The 1957 Dallas tornado marked the first major quantitative success for modern scientific research into one of nature's most incredible phenomena, research that has saved an untold number of lives and that continues today with highly mobile Doppler radar and other sophisticated weather instrumentation which can be moved quickly to sites of severe storms. one scientist called "the best-documented tornado in history." NBC Cameraman Maurice ("Moe") Levy, 34, grabbed his 16-mm. hand camera, hopped into his car and headed straight for the distant black column. He met it stopped his car every few feet (leaving the motor running) to get pictures, never let it get more than 200 yds. away.
