The Last Two Days of 2006

You can look at this as a late entry for December 30th or a premature blog for December 31st. Actually, I am just trying to impress my manager as to how HARD and how LATE I am working in his absence. I trust he will be suitably impressed. This will be my last regular blog, at least for 2006. A reminder that our hours tomorrow for Sunday, December 31st: NOON to 4 PM. As you can surmise, all the Sugarless deLite Staffers have big part hardy plans to ring in 2007. To allow everyone the chance to recuperate and get their bearings, we will be closed January 1, 2007. A word of caution to our customers. We want everyone to have a great time New Years Eve and New Years Day. PLEASE heed the following: If your drink- DON'T DRIVE If you drive - DON"T DRINK From the staff of Sugarless deLite: we wish everyone a healthy, happy, prosperous, and peaceful 2007. Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Pistachio, Pumpkin, Egg Nog and Candy Cane.

Gunsmoke Turns 80

Yes indeed, my father nicknamed "Gunsmoke" by all of the Sugarless deLite staff is 80 years old today. His nickname comes from the fact that he was a deputy with the sheriff's department for 25 years followed by another 15 years with the Dallas Police Department until retired. He also served in WWII in the U.S. Navy as a gunner on a destroyer. Happy Birthday Dad. FYI, he is also my Aunt Syd's nephew. I guess it is time to start thinking about those New Year's resolutions. I think I will pass. I consider getting up every morning, coming to work, and getting home without being run over by other drivers a major accomplishment most days. Many of our staff have acquired Wiis for Christmas and have vowed to take advantage of their newest purchases. There is talk that they are trying to develop a software program that tests the ability to pull the perfect frozen yogurt sample. I personally, would rather have a dog which I already have. However, I would not mind h

Happy Birthday Aunt Syd

Today in 1904, the first weather reports were published. Keeping with the atmosphere and space, Thomas Henderson-astronomer was born in 1795. It is also my Aunt Syd's birthday today and she is 97. She acts like she is 25, has a wit sharper than a swiss army knife and the heart the size of Alaska. Happy Birthday to my favorite Aunt in the universe. On a more religious note, today is Innocent's Day commemorating the massacre of children in Bethlehem by King Herod. On to a brighter outlook, the sun is struggling to show its face and I am optimistic with its success. If you are feeling a bit down after the Christmas cheer, think about adopting a furry face at your local animal shelter. Pets are always glad to see you when you come home and they truly are humankind's best friends. There are two caveats to this suggestion. 1] only get a pet if you are willing to treat them as well as they treat you, and 2] in the famous words of Bob Barker- don't forget to spay or neu

Another Day in Paradise

Wednesday, December 27, 2006 Good Morning from Sugarless deLite. As you can probably tell, the usual blogger is on vacation enjoying a good chili dog at "The Varsity" in Atlanta. Atlanta is famous for several things 1] having several streets named Peachtree- which can drive a sane person nuts; 2] Coca Cola- it's the the real thing; 3] The Atlanta Braves - the sacred love of one of us owners (the other one is fond of the NY Mets), and 4] the Varsity. FYI, The Varsity is an historical institution and the largest drive-in restaurant in the country. It is famous for their chili dogs, frosted oranges, great onion rings and fries. Not exactly low cal, low fat, or sugar free fare. It is also where Nipsy Russell (The Match Game and other game shows of the 70s) worked. Georgia is quite beautiful with its pine trees, rich civil war history even if they did lose, and beautiful architecture. I have a special fondness for Georgia that goes beyond it being my spouse's home state. So

Special Shopping Day

Three busy days are ahead of us here at the store. I hope that you have most of your shopping done or if you don't that you remember to have fun while doing it. There are a lot of people who like to make us one of their last stops. To accommodate them, we have baked extra cake loaves and pies and have plenty of chocolate assortments available. Don't forget to check out the holiday hours on the door when you come in to the store. I'll post these for you on Sunday. Fun Is on the Way

There is not much time left. There is only four more days until left until vacation...I mean Christmas. This is the time of year that I take my big vacation. I didn't really take time off this year so I'm heading out for an extended vacation this year spending time with my family in Atlanta, Georgia and Lumberton, North Carolina . I'll admit that North Carolina is one of the favorite states. The coolest thing about it is that you can start driving at one end of it in the Appalachian Mountains and 4 1/2 hours later end up on the other side approaching the east coast beach. All the way through the drive, you can see pine trees all the way. It's a beautiful state. I look forward to sharing it this holiday season. Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Marshmallow, Pumpkin, Egg Nog and Angel Food Cake. Today is Cone Day! All cones are $1.85 all day long (regularly $2.72). 5 To Go

Image
Earlier this month I set up a to-do list. I've had an amazing amount of success on accomplishing the tasks that I set for myself. There are really only a few left to go. (Granted, some of them are the big ones.) It's been really helpful to have the list to go from along with the deadlines. Not everything has been done right on time, but it has been close. This has been so successful that I may have to carry this over to the New Year. Speaking of things to do, there are only a few days left to accomplish your Christmas shopping. The rain seems to have stopped for today so you might be able to get some errands run without getting wet. If you’re shopping today, then you are still probably early enough to have a decent selection. Good Luck! Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Marshmallow, Pumpkin, Egg Nog and Angel Food Cake.

One of the hardest things during the Christmas season for me is having to wait to give my presents out (yes, receive as well). I shop early and usually have had most of my presents for over a month or two (yes, sometimes even a year). Every once in a while, I have a really special present that I desperately want to give because I know how much it will mean to the one who receives it. I actively have to tell myself to be patient and this can be hard at times because I am so excited. Nevertheless, I know that the present always mean more when given on that special day. Therefore, I will patiently wait. :) Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, German Chocolate Cake, Peanut Butter, Banana Macadamia Nut and Angel Food Cake. Today is Shake Day! Seven Day Itch

This was a great weekend all things considered. It was nice to enjoy a few White Elephant parties and I was able to hand out a few true Christmas presents. My girlfriend and I went to the Bass Performance Hall on Saturday evening to see the Texas Ballet performance of the Nutcracker. It was the first time that I had been to Bass and it is a wonderful hall. We both had a lot of fun getting dressed up and going out on the town. After three months of searching, we also found and joined our new church home at Parkway Hills . This was like the cherry on the top for the weekend. It's nice knowing where your home is. Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, German Chocolate Cake, Peanut Butter, Banana Macadamia Nut and Angel Food Cake. Today all UT Dallas students get a free small yogurt with their student ID. Reminder: You've got seven days left to get your Christmas shopping finished. Don't put it off any longer. Also, don't forget to order your holiday pie

Round two of the White Elephant parties was not nearly as successful as round one for me in regards to the gift that I received. However, it was more than rewarding for the gift that was given. I put a little bit of thought into gifts. I love to give them. My general rule for a White Elephant gift is to buy one with someone in particular in mind and leave it to chance or their own craftiness to see if they can end up with it. The other option is to give a gift that everyone will enjoy and fight over. I was glad to see that the chosen recipient ended up with her gift. She also received a legacy re-gift and the responsibility that comes along with it. Assuming that she does her job well, the legacy re-gift will live to see its 10th year at the next Vortex White Elephant party. Thanks to Dave and Holly for hosting. The Elephant in the Room

I went to a White Elephant party last night with my girlfriend. She was the second picker and got the worst gift, which may be re-gifted at tonight's White Elephant party. Here are a few hints to anyone who may have one of these parties to go to: 1. If you like something that is already opened, always steal it. 2. Keep careful tabs on possessions so that you can steal an item to lock it down. 3. Be very weary of picking out anything from the pile. 4. When picking things out from the pile, pick out the middle of the road packaging. (Too cute or too ugly can be bad things.) 5. Remember to have fun and never bring a box of trash! As I was watching Sports Center last night after dinner, I heard that Lamar Hunt died from complications related to prostate cancer. For those of you not familiar with Mr. Hunt, he is one of the legends of American sports. He was one of the founders of the AFL and one of the main reasons that the NFL and AFL merged. He owned the Kansas City Chiefs. He was also one of the founders of the MLS and owner of both the FC Dallas team and the Columbus Crew. As if that wasn't enough, he was a pioneer in the world of tennis as a co-founder of the World Tennis Circuit. Among his many honors that he received in his life, Mr. Hunt was named Man of the Year by the Kappa Sigma Fraternity in 1973. He is a brother from the Epsilon-Gamma of Louisiana Tech University. So I wanted to take this opportunity to thank Brother Hunt for all he has done for the world of sport and for all of his humanitarian contributions over the years. You will be missed. Not to say that it was any fun, but the doctor appointment went well. I got a really cool red crayon band-aid. My girlfriend was very kind and cooked dinner for me which was wonderful because I had to fast throughout the day for the physical. I think that meatloaf might just be a perfect breakfast food for 6:30 at night. Over the last year, I've come to realize more and more that when you face up to your fears, i.e. doctors, and follow through with the course of action, you often feel pretty good about the results. It's a lot like exercising in that regard. It is rarely ever fun, but the results are nice to have. Let's Get Physical

There are very few things that I really don't like to do. On that list, I would definitely place going to the doctor, any type of doctor, very high. Today I am going to get my fist physical in 12 years. (Some might say that I am over due.) I know that everything is fine, but the male in me just recoils at the thought of going. The more I talk to other men, the more I know that this is a guy thing to some degree. Men just don't like doctors. Last night my girlfriend and I along with her roommate and her boyfriend went to the night of 1,000 voices concert at Prestonwood . The music was great. Toward the end of the performance, the children's choir and the Jr. High and High School choirs joined the 800 plus adults on stage and sang the final 3 songs with them. It was pretty amazing to hear. Excellent job to all of those who sang and to the orchestra. Thank you for a wonderful evening. After the concert we went to IHOP for dinner. I got home from work last night tired and hungry around 7 o'clock. I was going to dinner at 8:45 PM so I had a little bit of time. I haven't been working out over the last two weeks because of a sore back, general tiredness, busy schedule, late nights and a myriad of other excuses. It dawned on me last night as I was preparing to sit down in the recliner once again and talk myself out of another workout that the extreme since of tiredness was a reason to work out rather than an excuse to avoid it. Once I had on the workout clothes (note to self: get sweat pants), I felt committed and it was easier to get motivated. Because of the time constraints, I only went through 2 of the 3 sets and ran a short 3/4 mile. However, it sure did feel good to get back into some type of routine. As I was walking home, I realized how much the work out had become important to me. It gives me a chance to burn off extra energy and have some time to think through things. I just found out this morning that I have sold my Limited Edition Halo Xbox that I listed on Half.com. While I am very happy to have this item sold, it will be a little sad to pack it up and ship it across the nation. After all, I have had an Xbox since 2002 and have spent hours playing the various games that I own. Additionally, the system has doubled as my juke box over that time period and the new owner is about to inherent almost every Radiohead song ever made a long with about 20 other artists. Of course, it was time to move on to the next stage. While I don't think that I will ever grow out of playing games, I have grown out of the doing little but playing games stage. Life has too much to offer to remain tethered to a box and a TV. (To be fair, I still have three other consoles.) The best part of selling the Xbox is that it solves the chicken or the egg dilemma. Now, I can proceed with listing all of the Xbox games that have. The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Cl

Did you ever get a present all wrapped up for you to open that you just knew was the one that you had been asking for over the last few months only to open it and find out that it was a cleverly disguised box of T-shirts? This is what happened today at the store when I opened the box from Chocolite. I was so excited to get this long awaited shipment since we have been waiting over 4 months. Alas, my hopes were dashed as soon as the box was opened to reveal one full case of the only flavor that we actually have in stock instead of the Crispy Caramel that we have been waiting on and were promised. It seems that yesterday was a bit of a bust after all. All that talk about a huge winter storm amounted to not much more that a little sleet and some wonderful snow. It was fun getting to dance outside for a few minutes as the big snowflakes come down in the 4 o'clock hour. I hope that everyone got to enjoy the slightly white landscape on the drive home as it will all be gone in the next few hours. My girlfriend, who is a saint, was kind enough to brave the cold with me, go to dinner and run a few errands. We ate at Go Fish in Addison which is an excellent restaurant for seafood. It seems that everyone was looking for a reason to go home early last night. (Yes, Sugarless deLite closed at 7.) We heard the good people at Barnes & Noble say that they were shutting down at 9 o'clock. It just seemed like a day that people wanted to either stay in or get home quickly. When I left work last night, it was like a nice spring day. When I got out of my car 7 minutes later at Kroger, the cold front had started to blow into town. Over the next few hours, the weather completely changed. I awoke to a nice cool apartment after sleeping the sound sleep that the cold always brings. As for that snow day, I don't think that anyone is going to get one. The weather looks like it might cause a few problems today during the mid-day hours and possibly during the morning commute tomorrow; however, the temperature tomorrow is supposed to be in the upper forties. You wouldn't know it by the temperature this morning but, in 12 hours time, we will have our first real cold weather of the year. I've heard a lot of talk about the weather and what it will do over the evening and tomorrow during the day. The cold front is going to start blowing in later this afternoon just in time for the drive home from work; however, the rain won't start until early tomorrow morning. The weather report is showing rain and mixed precipitation during the afternoon hours tomorrow. With past few days of warmth, we should not experience many problems on the road as a result unless people go crazy and forget how to drive or if they take the advice of some of the answers to yesterday's quiz. If you were hoping for a snow day, you may have to wait till the next round. Nevertheless, this is Texas and the weather can change at any moment. I think that I was actually hot on the way into work today. The humidity and the temperature created a situation where the vent was just not quiet enough. That is OK because tomorrow evening we get some of the weather that I love. Today, he told me that there is a new type of TV that is coming out next year that uses lasers to create the projection. These reportedly use less power and have a much more vivid display. My girlfriend and I visited Prestonwood Church a few weeks ago and they had shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child which is similar to the Angel trees that are often found at malls this time of year. We each picked up a box for one boy and girl. On Thursday we did our shopping and last night I packed them which was no easy task. One of my favorite types of challenge is one that deals with spatial relations. Packing puzzles and things of the like can be frustrating at times, but they are entertaining and the reward is worthwhile. When Smoke Gets in Your Eyes

Last night was the first evening when it seemed like a great idea to start a fire. I've never had a fireplace that I have used at any of my other apartments and thought that it was high time to use it. Here are a couple of fire safety tips for the cold winter months: 1. Make sure the flume is open. If you have a question about this, you can light a small piece of paper, hold it under the flume and see if the smoke rises straight up. 2. Use a clean burning fire log instead of wood. There are now have several environmentally friendly options that burn for several hours and create much less smoke and particulate matter. 3. When using a clean burning log, follow the directions and do not add additional fuel to the fire. In particular, paper is bad and may lead to a very smoky apartment which can in turn set off a fire detector thus necessitating one to open all of the windows and the patio door to alleviate the smoke but, in the process, cooling off the entire apartment to 57 degrees a

Hello Moto!

My Motorola L2 arrived yesterday. I like this phone a lot more than the Sony Ericsson w300i. It will take a little bit of time to figure out how everything works on it because I am so used to Nokia phones. I might even cheat and read the manual. Nevertheless, it is nice to have a simple phone back in my hands that I don't feel like I'm going to break or accidentally trigger a camera, internet or iTune explosion. Yes, I am old fashioned. I still like a phone that is a phone. I am happier now that I have one. (It is really nice and shinny too.) The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Peanut Butter, Roasted Almond, Very Berry and German Chocolate Cake. It is the home stretch for ordering your holiday pies. Season of Change

Image
I stayed up late last night reading a couple of books so that I could move on to the next chapter. It is nice knowing that something is almost finished and that a new challenge awaits, but the key is to see it through to the end. I used to be really bad at this. I would often be in the middle of 5 or 6 books because I would get half way or 2/3 of the way through one and start another. Thankfully, I no longer operate this way. Full steam ahead! I was actually awake when the winds of change came around last night. A mighty wind it was. This morning I awoke to no power and rain. Two surprises that made it slightly more tricky to get ready for work today. But, the water was working and I have candles at home so overall, it wasn't very inconvenient...just a little weird. Breakthrough?

After spending the first hour of the morning on the phone with Cingular, I think that I may have resolved my phone issue. I have a new candy bar style phone on the way with no camera or music feature. This will be a nice change from the flip phone that I currently have. I understand that the flip phones are all the rage, but I am like an old man...I know what I like and I don't need to change it. I tried and it didn't work. Assuming that all of the information that I was told today was correct which is a dangerous thing, then I should not be charged anything other than shipping for this phone. It will be nice to have this all settled. I will give a very hesitant, but hopeful yay and a thank you to Mary Jean at Cingular. :/ Of course, that is how Mondays start sometimes, but if you persevere, it is almost always worthwhile. The weekend was short but refreshing. My girlfriend and I tried a new salmon recipe that was really good and pretty easy to make. I love getting to cook and

It sure was nice to have the cold front move through last night. I opened up the windows and let the cool air sweep through the apartment. By bedtime, I had managed to take the temperature from 75 to 68 degrees which is a much better for sleeping. Tonight is supposed to be a little on the chilly side at 36 degrees. I might actually be able to have a fire tonight. :) The store is looking more and more like Christmas every day. The merchandise is around 70% made (we do all the boxes and tins here at the store), the decorations are going up this weekend and the music will start going in next weekend. I had to turn my A/C on last night. It was a little depressing. But, with the oven going, the internal temperature at 81 plus and no breeze coming from the outside, it seemed a good idea. The A/C was still turning on when I went to bed at 1 AM to keep the apartment at a nice and cool 78. It's almost the middle of November? There is something about watching a train wreck that makes it so hard to turn away. It doesn’t help that my degree from UT Dallas is a Political Science degree. Last night was kind of like the Rose Bowl for poly sci people. If you’re a fan, you have to watch it. After watching around 5 straight hours of the watching the results roll in, I turned off the TV at 1 AM when I knew that the final two states (Virginia and Montana) would probably not be decided until a month of litigation and a recount. Somehow I don’t think that this is what the Founding Fathers had in mind. Welcome to democracy in the 21st century. I hope that everyone got a chance to vote. If you didn't get a sticker, you are not the only one. My polling station also did not give the traditional I Voted sticker. I was a little bummed about this, but I think that my shirt yesterday let people know that I had participated in our democratic system. (I can't believe that they let me wear it into the polling station.) Th

I think that some of the best sleep that you can have is when there is a little rain in the background. (The real stuff, not the electric alarm clock variety.) Past, Present, Future

Nostalgia can be fun. I put the album Bleed American by Jimmy Eat World into the CD player this morning. It's kind of fun to listen to it and remember back when it came out a few years back. It really is a good album and it was one that I listened to a lot. It can be fun to look back. For that matter, it can be fun to look forward. The most fun, however, is being happy with where you are in the present. The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Pumpkin, Marshmallow, New York Cheesecake and Banana. I'm Loving It!

The fact that I might have to add another heavy blanket to my bed makes me smile. I love this cold weather. The fact that it was 62 in my apartment this morning made it harder to get out of bed; however, once I got up, I loved it. Trepanning-surgically making a circular opening in the skull-began in the Neolithic era, evidently for health and spiritual reasons. Evidence of the practice has been found in Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americans. Some believed the purpose was to release "ill humors." Today, there is a new movemen

Back to Work

After a nine day layoff due to family, pseudo-illness (allergies) and laziness, I got back into the gym last night. (OK, laziness was the biggest component.) As I was watching the news seeing everything that is wrong with the world because all the good things never seem to get any coverage, I realized that I was putting off my work out again. The proverbial devil popped up on my left shoulder and told me that it was too late (11 PM), but the proverbial angel also appeared and told me that I was being a lazy bum. Earlier in the year, I would have listened to the devil. The funny thing about it is that the more you listen to the angel the less pull the devil has and the more you can discern the truth from the falsehoods. You begin to recognize that your body's real message is not "You're too tired to exercise." Rather, you know that it is saying, "You're so tired because you’re not exercising." Behold, the truth was the latter. After an hour work out with

Pie Month Begins

I did a bit of mall shopping yesterday since I don’t really have a pair of jeans that fit anymore. (I blame working out. I knew that there had to be a downside to it.) Apparently, kids trick-or-treat at the mall and expect innocent shoppers to have candy for them. Tough luck kids, you picked the wrong shopper. I didn’t even know that the group of children were asking me for candy until the mother hen said, “Well, do you have candy for them or not?” Note to self: Avoid the malls on Halloween. Of course the end of Halloween means the start of the Christmas holiday season. Over the next few days you will begin to see the halls decked out at all of your favorite retail stores. Ours is no exception. During the first few weeks of November, you will have the opportunity to get some good savings on your holiday shopping needs if you are an early shopper. This is a quick reminder to start the blog: Election Day is one week away. Next Tuesday is your chance to vote for your local, state and federal leadership. If you are uncertain of the candidates and their stances, here is a link to the League of Women Voters of Texas Voters Guide for the 2006 election. Also, here is a link to Project Vote Smart . Today is Halloween. Here in north Texas, it means that there is a cold front due this evening. It seems like we get one every time during the evening of Halloween. If you’re taking the kids out this evening, be sure that they are bundled up from head to toe. There is going to be quite a wind today as the cold front moves through. All Dressed Up

This weekend, my friends held their annual Halloween party. A lot of them go all out for this event and it is one of the most anticipated parties of the year. In my opinion, the top costumes of the evening go to Space Ghost, the 50's Pin Up, Michael Jackson (for the attitude), and the Mooninites (a husband and wife team). An honorable mention goes to Spinach: the scariest substance on earth. It was a fun night as always. The Yogurt Flavors: Chocolate Decadence, World Class Vanilla, Chocolate Peach (one time special event), Caramel Fudge, Blueberry Cheesecake and Peach. The top two questions lately are related to Trans fat and whole grains. Each of these topics is a valid concern

World Series Champions-St. Louis

Image
I've waited 24 years to say that the St. Louis Cardinals are the champions again. The last time my Cardinals won, I was 4 years old just starting to understand the world around me. I grew up during most of my elementary years in St. Louis. It's a baseball town where you do root for the home team. I've even had the pleasure of attending a World Series game there, but they lost that series to the Royals. It is true what they say though, good things do come to those who wait. The Cardinals (10) now rank second behind the NY Yankees (26) for total victories in the World Series. Congratulations to the team that very few people gave a chance to advance out of the first or second round and that very few people even thought could last 6 games against the Tigers. I'd also like to tip my hat to the Detroit Tigers for an excellent and exciting season. With the young squad that Detroit has, they could be back on the grand stage a few more times over the next 5 years. The only down

No Contest

I woke up early this morning to go pay a ticket from the good city of Parker. The store opens at 10 AM so I normally don't wake up until 8:35 AM. I have not been able to adjust my normal 1 AM bed time and twice this week I have found myself awake at 7:25 AM. It makes my days a little more yawny than usual, but I've been able to take care of some important errands. I was amazed at the change in weather from yesterday to today. No wonder people get sick. One day it's 85 and the next it is 55 with a cold wind. It is just another day in Texas. I'm sure tomorrow's weather will change again.
