Yesterday, while listening to NPR, I heard a program about credit cards and the companies that issue them. Sufficient to say, it was not very flattering. These companies do a number of shady things that try to take advantage of their customers and have them accrue additional debts. Moving due dates, changing interest rates without cause, intentionally losing payments and universal defaults are just a few of these practices. If you are going to play the credit game, then caveat emptor.

Fortunately, there is a way to play the game and avoid all of the fees: pay the card off each month. Of course, you still have to watch them like a hawk so that they don't move your due by date on you like two of my cards did this year, but you can avoid all of the charges that you would otherwise rack up in interest over the year. The term within the credit business for this kind of customer is a Deadbeat. It is a name that I am most happy to have.

There are of course two other options which will help even more. Save up for what you want to buy by putting aside money each month. Then pay for items with cash, checks or a debit card so it comes directly out of your account. Many debit cards can be used just like a credit card for setting up automatic payments and often have similar reward programs. (Naturally, these programs are set up to get you to use your credit card more frequently and thus obtain more debt; however, with the debit card, you will not add to debt since it will come out of the money in your bank account.) While these two options might seem outdated, it worked wonders for our parents and all of the generations before them.
