I went home yesterday and was greeted with the news that Heath Ledger had died. It was a bit of a shock to know that one of the great and challenging actors of Generation X was gone. I'm a little bit calloused to these news stories. While I feel it is a tragedy, it is something that I have become sadly accustomed to over the years. I think that, after I came home on April 5, 1994 only to find out that Kurt Cobain was dead, I've been slightly detached from celebrity deaths.

Maybe part of our problem is that we stop seeing celebrities as people. Somewhere along the line because of a death or a misstep, we just begin to expect to be entertained by their lives. I think that we use their lives instead of their products to escape. We forget that they are there to entertain us on the stage or the screen or in the studio rather than the police blotter or TMZ or any of the countless magazines that chronicle their every move. Nevertheless, they are no different than you or me. So, I do feel for his family and loved ones. I feel for the fans that are experiencing the first death of a celebrity that they care about. I also feel for those who are jaded like myself, because we've lost something too.
