the quote for the moderately new 2002 Corolla that I have. As much as I don't want to, it is time to partake in that painstaking adventure of shopping for insurance. Let the fun begin. I'd say all of this is quite a pain in the neck, but I think that is actually from sleeping on it the wrong way. I'm looking forward to a little Friday night yoga action to take care of my neck and back. The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Chocolate Mint, Pecan Praline, Very Berry and Peach. Today is $1.79 Cone Day (regularly $2.72). Wacky Photo Wednesday: Th

Shave and a Haircut?

Image
Not quite. Just the shave folks, so don't be surprised if you come in today and see me completely clean shaven which has been a rare occurrence over the last 10 years. In the mist of doing a deep clean in my room and bathroom, I got the sudden urge to go baby faced again. Perhaps it's since other things are changing as well. No telling the reason, but it seemed like a great idea at the time. Besides with the temperatures where they are, a shaved face is kind of nice. As for the haircut, maybe I'll get one in another few weeks. (Side note: I've got some mad skills when it comes to cleaning. The bathroom is spotless and cleaner than ever.) The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Chocolate Malt, Pecan Praline, Strawberry Shortcake and Peach. Yesterday SerenitySprings left a comment with a question about Rick's Tip of the Week. The answer lies in the unique properties of fiber. The use of fiber in your diet helps to "move" fats along your

New Segment

I hope that everyone had a wonderful weekend despite the heat. I was able to be productive and get my room cleaned up and ready for my move at the end of the month. I sign my new lease on Saturday. It only took me two days to find my new apartment after I started looking. Sometimes it might seem that I move at a slow pace, but once I know which direction to go, I'm a quick and decisive about it. So now I have almost everything packed and ready to go. It will be nice to have a 10 minute drive into work instead of the 25 to 30 minute drive. Moreover, it will be great to be closer to my friends and the Addison/Dallas area. The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Chocolate Malt, Pecan Praline, Strawberry Shortcake and Peach. (Lots of new flavors!) There is a new segment for Mondays called the Owner's Corner. This is a chance for the owner, Rick Merlin, to speak with you and share some of his helpful hints for weight loss and life. Juke Boxes and Jackpots

Image
If you put 5 dollars into the juke box at your local pub and you get your songs played, immediately go out and buy a lottery ticket because I'm pretty sure it takes a large amount of luck to accomplish this task. Last night my friends and I waited over 3 hours to hear any of our songs to no avail. The only fortunate part is that one of the persons in the front of the queue had good taste. (Towards the end of the evening our conclusion was that the wait staff was actually re-setting the box since I witnessed an event that seemed to confirm this. This should be illegal. I don't mind putting money in and not winning the juke box lottery, but I hate to think that I never had a chance.) The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Peanut Butter, French Vanilla, Strawberry Shortcake and Pina Colada. 100 Degrees and Counting

Image
Sometimes I think that I should take the approach of the ostrich when it comes to weather in Texas during the summer months and just bury my head in the sand. There is something that is just so depressing about watching the weather and seeing 100 degrees plus run across the screen for seven straight days. Fortunately, I work in a nice cool store with excellent frozen yogurt that helps to cut the heat. The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Peanut Butter, French Vanilla, Strawberry Shortcake and Pina Colada. Today's special is a 50 % Off Sale on all items on the sale rack (located at the center of the store). Come in and get some super savings today only. Fun Fact Friday: Tonya Harding was the first American ice skater to successfully land a triple axel in competition. In 1991, at the age of 21, Harding won her first National title, landing a triple axel in both her short and long programs, scoring perfect 6.0s for technical merit-a feat that has never been du

The Slowest Day

Image
Today is considered to be the slowest day of the year for sports fans. There is nothing going on today. However, here at Sugarless deLite we are not going to let that get us down. Here is a question that you may feel free to answer in the comments section: On a slow, lazy day, what do you most enjoy doing? Myself? I like to sleep in until 11 or so, do some light cleaning around the house, watch a couple of hours of TV or read or play video games depending on my mood, go out for an hour or two running errands and cook a nice dinner. Even when I'm relaxing, I like to stay busy. The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Peanut Butter, French Vanilla, Orange Vanilla and Pina Colada. Today is $1.79 cone day (regularly $2.72). Wacky Photo Wednesday: Nip/Tuck: Sharpie Edition Last photo from the World Cup. How cool is this mural? All Stars

The Major League Baseball All-Star game is tonight. This marks the traditional half way point in the baseball season and the time to revise any predictions made at the start first half. It just so happened that I was brave enough to blog my predictions back in April. On the 10th of April, these were my picks: NL East: Braves NL Central: Cardinals NL West: Los Angeles Wild Card: Mets AL East: NY Yankees AL Central: Cleveland AL West: A's Wildcard: White Sox At the half way point, I do have a few revisions: NL East: NY Mets NL Central: Cardinals NL West: Los Angeles Wild Card: San Diego AL East: NY Yankees AL Central: White Sox AL West: A's Wildcard: Tigers Of course the game, which doesn't and shouldn't count for anything (pay attention Bud), is being played at PNC Park home of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Is it merely a coincidence that the Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Dead Man's Chest came out this weekend (grossing over 134.5 million dollars in the 3 day stre

Some mornings when you wake up, and it does seem to be Mondays more often than not, you feel like you're hung over not from drink but from a few to many stiff shots from life. Perhaps one of the reasons that Mondays get such a bad rap is that you know that you don't have another day or two to collect your thoughts and rest because somehow or another you just saw another weekend disappear. On the other hand, getting back into the grove of things at work can be a good thing as well. I bet that the French are having very similar thoughts this morning...except for that whole part about work being a good thing. The ever elusive Sunday post. There's not to much to say here except that I would encourage everyone to join the rest of the world and watch the World Cup final featuring Italy v France. If your riding the wave of pirate popularity and have cable, there is a special on the real pirates of the Caribbean tonight on the History channel at 7 PM. The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Butterscotch, French Vanilla, Orange Vanilla and Pina Colada. Hope that everyone enjoys the rest of their weekend.

She be OK

I did get to see the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest last night. I seem to be acquiring this bad little habit of going to sold out movies late and having to sit at the front left. Good thing that I was bendy from my yoga outing. I only got a very good view of the left side of the film so I may be a little biased. The film itself is a fun ride. It is not a great film like the first, but a good film none the less. As I explained to my friends afterwards, the film suffers from the Halo 2 effect. It is the follow up to a very successful first film that people did not have great expectations for. Moreover, it is a film that is used as a bridge to the final installment of the series so it suffers from a bit of a let down ending. The action scenes are over the top as usual and the special effects are something special. The acting is good, but the story doesn't seem to allow them time to bring about greater character development. This is saying a lot since the film is 155 mi

Arrrrr, there be a movie on the horizon.

The summer movie season is in full effect now with the back to back releases of Superman Returns and this week’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. If I'm not mistaken, I believe that we may have a few pirate fans out there in our mist. I've seen some mixed reviews on the second installment of this theme park amusement ride movie. I may have a personal review for everyone tomorrow. The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, German Chocolate Cake, Cappuccino, Orange Vanilla and Raspberry Cheesecake. The bagels, pita and English Muffins are now in stock. We have all varieties available in the store. This weekend we have a double pie special for you with our Pecan Pies and our pies of the month (Blueberry and Peach) for $14.99 (regularly $19.99). Come in and get some get some pie. Fun Fact Friday: (The pirate theme continues.) As a warning to would-be pirates, Captain William Kidd's corpse was tarred and hung over the Thames River for several ye

On the Hunt

I'm looking for an apartment again. In what seems to be a time honored yearly tradition, I am looking for my new domicile. You would think that with modern technology the process would be easier but they have certainly not perfected that side of the industry. Where ever I end up, I know that it will be slightly closer than my drive from Allen which means that my little Corolla should only need to be filled up twice a month. I'll have this one nailed down by next week. The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, German Chocolate Cake, Cappuccino, Orange Vanilla and Raspberry Cheesecake. Today is Coke Float Day with or floats only $2.99 (regularly $4.69). Remember, because of the July 4th holiday, the bagels will be delivered tomorrow. We do have all of the bagels except for the Perfect 10 available in the freezer. We have received our shipment in from FiordiFrutta and are re-stocked on the Cranberry, Peach, Plum, Strawberry and Wild Blueberry fruit spreads. Las

Kaboom!

It seems that rainy weather, burn bans, and city restrictions weren't enough to stop everyone from celebrating our nation's 230th birthday yesterday with the time honored fireworks tradition. I heard fireworks going off past twelve in the North Dallas area. Speaking of rain, how cool was it to actually get some sustainable precipitation? I know it wasn't the best day for it, but it is good to actually have gotten some measurable amount. We may even be in for a little bit later in the week. :) The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, German Chocolate Cake, Cappuccino, Raspberry Cheesecake and Banana. Today is $1.79 cone day (regularly $2.72). I'm pretty sure that I forgot to mention last week that we got a new type of brittle. We now have a sugar free sunflower seed brittle. It may sound odd, but it tastes great! Wacky Photo Wednesday: Superman in his early years. World Cup Report: The host team Germany went down in defeat yesterday at the hands of t

We Are Open!

Just one more reminder, we are open today, the 4th of July, from 12 PM to 6 PM. We have all of our shakes on special today for $2.99. Also, we have a one day $9.99 special on our crème pies (regularly $19.99). The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, German Chocolate Cake, Cappuccino, Raspberry Cheesecake and Banana. Quiz Day: In keeping with the theme of patriotism, today's quiz asks How American Are You ? You Are 68% American Most times I am proud to be an American. Though sometimes the good ole US of A makes me cringe Still, I know there's no place better suited to be my home. I love my freedom and no one's going to take it away from me! I hope that everyone has a wonderful and safe 4th of July! If you get a chance, come by and see us.

Half Way Point

For those of you not keeping count, the year is now officially half way over. Once again Father Time has worked his magic and whisked us thru the first half of 2006. Less than six months to the Christmas shopping season. :( That's really not that much time...I better start getting some of my shopping done. Speaking of shopping, if you like cokes or canned beverages then make sure you stop by your local grocery store today or tomorrow to get some great specials. A good number of stores including Kroger and Albertsons have specials on certain brands that allow you to get five 12 packs for 10 dollars. That's 18 cents per can after taxes! Of course, I would not encourage people to drink cokes left and right, but these specials also include the diet and non-caffeinated varieties. It beats 4.79 for a 12 pack. The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Devil's Food Cake, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Raspberry Cheesecake and Banana. Today's in-store special is 5

July Specials

Image
You can tell that the July 4th weekend is in effect. Driving into work today was a breeze. The pace seems a little slower outside the store. That and the fact that we have a fair number of cakes ordered with red, white and blue writing on them. Just to let everyone know, we will be open regular hours this week except for the 4th of July when we will be open from 12 PM to 6 PM. The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Devil's Food Cake, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Banana and Raspberry Cheesecake. Our Pie Specials this month are the Peach and the Blueberry Fruit Pies which are available all month for $14.99 (regularly $19.99). We have a full assortment of bakery items that are available this weekend. A note for our customers on our email list, I am still having some issues with Outlook Express. I hope to have the emails to you by the 5th or 6th of July. Thank you for your patience. The July Calendar: World Cup Report: This is why the World Cup is known as the greate
