Roller Derby!

Man was it a busy weekend. I feel like I moved all weekend and in between the moves managed to squeeze in a few events. Saturday night I got to catch up with three of my old girlfriends from college that I haven't seen for almost 6 years. It's always fun seeing old friends. The Sunday night event was a trip to Lewisville to see the final matches of the first regular season for the Dallas Derby Devils. If you've ever seen the old rendition of roller derby, then you have an idea of the spectacle that I witnessed last night. The new version is a little different since they have done away with the raised tracks in favor of the flat track at your local roller rinks. The fans line up just outside of the track for a chance to be run into by one of the participants in the derby and to build beer pyramids from the empty cans at this BYOB event.

The skaters all have funny names not unlike the XFL and were costumes for their teams. The action reminded me a lot of the WWF in the 1980's. You were never quite sure if the event was staged or real and of course the participants and most of the fans would try to kill you if you said it was not real. There were injuries, there was some acting and there was some fast past skating. On this evening the High Seas Hotties took home the biggest win and remained undefeated for the regular season of the Dallas Derby Devils.

The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Pistachio, Peanut Butter, White Chocolate Raspberry and Lemon.

Today is your last chance to get a Peach or Blueberry Pie for $14.99 (regularly $19.99). Tomorrow, we will have the calendar for the month of August posted on the blog.

The Owner's Corner Tip of the Week: Stop wasting calories and points. Full calorie dressings have 3 to 4 points per serving and should always be avoided. What most people do not know is that Fat Free dressings are just another trap. Most Fat Free dressings are loaded with sugar and high fructose corn syrup that act to inhibit weight loss.

Instead, try one of our Walden Farms dressings that are fat free, zero carb and calorie free. If you're worried about the taste, we have open samples of all of the dressings available for you to try. Just ask and we will be happy to help you. We also have 8 types of grilling sauces and marinades that will cost you zero points. Smart choices will lead you to your better lifestyle. Let us help you.

Visionary

I went to a friend’s birthday party last night and saw a lot of my fraternity brothers that I have not seen in quite a while. It is always good catching up with old friends. You know that you are moving on a little bit down the road of life when you sit around the kitchen counter and talk about old times and trips. It's kind of funny to think that most of my brothers from my pledge class, who are for the most part 3 to 4 years younger than I, have stable jobs. I guess it's bound to happen.

The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Pistachio, Peanut Butter, White Chocolate Raspberry and Lemon. Today is buy one, get one free (limit one, excludes XL).

We also have a couple of Key Lime crème pies that we have placed on special this weekend for $12.99. These will go quickly.

I think that we have solved the email problem that has plagued us over the last month. The first batch of emails went out without a problem. The rest of the emails to our email group will go out today.

Murphy's Law

Murphy's Law: Things will go wrong in any given situation, if you give them a chance. (alternative statements: "If there's more than one way to do a job, and one of those ways will result in disaster, then somebody will do it that way.", "Whatever can go wrong, will go wrong." or "Anything that can go wrong, will.")

Murphy’s Law sums up the initial portion of my move this morning. I think that I shall be happy with the new apartment when all is said and done; however, it started off on the wrong foot this morning. When I arrived to pick up my key, I sat in the office for 20 minutes waiting for my key. I never got my key because the locks have not yet been changed and the carpet is still not clean. See above stated law.

On a lighter note, the Kinky Freidman rally provided some interesting entertainment last evening. I counted around 250 supporters jammed into the Magnolia Theater at Fair Park. Without getting into the politics of the event, it was a fun rally to attend. Independent candidates tend to have a little bit of a different take on how to hold a rally than the established parties. I only have two complaints. If your in attendance at an over capacity event and you showed up late so that you are in the back of the crowd, it doesn't give you the right to start talking with everyone around you because you cannot hear the speaker. Second, the merchandise booth should not be right next to the speaker. This way anyone who wants to shop the table is not forced to stand in line for an hour.

The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, German Chocolate Cake, Toffee Coffee, White Chocolate Raspberry and Lemon.

Today our sale rack is 50% off. Come in today and find some great savings.

We have received a re-stock shipment on the following items: Apple Butter, Sour Cherry Spoon Fruit, Chick-O-Sticks, Peanut Butter Bars, Gnu Flavor & Fiber Bars, Mediterranean Relish, Chocolate Almonds (Milk), and Al Dente Pasta.

Fun Fact Friday: The number of twin births in the United States is increasing. According to the National Center from Health Statistics, between 1980 and 2000, the number of twin births increased 74%. Triplet births have increased fivefold. The increase is attributed to American women getting pregnant later in life (multiple gestations are more likely after the age of 30) and the rise of fertility drugs and assisted reproductive techniques such as in vitro fertilization. (This fact brought to you by Fact or Crap calendar.)

Excited & Kinky

One day left until I take possession of my new apartment. I'm looking forward to this move if you cannot tell. It will be nice when I finally get a chance to get everything set up next week. In the mean time, I shall simply enjoy the closer proximity to work and downtown and the dramatically increased living area.

This evening should be interesting as my friends and I are going to the Kinky Friedman rally downtown. I don't think that this one will be business as usual for a political campaign. My major at UT Dallas was Political Science, so you will have to forgive me if I find this kind of thing fascinating.

The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, German Chocolate Cake, Toffee Coffee, White Chocolate Raspberry and Lemon. Today is $2.99 Coke Float Day (regularly $4.69).

We have received our shipment of Bagels, Pita and English Muffins. We have all varieties on hand (Perfect 10, Blueberry, Cinnamon, Onion, Sweet Wheat and White). Last week, everything went out the front door just about as quickly as the shipment came in the back. Don't delay; we have them all today.

The winner of last week's poll question was Dr. Pepper. Given that we are in Texas that is not surprising. This week, as the weather has been weighing on me, I have decided to ask everyone: What Is Your Favorite Season? If you're reading, please take a moment and vote.

Today's random link is complements of my friend Holly and is a fun little program to goof around with in your spare time. My Heritage is a site where you can up load photos of people and the software will run a face recognition program and show you famous people who have similar features.

Dare to Hope

I saw the weather report yesterday and I see the clouds today, but I don't want to get my hopes up to much about the possibility of rain. Wouldn't it be nice? I love rain, yet this is more than just my preference of weather. This is a need. We need the rain to wash things away, to fill some of the reservoirs and to bring a sense of normalcy. I would be nice. We'll just have to wait and see.

Side note for those of you keeping track at home, I've almost completed all of the arrangements for my move this weekend. It won't be a smooth as I had hoped, but it will work and that is good enough for me.

The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, German Chocolate Cake, Toffee Coffee, Very Berry and Lemon. Today is $1.79 Cone Day (Regularly $2.72).

Bad Moon Rising?

On the drive into work today I hear the Smiths song How Soon Is Now followed by the Blue Oyster Cult song Don't Fear (The Reaper) on JAKK FM. If the sky had been a dark gray and I was slightly more superstitious, I would be wary of the day ahead. Thankfully, I am a foolishly optimistic person and therefore was able to sit and sign along to these two great songs. (And yes Christopher Walken, Don't Fear could have used a little more cow bell.)

Quiz Day: Last week's quiz seemed a little difficult, and I noticed that we had fewer posted comments on it. This week will go back to the fun and easy quiz: What Element Is Your Love?

Your Love Element Is Water

In love, you connect deeply and commit totally.
For you, love is all about taking risks and moving into unknown territory.

You attract others with courage and confidence.
Your flirting style is defined by your flexibility and ability to adapt.

Nurturing and shared learning are the cornerstones of your love life.
And while you may jump in to love too quickly, you always come out the wiser for it.

You connect best with: Metal

Avoid: Earth

You and another Water element: will pull each other down into a dark place

I look forward to seeing the other elemental results. If you take the quiz, please take a minute to post your results. It makes the blog more fun for everyone. Thanks.

Manic Monday

This coming weekend I'll move into my new place which means I have some things to take care of in the next few days like electricity, change of address, internet, getting a few fraternity brothers to help with their trucks, et cetera. It's gonna be a busy week. Thankfully, I am already packed and ready to go with the exception of a few loads of laundry. I think that the move is just what the doctor ordered. Although it may be a little sad living alone, I'll be much closer to my friends.

The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Chocolate Mint, Cappuccino, Very Berry and Lemon.

You've got one more week to enjoy the Pies of the Month (Blueberry and Peach) at $14.99 (regularly $19.99). Our August calendar will be available by Friday.

The Owner's Corner: This is Rick Merlin coming to you from Austin, Texas. This weekend we've taken a short trip to Austin to prepare my daughter for her next semester at school. As we were preparing for the trip, it dawned on me that I often here some of our customers complain about there problems with weight loss and vacation. I think that I might be able to help. Vacations do not have to be fattening. I have traveled to Las Vegas and other locations several times over the last 18 months and have been able to stay at my current or lose additional weight on each of these vacations. I have eaten shrimp, crab, prime rib, chicken, fruit, salads, Bar-BQ and a lot of other great foods.

Tip of the Week: Generally, I suggest staying away from simple carbohydrates such as bread, sugar, pasta, mixed drinks and desserts. Additionally, remember to watch your fat intake. These simple steps, when followed, will not radically cut out what you can have so you will still be able to go out and enjoy your meals.

For vacations, we all tend to eat a little more than we normally would. You can counter this by doing a little bit of extra walking. This doesn't mean that you need to build in a whole exercise routine into your vacation, but you can walk the few blocks to the next location instead of taking a cab or swim a little at the hotel pool. The added exercise will help to counter those extra calories.

To Boldly Go...

If you've ever wondered how I come up with the topic for the blog everyday, the answer is simple. I most often take a small portion of my life and put it into words. I'm sure that most readers don't really care what I've done over the weekend or the previous evening, and I know that a good number could do without the sports updates; however, I also know that there is a unique voyeuristic quality that many people have that makes reading even the mundane details of someone else interesting. It's human nature. From time to time when I hear about something out of the ordinary, I try to present it in the blog.

Enter the story that I heard on NPR on the drive into work today about a fan show rendition of the original Star Trek series. It seems that some individuals in the state of New York have received permission from CBS/Paramount to pick up where the original show left off in 1969 and plan to finish filming the 5 year mission by completing the final 2 seasons of the show. If your a Trekkie or closet Trekkie then you can take a look and download the new shows free of charge for Star Trek: New Voyages.

The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Chocolate Mint, Cappuccino, Very Berry and Peach.

This weekend we have our crème pies at the special price of $12.99 (regularly $19.99). We have started our day with several on hand that are available for pick up today.

Your Saturday Distraction: What Flavor Margarita Are You?

You Are a Mango Margarita

Complex and sophisticated, you're the type most likely to order a round of twelve dollar designer margaritas.
You also entertain with flair, and you've whipped up a few original signature drinks in your time!

Lastly, I ate at the Veggie Garden in Richardson last night (Custer and Arapaho behind the Arby's) and had a wonderful meal. If you ever want a great meat free meal, I would recommend giving this place a try. They have a very expansive menu and everything that I tried was very good. (This was my lead for the blog until I heard about the Star Trek shows.) I hope that everyone has a great weekend.

Sleepy Head

I'm a bit of a snoozer and have been for as long as I can remember. Normally, I can remember turning to my alarm and hitting the snooze button and then lying in that semi-awake state called snooze. I woke up early this morning and after snoozing two times I picked up my cell phone, one of my two alarms, and noticed it was running low on its charge. I decided to reset my alarm on the phone for 20 minutes later, charge the phone and the get up to get ready with the alarm. The funny thing is that I only remember my head hitting the pillow and the alarm. There was nothing in-between the two. I guess I needed the extra 20 minutes of sleep.

The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Chocolate Mint, Cappuccino, Very Berry and Peach.

This weekend we have our crème pies at the special price of $12.99 (regularly $19.99). If you would like one for this weekend, call today and we can have any variety available for you tomorrow (Banana, Cappuccino, Coconut, Chocolate, Key Lime, Lemon and Vanilla) or stop in today and see what we have on hand.

Fun Fact Friday: The yeast extract left over from the manufacture of beer is considered a delicacy in Australia. Fred Walker, a Melbourne native working in the food industry, found that the tons of leftover yeast extract that comes from brewing beer were not only a good source of vitamin B, but also quite delicious-if you liked that sort of thing. He first marketed the product in 1922, calling it Vegemite, but it took 14 years before his countrymen fell in love with it. Currently, 22 million jars of the pungent spread are sold each year. (This fact brought to you by the Fact or Crap calendar.)

Happy Birthday Wishes to Robin McLaurin Williams: Robin Williams has made many wonderful films throughout his career (Death to Smoochy, Dead Poets Society and Good Will Hunting). He has also made many bad ones (RV, Flubber, Popeye and Bicentennial Man). However, if you want the true Robin Williams, as is the case with most people who get their start in the stand up realm, rent his 2002 Live on Broadway DVD. Funny stuff! Want a free mini (4 oz) yogurt? (Limit one per person.) Name the TV show that he and his good friend Steve Martin get together and watch when they both have time.

An Ounce of Prevention

A few days ago, I noticed that my front right tire seemed to be a little low. Since I couldn't find my old tire gage I got a new one last night (a neat mini gauge with a magnet so if fits and holds inside the gas cap area). I checked the tires this morning and to my surprise the three of the four tires were low, but the back left tire was very low. It didn't even look that bad. I'm willing to bet that I get better gas mileage now that I have corrected that problem. So if you’re like me and you haven't checked your tire pressure in a while, I would recommend doing it because you never know when one of your tires is running on 40 percent of the required pressure. Click here for some tips.

The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Chocolate Mint, Pecan Praline, Very Berry and Peach. Today is Coke Floats for $2.99 (regularly $4.62).

We have received our shipment of Bagels, Pita and English Muffins. We have all varieties on hand (Perfect 10, Blueberry, Cinnamon, Onion, Sweet Wheat and White).

Also, we got in a new product this week: Large Gummy Fruit Slices. These are a little different than the small ones that we used to have, but they are very much like the old fashion fruit slices. Available in Orange, Lime, Cherry and Lemon flavors.

The winner of last week’s poll for a favorite vacation spot was the mountains. I promise that I didn't rig the results. This week we're asking What Is Your Favorite Cola? If you’re reading the blog, please take a moment and vote.

This week there will be no random link. Instead, I bring to you something from my personal mail box. I thought that this was pretty cool:

Shopping Time

I'm about to spend a good bit of money here over the next few weeks. In addition to moving to my new apartment and all of the fun expenses that go along with the move, I also have my car insurance renewal coming up at the beginning of August. Normally this would be somewhat of a laugh, but gone are the wonderful days of having the bare minimum in coverage for my old clunker Lumina. I almost choked when I saw the quote for the moderately new 2002 Corolla that I have. As much as I don't want to, it is time to partake in that painstaking adventure of shopping for insurance. Let the fun begin.

I'd say all of this is quite a pain in the neck, but I think that is actually from sleeping on it the wrong way. I'm looking forward to a little Friday night yoga action to take care of my neck and back.

Shave and a Haircut?

Not quite. Just the shave folks, so don't be surprised if you come in today and see me completely clean shaven which has been a rare occurrence over the last 10 years. In the mist of doing a deep clean in my room and bathroom, I got the sudden urge to go baby faced again. Perhaps it's since other things are changing as well. No telling the reason, but it seemed like a great idea at the time. Besides with the temperatures where they are, a shaved face is kind of nice. As for the haircut, maybe I'll get one in another few weeks. (Side note: I've got some mad skills when it comes to cleaning. The bathroom is spotless and cleaner than ever.)

The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Chocolate Malt, Pecan Praline, Strawberry Shortcake and Peach.

Yesterday SerenitySprings left a comment with a question about Rick's Tip of the Week. The answer lies in the unique properties of fiber. The use of fiber in your diet helps to "move" fats along your digestive track which aids in less absorption and it is filling so persons with high fiber diets tend to fell the urge to eat less. Two important tips for adding fiber to your diet are to add additional fiber as a slow rate to prevent the side effect of gas or diarrhea and to drink plenty of fluids (water) to prevent the opposite effect of constipation. If you want to read more about healthy eating and weight loss, I recommend the caloriesperhour.com web site. I hope that helps. If anyone ever has a question about the information presented on the blog, please leave a comment and I will be happy to answer.

Quiz Day: We haven't done one of these hard hitting quizzes in a while so today were going to have a flash back: Could You Pass 8th Grade Geography?

I Passed 8th Grade Geography

Congratulations, you got 8/10 correct!

I'm not really happy with that score, but it has been a few years since I’ve taking 8th grade geography. Good Luck. Don't forget to leave your score.

New Segment

I hope that everyone had a wonderful weekend despite the heat. I was able to be productive and get my room cleaned up and ready for my move at the end of the month. I sign my new lease on Saturday. It only took me two days to find my new apartment after I started looking. Sometimes it might seem that I move at a slow pace, but once I know which direction to go, I'm a quick and decisive about it. So now I have almost everything packed and ready to go. It will be nice to have a 10 minute drive into work instead of the 25 to 30 minute drive. Moreover, it will be great to be closer to my friends and the Addison/Dallas area.

The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Chocolate Malt, Pecan Praline, Strawberry Shortcake and Peach. (Lots of new flavors!)

There is a new segment for Mondays called the Owner's Corner. This is a chance for the owner, Rick Merlin, to speak with you and share some of his helpful hints for weight loss and life.

The Owner's Corner: My name is Rick Merlin, my wife Stacey and I own Sugarless deLite Inc. This year on August 1st, we will celebrate our 17th year of business. A lot has changed since we opened in 1989. Some of you have just recently found us and some of you have been our loyal customers for many years now. On behalf of the Merlin family and the employees of Sugarless deLite, thank you for your patronage.

This week marks the beginning of my weekly discussion with you. I will take this time to update you on how I use the products available at Sugarless deLite in my own life on the Weight Watchers program in an effort to help others be successful and to let you know about exciting news at Sugarless deLite.

Many of you have commented to me about personal struggles with weight loss. I have been following the Core program from Weight Watchers for the past year and have currently lost over 70 pounds. For those who have noticed the change, I appreciate the compliments. My daughter Stephanie has also been working the program with me and has lost 60 pounds. We understand the struggles that people have when working on a lifestyle/dietary change and we would like to help by offering a tip each week.

Tip of the Week: Over the past few months, I have fallen in love with our newest item for Weight Watchers called the Gnu Foods Flavor & Fiber bars. I greeted the bars with a measured skepticism. How could something called Flavor & Fiber actually taste good and would it even be worth spending two points to eat one of the bars? Of course, I was quickly won over by the taste. However, the real benefit of these bars lie not in the fantastic flavor of the Banana Walnut, Cinnamon Raisin or the Orange Cranberry bars, but the supreme benefit of the 12 grams of fiber. I have found that introducing one of these bars every three days a week into my diet has helped to move me from one of those frustrating plateaus that plagues everyone from time to time in a weight lose program. Variety is the spice of life.

Juke Boxes and Jackpots

If you put 5 dollars into the juke box at your local pub and you get your songs played, immediately go out and buy a lottery ticket because I'm pretty sure it takes a large amount of luck to accomplish this task. Last night my friends and I waited over 3 hours to hear any of our songs to no avail. The only fortunate part is that one of the persons in the front of the queue had good taste. (Towards the end of the evening our conclusion was that the wait staff was actually re-setting the box since I witnessed an event that seemed to confirm this. This should be illegal. I don't mind putting money in and not winning the juke box lottery, but I hate to think that I never had a chance.)

The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Peanut Butter, French Vanilla, Strawberry Shortcake and Pina Colada. Tonight is buy one yogurt, get one free (limit one, excludes XL) from 6PM to 8PM.

Your Saturday Distraction: What's Your Celtic Horoscope?

You Are A Chestnut Tree

You are a born diplomat with a well developed sense of justice.
And even though you're impressive and intimidating, you're also fun to be around.
You can be irritated easily, and you sometimes act superior.
Nevertheless, you are sensitive of others feelings and very loyal.
Sometimes you feel misunderstood and are fiercely close to those who know you best.

The funny thing about horoscopes is that they are almost always just true enough to seem reasonable. I look forward to seeing your results. (Let us know in the comments section.) I hope that every one has a great weekend.

100 Degrees and Counting

Sometimes I think that I should take the approach of the ostrich when it comes to weather in Texas during the summer months and just bury my head in the sand. There is something that is just so depressing about watching the weather and seeing 100 degrees plus run across the screen for seven straight days. Fortunately, I work in a nice cool store with excellent frozen yogurt that helps to cut the heat.

The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Peanut Butter, French Vanilla, Strawberry Shortcake and Pina Colada.

Today's special is a 50 % Off Sale on all items on the sale rack (located at the center of the store). Come in and get some super savings today only.

Fun Fact Friday: Tonya Harding was the first American ice skater to successfully land a triple axel in competition. In 1991, at the age of 21, Harding won her first National title, landing a triple axel in both her short and long programs, scoring perfect 6.0s for technical merit-a feat that has never been duplicated. But Harding's titles were stripped from her in 1994 after she pleaded guilty to hindering the investigation of an attack on Nancy Kerrigan, her skating rival. With Tonya's knowledge, her husband, Jeff Gillooly, and two others had "knee-capped" Kerrigan with a retractable baton. Whhyyyyy, Whhyyyyy, Whhyyy? (This fact brought to you by Fact or Crap calendar.)

Happy Birthday Wishes to Robin Mark Ventura. I don't like Robin Ventura, but I have to celebrate his birthday because he provided one of my greatest baseball memories. Mr. Ventura was the third baseman for the Chicago White Sox who decided to take exception to being hit by a curveball by a Texas Ranger pitcher in 1993. The pitcher was Nolan Ryan and the charge to the mound and the ensuing beat down placed on Ventura is the stuff of legend. So Mr. Ventura, thank you for not keeping your cool, charging the mound, getting put in a headlock and having seven successive punches landed on your face by a man almost twice your age, much of Texas enjoyed your folly. Want a free mini (4 oz) yogurt? (Limit one per person.) Name the last team for which Robin Ventura played.

Bad idea Robin.

The Slowest Day

Today is considered to be the slowest day of the year for sports fans. There is nothing going on today. However, here at Sugarless deLite we are not going to let that get us down. Here is a question that you may feel free to answer in the comments section: On a slow, lazy day, what do you most enjoy doing?

Myself? I like to sleep in until 11 or so, do some light cleaning around the house, watch a couple of hours of TV or read or play video games depending on my mood, go out for an hour or two running errands and cook a nice dinner. Even when I'm relaxing, I like to stay busy.

All Stars

The Major League Baseball All-Star game is tonight. This marks the traditional half way point in the baseball season and the time to revise any predictions made at the start first half. It just so happened that I was brave enough to blog my predictions back in April. On the 10th of April, these were my picks:

NL East: Braves
NL Central: Cardinals
NL West: Los Angeles
Wild Card: Mets

AL East: NY Yankees
AL Central: Cleveland
AL West: A's
Wildcard: White Sox

At the half way point, I do have a few revisions:

NL East: NY Mets
NL Central: Cardinals
NL West: Los Angeles
Wild Card: San Diego

AL East: NY Yankees
AL Central: White Sox
AL West: A's
Wildcard: Tigers

Of course the game, which doesn't and shouldn't count for anything (pay attention Bud), is being played at PNC Park home of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Is it merely a coincidence that the Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Dead Man's Chest came out this weekend (grossing over 134.5 million dollars in the 3 day stretch) or is it an official pirate holiday that I am as yet unaware.

The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Butterscotch, French Vanilla, Orange Vanilla and Pina Colada.

Quiz Day: If there is an official pirate holiday, I want to make sure that we celebrate it right here at Sugarless deLite. Today's quiz asks Which Princess Bride Character Are You? (I know this is a favorite movie for many of you out there. Thanks for the find Holly.)

BFF

Some mornings when you wake up, and it does seem to be Mondays more often than not, you feel like you're hung over not from drink but from a few to many stiff shots from life. Perhaps one of the reasons that Mondays get such a bad rap is that you know that you don't have another day or two to collect your thoughts and rest because somehow or another you just saw another weekend disappear. On the other hand, getting back into the grove of things at work can be a good thing as well. I bet that the French are having very similar thoughts this morning...except for that whole part about work being a good thing.

The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Butterscotch, French Vanilla, Orange Vanilla and Pina Colada.

Today's in-store special is 5 dollars UPS ground shipping to anywhere in the lower 48 states.

A very happy Italian fan.

Final World Cup Report: My predication came true as the Italian's defeated the French 1-1 (5-3 shootout). Unfortunatly, the game saw an ugly incident as the legendary French Midfielder Zinedine Zidane was issued a red card (a record 28th of the tournament) for a head butt in the 110 minute of play which will be the last play that the French Captain will ever make in international play as he is retiring. The Italians were outplayed for most of the game but managed to force the shootout and in very un-Italian fashion, score a perfect 5 goals. Congratulations to Italy, the 2006 World Cup winners.

Italy celebrates with the World Cup trophy.

I hope that you have enjoyed this window into this fine sporting event and that you may have be able to learn a little about the beautiful game. Thank you for letting me share with you my love and passion.

Bonus Post

The ever elusive Sunday post. There's not to much to say here except that I would encourage everyone to join the rest of the world and watch the World Cup final featuring Italy v France. If your riding the wave of pirate popularity and have cable, there is a special on the real pirates of the Caribbean tonight on the History channel at 7 PM.

The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Butterscotch, French Vanilla, Orange Vanilla and Pina Colada.

Hope that everyone enjoys the rest of their weekend.

She be OK

I did get to see the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest last night. I seem to be acquiring this bad little habit of going to sold out movies late and having to sit at the front left. Good thing that I was bendy from my yoga outing. I only got a very good view of the left side of the film so I may be a little biased.

The film itself is a fun ride. It is not a great film like the first, but a good film none the less. As I explained to my friends afterwards, the film suffers from the Halo 2 effect. It is the follow up to a very successful first film that people did not have great expectations for. Moreover, it is a film that is used as a bridge to the final installment of the series so it suffers from a bit of a let down ending. The action scenes are over the top as usual and the special effects are something special. The acting is good, but the story doesn't seem to allow them time to bring about greater character development. This is saying a lot since the film is 155 minutes long. I give this film a B with the first film getting an A+. I do feel that the final film will make this one seem better after the trilogy is complete.

The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, German Chocolate Cake, Cappuccino, Orange Vanilla and Pina Colada.

Here's a heads up about a change in the packaging of one of our products. The Galaxy Granola company is in the process of changing the bags on their products to reflect the correct calorie information. In the mean time, we have gotten the cinnamon variety in a different bag. The product and size is the same.

This weekend we have a double pie special for you with our Pecan Pies and our pies of the month (Blueberry and Peach) for $14.99 (regularly $19.99). Come in and get some get some pie.

Zinedine Zidane prepares for a corner kick.

World Cup Report: I called it. It is Italy v France for the final game on Sunday the 9th. Today, the game will see Germany v Portugal in the consolation round at 2:00 PM local. We get to see if German has any magic left in its tank. Zinedine Zidane of France will have a wonderful chance to leave his career as a two time World Cup champion. The Italians will see if they can shake off the scandals rocking the Italian soccer federation to win a 4 overall world cup. Experience sides with France, I go with Italy.

The funny thing about soccer is that the players can be carted off the pitch on a stretcher and yet return to play later in the same game. You don’t see that in American Football.

As a final side note, does anyone know what happened on Central last night around 12:30 or 1:00 AM? On my way home from the movie, the northbound and possibly southbound side was shut down at the George Bush Turnpike. This took my 30 minute trip home and turned it into an hour long drive.

I hope that everyone has a wonderful weekend. Next week the Saturday distractions will return to the blog as the World Cup will be over. :(

Arrrrr, there be a movie on the horizon.

The summer movie season is in full effect now with the back to back releases of Superman Returns and this week’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. If I'm not mistaken, I believe that we may have a few pirate fans out there in our mist. I've seen some mixed reviews on the second installment of this theme park amusement ride movie. I may have a personal review for everyone tomorrow.

The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, German Chocolate Cake, Cappuccino, Orange Vanilla and Raspberry Cheesecake.

The bagels, pita and English Muffins are now in stock. We have all varieties available in the store.

This weekend we have a double pie special for you with our Pecan Pies and our pies of the month (Blueberry and Peach) for $14.99 (regularly $19.99). Come in and get some get some pie.

Fun Fact Friday: (The pirate theme continues.) As a warning to would-be pirates, Captain William Kidd's corpse was tarred and hung over the Thames River for several years. In 1701, the British Admiralty found Captain Kidd guilty of murder and piracy. As was the custom at executions, spectators offered Kidd rum until he was blind drunk. Kidd was hanged, but his weight snapped the rope. He was promptly sent up to the gallows again and hanged for a second time. After he expired, his body was dipped in tar, then placed in a steel cage and suspended over the Thames, where it remained for several years.

On the Hunt

I'm looking for an apartment again. In what seems to be a time honored yearly tradition, I am looking for my new domicile. You would think that with modern technology the process would be easier but they have certainly not perfected that side of the industry. Where ever I end up, I know that it will be slightly closer than my drive from Allen which means that my little Corolla should only need to be filled up twice a month. I'll have this one nailed down by next week.

The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, German Chocolate Cake, Cappuccino, Orange Vanilla and Raspberry Cheesecake. Today is Coke Float Day with or floats only $2.99 (regularly $4.69).

Remember, because of the July 4th holiday, the bagels will be delivered tomorrow. We do have all of the bagels except for the Perfect 10 available in the freezer.

We have received our shipment in from FiordiFrutta and are re-stocked on the Cranberry, Peach, Plum, Strawberry and Wild Blueberry fruit spreads.

Last week's poll backs up its more scientific brethren with most people choosing the temperate range of 70-79 degrees. This week’s poll is a hail to our science fiction fans out there: Do You Love Doctor Who?

I know that there are a few of you out there who may be fans. Not only was series one of the new installment of Doctor Who released this week in stores, but they have also just announced the replacement for Billie Piper's character Rose. In season three, Ms. Piper will be replaced by Freema Agyeman's new character Martha Jones. So, here is a little link for fans of the Doctor. It is not quite a ride on the Tardis, but it is as good as I could find.

Kaboom!

It seems that rainy weather, burn bans, and city restrictions weren't enough to stop everyone from celebrating our nation's 230th birthday yesterday with the time honored fireworks tradition. I heard fireworks going off past twelve in the North Dallas area. Speaking of rain, how cool was it to actually get some sustainable precipitation? I know it wasn't the best day for it, but it is good to actually have gotten some measurable amount. We may even be in for a little bit later in the week. :)

The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, German Chocolate Cake, Cappuccino, Raspberry Cheesecake and Banana. Today is $1.79 cone day (regularly $2.72).

I'm pretty sure that I forgot to mention last week that we got a new type of brittle. We now have a sugar free sunflower seed brittle. It may sound odd, but it tastes great!

Wacky Photo Wednesday:

Superman in his early years.

World Cup Report: The host team Germany went down in defeat yesterday at the hands of team Italy. The 2-0 final makes it seem like the Italians dominated, but the match didn’t see it first score until extended play in the 119th minute. The second came one minute later. This was a crushing defeat for a German team that really wasn’t supposed to even be this far into the tournament.

The second goal in the 120th minutes finishes Germany's 2006 World Cup run.

Later today, Portugal will match up against France. The loser of this game will match against Germany on Saturday the 8th and the winner will match against Italy on Sunday the 9th to play for the 2006 World Cup. I predict an Italy v France final with an Italy win.

Some notes from the sideline: Mexico has chosen not to renew the contract of their national team’s coach, Ricardo Lavolpe, because as president Alberto de la Torre of the Mexican Football Federation says, Lavolpe “had failed to provide ‘that fifth World Cup match’ that he had promised.” FIFA is considering using two referees in future World Cup matches to avoid some of the outrageous calls that we have seen this year. The French cabinet put aside the business of running the country yesterday to discuss the match against Portugal for a bit. It is official; England is ashamed of its lame performance in the 2006 World Cup. As center-back Rio Ferdinand says, "It's embarrassing if I'm being honest. I was a bit embarrassed to set foot outside the door when I went shopping with my girlfriend Rebecca."

We Are Open!

Just one more reminder, we are open today, the 4th of July, from 12 PM to 6 PM. We have all of our shakes on special today for $2.99. Of course, we also have our Peach and Blueberry pies on special for $14.99 (regularly $19.99). If you are looking for a last minute dessert we have cakes and pies available. Also, we have a one day $9.99 special on our crème pies (regularly $19.99).

The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, German Chocolate Cake, Cappuccino, Raspberry Cheesecake and Banana.

Quiz Day: In keeping with the theme of patriotism, today's quiz asks How American Are You?

You Are 68% American

Most times I am proud to be an American.
Though sometimes the good ole US of A makes me cringe
Still, I know there's no place better suited to be my home.
I love my freedom and no one's going to take it away from me!

I hope that everyone has a wonderful and safe 4th of July! If you get a chance, come by and see us.

Half Way Point

For those of you not keeping count, the year is now officially half way over. Once again Father Time has worked his magic and whisked us thru the first half of 2006. Less than six months to the Christmas shopping season. :( That's really not that much time...I better start getting some of my shopping done.

Speaking of shopping, if you like cokes or canned beverages then make sure you stop by your local grocery store today or tomorrow to get some great specials. A good number of stores including Kroger and Albertsons have specials on certain brands that allow you to get five 12 packs for 10 dollars. That's 18 cents per can after taxes! Of course, I would not encourage people to drink cokes left and right, but these specials also include the diet and non-caffeinated varieties. It beats 4.79 for a 12 pack.

The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Devil's Food Cake, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Raspberry Cheesecake and Banana.

Today's in-store special is 5 dollar UPS ground shipping to anywhere in the lower 48 states. UPS will have the day off tomorrow, but we can still get your mail orders out today. (The bagels will be in on Friday this week because of the July 4th holiday.)

We will be open tomorrow to serve you from 12 PM to 6 PM.

We have just received our shipment of Gnu foods Flavor and Fiber bars. We are now restocked on the Banana Walnut bars. These things do move quickly. Remember, we now have a case price of $34.99 (mix and match), a 12% savings, for those of you who know how good these are.

To prepare you for the 4th of July holiday, here is an article from the USA Today about what it means to be an American. Sometimes in all of the negative news that is out there, it is nice to find a few positive stories.

Speaking of positive stories, I will once again say that Superman Returns is a worthwhile film to see this Fourth of July weekend. If you can, go see it on the IMAX screen or your biggest screen at your local movie theater. This is a great movie for the larger screens.

July Specials

You can tell that the July 4th weekend is in effect. Driving into work today was a breeze. The pace seems a little slower outside the store. That and the fact that we have a fair number of cakes ordered with red, white and blue writing on them. Just to let everyone know, we will be open regular hours this week except for the 4th of July when we will be open from 12 PM to 6 PM.

The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Devil's Food Cake, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Banana and Raspberry Cheesecake.

Our Pie Specials this month are the Peach and the Blueberry Fruit Pies which are available all month for $14.99 (regularly $19.99). We have a full assortment of bakery items that are available this weekend.

A note for our customers on our email list, I am still having some issues with Outlook Express. I hope to have the emails to you by the 5th or 6th of July. Thank you for your patience.

The July Calendar:

World Cup Report: This is why the World Cup is known as the greatest sporting competition in the world. The quarterfinals have provided us with two wonderful games. Yesterday, the host team Germany defeated the Argentina team 1-1 (4-2 in the shootout) in a beautiful match that ended with a fight on the field at the conclusion of the shootout. The Italians rolled over the Ukraine team with a 3-0 win. This sets up the Germany v Italy match for July 4th.

Equalizing Goal scored by Germany’s Miroslav Klose against Argentina back-up goalie Leonardo Franco.

Today, England and Portugal are locked up 0-0 after regulation and have just finished extended play. We may will the second shootout in the quarterfinals just a few minutes after this posting. Later today we will see the second greatest match of the tournament with Brazil matching up against France. The winner of the two matches today will see each other on July 5th.

The President of FIFA, Sepp Blatter, with the 2006 World Cup Mascot Goleo and his ball Pille.

Is it just me or is Goleo’s ball Pille really, really creepy looking? Hope everyone has a wonderful extended weekend.
