One of the tricky things about the environment is that, to be honest, we don't really know what we're doing. Sometimes, it is easy to see short term beneifits that are appealing, but we miss the long term problems that these solutions might create. A new study suggests the corn-based ethanol, which is touted at our savior from oil dependency, might be more harmful in the long run because of the release of carbon dioxide that results from deforestation and the energy used to grow and refine the ethanol.

I have long felt that the corn-based solution is not a solution at all, but this study also brings the switchgrass-based ethanol into question. One thing is certain, we don't yet have the answers. A true alternative initiative would be a nice start. In the meantime, we'll have to try and do our part with the little things.
